The customer is Mitsubishi Motors. A March 21, 2025 report said Foxconn would manufacture electric vehicles for the Japanese automaker in Taiwan, with initial vehicles intended for Australia and New Zealand. The arrangement could give Foxconn a more established reference customer for its contract-vehicle business, but public details do not establish the model, production start, volume, or even the precise manufacturing scope. It is a significant reported customer win—not proof that Foxconn has already built a scaled, profitable car business.
What was reported about the Mitsubishi Motors arrangement?
Transport Topics reported on March 21, 2025, that Mitsubishi Motors Corp. would be Foxconn’s first major electric-vehicle contract-manufacturing customer. The report described vehicles to be made in Taiwan for intended export to Australia and New Zealand. It cited a person familiar with the matter; Mitsubishi Motors reportedly said it was open to collaboration, while Foxconn representatives declined to comment at the time. Read the report.
That sourcing matters. The public account supports describing this as a reported agreement or arrangement, not as a fully disclosed production contract whose commercial terms have been independently confirmed. The report did not name a vehicle model, Taiwan plant, production date, annual capacity, contract duration, price, or investment amount. It also did not establish whether Foxconn would perform complete vehicle assembly or a narrower manufacturing role.

Nor does the report establish who would own the vehicle design, whether a Foxtron platform would be used, or how Mitsubishi engineering and Foxconn manufacturing might be divided. Those are material questions, not details that can safely be inferred from the companies’ broader EV ambitions.

Why would an iPhone assembler want to build cars?
Foxconn is the familiar English name for Hon Hai Precision Industry, also known as Hon Hai Technology Group. Its central automotive pitch is not simply to sell a Foxconn-branded car. It wants to bring contract manufacturing capabilities—supply-chain coordination, electronics, software integration, engineering and factory operations—to vehicle programs owned or backed by other businesses.
Foxconn calls this approach CDMS, or Contract Design and Manufacturing Service. In principle, combining design and engineering support with manufacturing could help an automaker develop an EV without building every capability or factory alone. Foxconn can also pursue business in vehicle electronics, software-defined vehicle systems, smart cockpits, batteries and semiconductors. That is broader than assembling finished cars, but it also means that a partnership announcement alone says little about how much revenue or profit any one vehicle program will generate.

What Foxconn gets—and what it has to prove
- Potential upside: A recognizable automaker could serve as a reference customer, helping Foxconn make its case to other manufacturers and potentially creating recurring production work.
- Execution test: Automotive programs require product validation, safety and quality controls, regulatory approval and long development timelines. A factory’s ability to assemble vehicles is only one part of the business.
- Economic test: Production volume, factory utilization, investment, warranty obligations and contract terms determine whether a program can be financially attractive. Those figures were not disclosed in the Mitsubishi report.
- Strategic limit: One reported customer relationship demonstrates interest, not durable demand, profitable margins, successful exports or repeat orders.
Foxconn’s own SEC-filed risk discussion points to challenges including customer dependence, shifts in EV demand, automakers’ factory capacity and the possibility that manufacturers choose to bring production in-house. The filing’s risk discussion is a useful counterweight to treating contract manufacturing as an automatic growth engine.
Where do Foxtron and the MIH platform fit?
Foxconn’s vehicle strategy includes Foxtron Vehicle Technologies, a joint venture with Taiwanese automaker Yulon. Foxtron is the vehicle-focused entity; it should not be treated as interchangeable with Foxconn/Hon Hai or assumed to be the manufacturer or brand behind every Foxconn partnership. Foxconn’s Taiwan EV materials describe Foxtron’s work across vehicle platforms and models, supply-chain and manufacturing management, and business-to-business and business-to-consumer activity. The MIH open EV platform and ecosystem is another part of the strategy: a framework intended to support vehicle development and collaboration. Neither its existence nor Foxtron’s programs establish that the Mitsubishi Motors vehicles would use an MIH platform. No such connection was specified in the report.
Why Mitsubishi Motors is a more meaningful test than Foxconn’s Ohio deals
Foxconn’s former U.S. strategy offers a cautionary comparison. In October 2021, Foxconn announced an agreement in principle to acquire the former General Motors plant in Lordstown, Ohio, and to make Lordstown Motors’ Endurance pickup. Foxconn’s announcement describes the proposed arrangement; the companies later announced the asset-purchase closing and joint-venture arrangements. The joint announcement.

The Lordstown program did not become a durable anchor for Foxconn’s automotive business. Lordstown failed, and proposed work with other customers did not turn into a lasting production pipeline. Reporting on the subsequent Ohio facility sale also described the end of a planned manufacturing arrangement with Monarch Tractor. TechCrunch’s report on Monarch and the factory sale.
This history does not show that Foxconn’s entire automotive strategy has failed. It does show why customer quality matters: a factory program depends on a customer’s financing, product readiness, regulatory progress and ability to generate demand. An established automaker such as Mitsubishi Motors could be a more credible counterpart than a financially fragile startup, but its name alone cannot establish volume or economics.

Which Mitsubishi—and which agreement?
“Mitsubishi” can refer to separate companies and partnerships. The reported electric-car manufacturing customer is Mitsubishi Motors. Two later announcements involve different Mitsubishi businesses and should not be treated as confirmation or expansion of that vehicle arrangement.
- Mitsubishi Motors: The March 2025 report identifies the automaker as Foxconn’s customer for EV manufacturing in Taiwan. The publicly reported terms remain limited. Transport Topics.
- Mitsubishi Fuso: In January 2026, Foxconn announced a planned collaboration related to zero-emission buses and a proposed bus-OEM structure. The announcement said the company was expected to be established in the second half of 2026; that plan is not evidence by itself that the entity was subsequently established. Foxconn’s announcement.
- Mitsubishi Electric: In April 2026, Mitsubishi Electric and Hon Hai signed a memorandum concerning automotive equipment. That is a separate equipment collaboration, not the Mitsubishi Motors vehicle-manufacturing report. Mitsubishi Electric’s announcement.
Foxconn also announced automotive initiatives with other partners, including a May 2026 strategic partnership with Poland’s ElectroMobility Poland to develop an EV ecosystem in Europe, and SiliconAuto, a 50/50 venture with Stellantis intended to design and sell automotive semiconductors. These show the breadth of Foxconn’s approach, but they are not evidence of additional Mitsubishi Motors production. Foxconn’s EV announcements; SiliconAuto announcement.
What would show that the reported deal is becoming a real production business?
The clearest evidence would be operational and commercial milestones rather than another general statement of intent:
- A definitive manufacturing agreement or an official Mitsubishi Motors confirmation that specifies the parties’ roles.
- A named vehicle, identified production site and dated start of production.
- Annual volume, program duration, factory investment and responsibility for warranty, recalls and quality.
- Evidence of export homologation for Australia and New Zealand, followed by production and deliveries in those markets.
- Foxconn disclosures showing automotive revenue, margins or production scale—and evidence of repeat programs or additional established automaker customers.
Without such details, the careful reading is that Foxconn has a strategically important reported customer relationship, not a proven high-volume business. The March 2025 report remains the basis for identifying Mitsubishi Motors and the intended Taiwan-to-Australasia plan; it should not be presented as a newly announced 2026 contract.
