A filament clip or tool rack is a practical next step; a replacement part should wait until you have confirmed it matches your exact printer model and follows the manufacturer’s material guidance.
Start with setup, not a project
A useful print begins with a correctly prepared machine. Prusa’s setup guidance for its listed i3 printer families calls for first-start Z calibration and emphasizes first-layer height: a nozzle set too high or too low can contribute to adhesion problems or print defects. Because those instructions are specific to those printer families, use the setup and calibration procedure in your own printer’s handbook.

Check that the chosen filament is compatible with your printer, including its required filament diameter and supported material. A successful print with one material does not establish that another material will work with the same settings.

A test print gives you a chance to inspect how your machine handles basic geometry before committing time and filament to a more involved design. Prusa recommends testing before a first complex print. Its multi-feature example includes 21 tests, with features such as holes, bridges and spheres to inspect. That number describes the design of Prusa’s particular model, not a general measure of printer quality. Prusa also suggests Benchy as another test option.

Look at the first layer as well as the finished shape. A test is informative, not a guarantee that every model, setting or material will print successfully. For a reference model and its details, see Prusa’s beginner guide to 3D printing; its test-print suggestions are examples, not universal requirements.
Choose a small helper for your workspace
Once the printer is behaving as expected, pick an object that addresses a small, visible annoyance. Organizers and clips are useful because they can solve a specific storage or handling problem without requiring an elaborate project. Prusa’s beginner examples include a filament dust filter, filament clips, a tool rack, a nozzle organizer and an SD-card stand.

Before printing, compare the model’s dimensions and intended use with your own equipment. A clip or organizer may depend on a particular spool shape, filament arrangement or tool size; a design that looks useful may not fit your setup. Prusa’s beginner examples can help you identify project types, but check the individual model’s requirements before sending it to the printer.

Make a jig or tool for a real task
If you have a repair, measuring or workshop job in mind, a simple task-specific tool can be more valuable than a general-purpose novelty print. Prusa’s workshop examples include a parallel marking tool, screw measuring device, contour duplicator, bevel gauge, corner clamp, painter’s pyramids and Allen-key handles. Some designs can be customized for size, color or function.

Choose one that fits a task you actually do, and verify its dimensions and intended use before printing. A useful progression is to move from a diagnostic model, to a workspace helper, then to a task-specific jig. There is no universal best first object: the right choice depends on your needs, printer capabilities and available material.
Use extra care with replacement parts
A replacement part is not simply another useful print. It must be designed for the exact printer model and, where relevant, its version. Prusa publishes STL files and print settings for parts and upgrades for its own machines. Its guidance recommends PETG for most of those printable parts, while specifying ASA or ABS for its fan shroud. These material instructions apply to the parts and equipment covered by Prusa’s guidance; they should not be transferred to another printer without that manufacturer’s instructions.

Before printing a functional replacement, confirm the model match and follow the source’s material, orientation and print-setting directions. Prusa’s printable-parts documentation is specific to its own products.

How to pick your first practical project
- For learning the machine: choose a diagnostic model that exercises features you want to inspect, such as bridges or holes.
- For a quick workspace improvement: consider a filament clip, tool rack or organizer, after checking the fit.
- For a particular job: choose a jig or tool that matches a real measuring, repair or workshop task.
- For a repair: use a replacement file only when it is intended for your exact printer model and includes suitable material guidance.
Compare candidate projects by the problem they solve, their fit to your task or workspace, their complexity, and compatibility with your printer and material. For test models, consider which features they exercise and whether a prepared file is available for your machine. The available manufacturer examples do not establish a reliable cross-printer ranking for print time, cost, durability or difficulty, so treat those as model- and setup-specific rather than assuming one project is universally easiest or strongest.
