Start by checking whether your distribution and processor architecture support the browser you want, then compare how your essential sites and apps work on your machine. If both options meet those needs, choose based on your preferred update route, account ecosystem, and privacy settings—not broad claims that one is always faster, safer, or lighter.
What “Chromium-based” means on Linux
Firefox is Mozilla’s browser. Chromium-based browsers use the Chromium browser project; Google Chrome is one example, alongside browsers such as Microsoft Edge and Opera. Their shared foundation does not make them identical: availability, packaging, update policies, features, and account integration can differ by browser and distribution.

This comparison focuses on Firefox and Google Chrome where the cited platform requirements apply. Do not assume that Chrome’s Linux support requirements or installation instructions automatically apply to every Chromium-based browser.
Check Linux distribution and architecture first
Google Chrome
Google’s Chrome download guidance lists 64-bit Ubuntu 18.04 or later, Debian 10 or later, openSUSE 15.5 or later, and Fedora Linux 39 or later. It also specifies a supported 64-bit processor: x86-64 with SSE3 or 64-bit ARM. These are requirements from Google’s current guidance, not a guarantee that every Chromium-based browser supports the same distributions or architectures. Check Google’s page for the current requirements that apply to your system before installing.

Firefox
Firefox’s published 143.0.3 Linux requirements list glibc 2.17 or later (2.28 or later on ARM64), GTK+ 3.14 or later, libglib 2.42 or later, libstdc++ 4.8.1 or later (6.0 or later on ARM64), and X.Org 1.0 or later, with 1.7 or later recommended. DBus, NetworkManager, and PulseAudio are recommended for optimal functionality. These figures are specific to Firefox 143.0.3; Mozilla warns that Linux distributions’ packages can have different requirements. Check the requirements for the release and package you intend to use.
32-bit x86 systems
Mozilla announced on September 5, 2025 that Firefox 145 would end 32-bit x86 Linux builds. The announcement said Firefox ESR 140 32-bit builds would receive security updates until at least September 2026. That date has passed, so the old notice does not establish whether 32-bit builds currently receive updates. Check Mozilla’s support announcement and current release information before choosing a browser for a 32-bit system. Mozilla’s authors wrote: “If you are currently using Firefox on a 32-bit x86 Linux system, we strongly encourage you to move to a 64-bit operating system and install the 64-bit version of Firefox, which will continue to be supported and updated.”

How installation choices affect updates
On Linux, the package source matters: it determines how the browser is installed and can affect how quickly you receive upstream releases. Mozilla’s Linux installation guide describes distro package managers, Mozilla’s vendor repositories for supported distributions, Flatpak, Snap, and tarball builds. Mozilla notes that distribution packages may arrive later than an upstream release and may be ESR or unbranded builds.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteGoogle’s Chrome instructions direct users to download and install the vendor package through the software or package manager. The practical choice is not simply Firefox versus Chromium: it is also whether you want updates managed by your distribution, a vendor repository, a sandboxed package format, or another supported route. Follow the current instructions for your distribution and release; package commands and repository steps can change.

Compare the browsers against your actual workload
There is no suitable independent head-to-head Linux benchmark in the sources cited here, so they do not establish a general speed or memory winner. Results can depend on the machine, graphics stack, browser build, sites, extensions, and profile state. If performance, graphics behavior, stability, or web-app compatibility is decisive, install both supported options and test them on the same machine with the same sites, extensions, and comparable profile state.
Check the sites and tasks you cannot work around: work or school web apps, video services, account sign-in, accessibility tools, and required extensions. A particular service may behave better in one browser on your system; that is a useful reason to choose it, but it is not proof that the browser is universally more compatible.

Graphics acceleration
Mozilla says Firefox selects performance settings based on the computer’s hardware and operating system. Its performance settings guidance explains that GPU acceleration can help display video, games, and animations while reducing CPU load. The article, updated May 30, 2026, also says that disabling acceleration may help with video problems or flicker, high GPU temperature, or graphics-driver crashes. The option may be hidden if the driver is incompatible, and distro packages may have settings controlled by the distribution. These points describe Firefox’s controls and troubleshooting; they do not establish a comparative speed advantage.

Privacy, security, and sandboxing: what the evidence can—and cannot—show
Privacy depends on settings and use
The available evidence does not establish a current, feature-by-feature privacy winner. Compare the tracking protection, telemetry, synchronization, account sign-in, and extensions you actually plan to use, and consult each browser’s current documentation for those settings. A browser’s project or brand alone does not tell you how your chosen configuration will behave.

Keep the installed build maintained
For either browser, use a supported build and a package route that receives updates. Firefox’s Linux sandbox behavior can also depend on distribution policy and install path. Mozilla’s Linux security warning, updated March 5, 2025, explains that Firefox uses unprivileged user namespaces for sandboxed processes. Some distributions restrict them unless an AppArmor profile is present; Mozilla says profiles cover certain paths, including Snap and Debian packages, and may not cover tarball installs or local development builds. This is a specific compatibility caveat, not a claim about every distribution or a ranking against Chrome.
Why historical vulnerability totals are not a safety score
The UK Competition and Markets Authority’s 2025 browser appendix reports CISA-known exploited vulnerability records for 2022–2023, using data retrieved April 10, 2024. It lists 3 Chrome-only records, 24 records affecting all Chromium browsers, 15 for WebKit, and 8 for Firefox. The all-Chromium category includes multiple browsers, not only Chrome. The appendix also cautions that one CVE can include multiple vulnerabilities, that only public disclosures are represented, and that records generally do not distinguish device or platform versions. These historical totals are not a current Linux-specific measure of safety and cannot identify which browser is safest today. See the CMA browser comparison appendix for the categories and limitations.
Choose based on the reason that matters most
| Choose | When it makes sense | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Firefox | You prefer Mozilla’s ecosystem or settings, and Firefox is supported on your distribution. | Confirm your package source and update cadence; test your essential sites and extensions. |
| Google Chrome | A required site or work workflow is confirmed to work better in Chrome, or Google account integration fits your routine. | Check Google’s current Linux distribution and architecture requirements. |
| Another Chromium-based browser | A particular Chromium browser meets your needs better than Firefox or Chrome. | Check that browser’s own Linux support, package source, update policy, and site behavior; Chrome’s requirements do not automatically apply. |
| Test both | Your deciding concern is performance, graphics, stability, or web-app behavior. | Use the same machine, workload, extensions, and comparable profile state; do not treat one-off impressions as universal benchmarks. |
Is Firefox or Chrome better on Linux?
Neither is best for every Linux user. Choose Firefox if it fits your distribution and workflow; choose Chrome or another Chromium-based browser when its specific site compatibility or ecosystem is the better match. When speed, graphics, or stability is the deciding factor, test the supported options on your own machine rather than relying on a universal ranking.
