If Firefox’s Add Split View option is missing, first check that you’re running Firefox 149 or later and that you’re opening the menu on a tab—not a bookmark. Mozilla documents three ways to create a split; the steps below help pinpoint why the command may not appear or work.
1. Check your Firefox version
Mozilla says Split View is available starting with Firefox 149. If your installed version is older, update Firefox and check for the feature again. See Mozilla’s Split View in Firefox help article for the documented instructions.
2. Open the menu on a tab, not a bookmark
Right-click—or Control-click on Mac—an actual tab in the tab bar, then choose Add Split View. The command is associated with a tab, not a bookmark in the Bookmarks Toolbar. That distinction can be easy to miss when using vertical tabs.
In a March 2026 support thread, a Mozilla moderator identified the cause for one Firefox 149 user who could not find the option: “Looks like you are right-clicking on a Bookmark in the Bookmarks Toolbar and not on a Tab.” If you are unsure what you clicked, try again directly on the tab itself. 3. Try another documented way to create a split
If the tab context menu does not offer the command, use one of Mozilla’s other documented methods:
- Pair two existing tabs: Select both tabs, then right-click or Control-click and choose Open in Split View. If the tabs are far apart, Firefox creates the split beside the active tab.
- Use the keyboard and mouse: Hold Alt on Windows or Linux—or Option on Mac—while clicking another tab in the same window.
Starting from one tab opens a list for the second pane. Choose an open tab there, or select the right pane and enter a website address in the address bar.

4. Check whether the Split View preference is disabled
A Mozilla Support forum reply identifies browser.tabs.splitView.enabled as a setting that can prevent Split View from working when it is false. This is a forum-based troubleshooting lead, not part of Mozilla’s ordinary setup instructions. If you are comfortable inspecting Firefox’s advanced preferences, check whether the setting is disabled; avoid changing unfamiliar preferences. 5. Make sure the behavior you expect is supported
- Split View displays two tabs at a time; it does not accept pinned tabs.
- Closing either tab in a pair dissolves the split.
- Find in Page applies to the active pane only.
- Mozilla says splits return when you reopen a recently closed window or when Open previous windows and tabs is enabled. Reopening a closed tab with Ctrl+Shift+T (or Command+Shift+T on Mac) does not restore the split.

If the option is still missing
After updating, confirm you clicked a tab and try the other documented creation methods. If none works, the sources cited here do not establish a general fix or official escalation procedure for that situation. A preference reset, reinstall, or profile repair is not a guaranteed solution.
