You can save a PNG locally or copy it to the clipboard. Mozilla says the feature collects some interaction events but not the page URL or details of the captured image. The tool is convenient for quick webpage captures, though its documented keyboard controls have a Wayland limitation, and it no longer offers the former cloud-storage workflow.
What Firefox Screenshots can capture
Firefox’s built-in tool offers four capture choices:

- Selected region: Drag to mark a custom area of the page.
- Page element: Select an automatically highlighted element.
- Visible portion: Capture what is currently visible in the browser window.
- Full page: Capture the entire webpage, including content beyond the current viewport.
Mozilla’s instructions are in Firefox Help: Take screenshots in Firefox.

Open the capture tool
On Windows or Linux, press Ctrl + Shift + S. On macOS, press Command + Shift + S. You can also right-click the webpage and choose Take Screenshot, or add a Screenshot button to the toolbar.

Select the capture area and output
- Open the page you want to capture and launch Screenshots using one of the methods above.
- Choose a highlighted page element, drag over a custom region, or use the controls for the visible portion or full page.
- Review the selection, then choose to download the image, copy it to the clipboard, or cancel.
Firefox downloads the image as a PNG to its default download folder. The clipboard option is useful when you want to paste the capture into another application without first locating a file.
Adjust selection with the keyboard
Firefox Help documents keyboard movement for the crosshair and selection edges. Arrow keys move by one pixel; Shift plus an arrow moves by ten pixels. Ctrl or Command plus an arrow can move a selected corner or region to a viewport edge. Mozilla notes that moving the crosshair does not work on Wayland.
What Firefox Screenshots collects—and what Mozilla says it does not
Mozilla Firefox Help says Screenshots collects interaction events, such as using the Copy or Save full page button. Mozilla also states: “We never collect data such as the URL or details of the image captured.” This is Mozilla’s disclosure, not an independent audit of network traffic.
Mozilla identifies the Firefox setting Allow Firefox to send technical and interaction data to Mozilla as the control for disabling browser-side technical and interaction data collection. The support article also describes a web-based component and relates website data collection to Do Not Track. The current Firefox Privacy Notice covers broader categories of data handling, but the available wording does not establish the present relationship between that legacy reference and current website behavior. Do not assume that disabling the setting turns off every kind of Firefox data processing.
For more context, see Mozilla’s Firefox Privacy Notice and the feature-specific Firefox Screenshots help page.
Limits and compatibility details
The documented Wayland limitation concerns moving the crosshair with the keyboard. Mozilla’s current support information does not establish every page type on which a screenshot might fail, so it is not possible to promise that every site or page will capture successfully. If a particular page does not behave as expected, try the visible-portion or region selection, and check whether the problem is specific to that page or capture choice.
Older Mozilla materials conflict about Private Browsing support: an older FAQ says the feature did not work there, while Mozilla’s 2018 launch announcement described support. Current available support text does not resolve the present behavior. The old FAQ also lists page restrictions, but it should not be treated as a definitive current compatibility list.
What happened to cloud storage?
Firefox Screenshots once included a cloud service, but it is not the current save-and-share workflow. Mozilla’s January 2019 transition post said uploads to the Screenshots server would stop starting with Firefox 67, released in May, and described an export period for existing server-stored shots. Current Firefox Help describes downloading captures locally or copying them to the clipboard—not storing them in a My Shots cloud library.
See Mozilla’s January 2019 Screenshots transition announcement for the historical change.

For automated webpage captures from code, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. A single GET request returns an image or PDF; cookie banners, newsletter popups and chat widgets are removed before capture, and bot checks, blank pages and failed loads are not billed. AI agents can use its MCP tools to take screenshots. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.
Example cURL request (replace the target URL as needed; get an API key and see options in the ScreenshotNeo documentation):

Verdict
Firefox Screenshots is a practical built-in option for saving a quick region, page element, visible viewport or full webpage as a PNG, or copying it to another app. Its clearest privacy statement comes from Mozilla itself: it reports collecting some interaction events while saying it does not collect the URL or image details. Be mindful of the documented Wayland keyboard limitation, and use a separate workflow if you need cloud storage or automated captures.
