You may not need an extension: Firefox can capture a selected area, the visible page, or a full web page and save or copy the image. For markup, desktop-wide captures, or more control, consider SnapLocal, Flameshot, or Firefox Developer Tools. If you use Wayland, check the specific limitation Mozilla documents: moving the screenshot crosshair does not work in that environment, but this does not mean all Firefox screenshot capture is broken.
Choose the right kind of screenshot tool
Start with what you need to capture. Firefox’s screenshot interface and Developer Tools work on web pages; Flameshot is a Linux desktop screenshot tool. A browser extension can add browser-based annotation, while an integration add-on may depend on a separate application.
- Web page only: Try Firefox’s built-in screenshot interface first.
- One page element or repeatable capture: Use Firefox Developer Tools.
- Capture and mark up page images in the browser: Consider SnapLocal, after reviewing its current listing and permissions.
- Capture the desktop and annotate on screen: Consider Flameshot, checking support for your Linux distribution and Wayland setup.
- ShareX workflow: The Firefox add-on connects to the ShareX application; it is not a standalone Linux screenshot tool.
Use Firefox’s built-in screenshot interface
For ordinary web-page screenshots, Firefox already captures a selected region, the visible page, or the full page. It can save the image or copy it to the clipboard. Mozilla’s instructions are in Take screenshots in Firefox.
On Wayland, Mozilla documents a limitation with moving the screenshot crosshair. That specific caveat should not be read as saying all Firefox screenshot capture is unavailable. If the interface does not behave as expected, try Developer Tools or a desktop capture application, and check compatibility for your exact session.

Use Developer Tools for full-page and element captures
Firefox Developer Tools can capture the entire page or a single element. In the Inspector, use the “Screenshot Node” command to capture the selected element. Firefox also provides a :screenshot console helper with options for delay, clipboard, filename, full-page capture, and CSS selector. See Mozilla’s Taking screenshots documentation for the current workflow and syntax.
This route is more technical than a one-click extension, but it avoids installing another add-on and is useful when the target is a particular page element or the capture needs configuration.

Compare the alternatives
| Option | Best for | What it offers | Check before choosing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Firefox screenshot interface | Quick web-page captures | Region, visible-page, and full-page capture; save or copy | Mozilla documents a crosshair-movement limitation on Wayland. |
| Firefox Developer Tools | Full-page, element-only, or configurable captures | Full-page capture, Inspector “Screenshot Node,” and :screenshot options |
More technical than a one-click extension. |
| SnapLocal | Browser capture with markup | Its Mozilla Add-ons listing claims area, visible, full-page, and delayed capture, annotation, blur, redaction, clipboard, PNG saving, and local processing with no network requests. | These are listing claims, not independently audited here. The listing had zero reviews when accessed; check the current listing. |
| Flameshot | Linux desktop capture and annotation | Its official site describes annotation tools, customization, CLI support, and Linux packages; installation options include distro packages, AppImage, and Flatpak. | Distribution package versions may lag upstream; Wayland behavior depends on the specific setup and is not established for every compositor or desktop. |
| ShareX Firefox add-on | Adding ShareX actions to Firefox context menus | Adds “Upload with ShareX” for image, video, audio, and text selections. | It requires the ShareX application. The cited add-on listing does not establish Linux availability of that application. |
For any capture tool, compare whether it captures only web content or the whole desktop, whether it handles full pages or individual elements, how annotation and redaction work, whether it supports keyboard or command-line use, where processing happens, and whether it fits your display server, desktop, and distribution.
When SnapLocal may fit
SnapLocal is a browser-based option if you want capture and markup together. Its Mozilla Add-ons listing describes local processing, no network requests, area, visible-page, full-page, and delayed capture, plus annotation, blur, redaction, clipboard, and PNG saving. Treat privacy and feature statements as claims made by the listing rather than independently verified guarantees. Before installing, inspect the current author, permissions, update history, and privacy information.

When Flameshot may fit
Flameshot is a desktop application rather than a Firefox-only tool, so it is the more relevant choice when you need to capture outside the browser or annotate a selected screen area. Its official site describes annotation, customization, and command-line support; its installation documentation lists distribution packages, AppImage, and Flatpak: Flameshot and installation documentation.
Package freshness varies by distribution. Check the version and installation guidance for your distro, then test the application in your actual desktop and display-server session. The available official installation information does not settle behavior across all Wayland compositors and Linux builds.

Check an add-on before installing it
Mozilla identifies addons.mozilla.org as its official site for discovering and installing Firefox add-ons. Add-ons are created by a broad community; some may be automatically published and reviewed by editors after listing. A marketplace listing alone is not independent security assurance. Before installing an extension, review its author, requested permissions, update history, and privacy statements. Mozilla explains its add-on process in Find and install add-ons to add features to Firefox.
