Firefox Developer Tools: Open DevTools and Fix Shortcut Problems

In Firefox desktop, open Tools > Web Developer > Web Developer Tools, or use Ctrl+Shift+I on Windows and Linux or Command+Option+I on macOS. Firefox opens the toolbox for the page in the active tab, with the last-used tool selected.

Open Developer Tools from Firefox’s menu

1. Switch to the Firefox tab containing the page you want to inspect.
2. Choose Tools > Web Developer > Web Developer Tools.
3. The toolbox opens attached to the active tab’s page, with the most recently used tool selected. Mozilla’s Firefox DevTools documentation describes the tools built into Firefox and the general launch route.

Use the keyboard shortcut

Mozilla also lists F12 as a way to toggle Developer Tools. The exact behavior can depend on the toolbox state: Mozilla’s shortcut reference says F12 brings a detached toolbox forward, or closes it when it is in the foreground. Open a specific tool directly

These shortcuts open or focus a particular panel rather than simply using the general toolbox shortcut. On macOS, use Option (often labeled Alt) in place of Ctrl where shown.

The toolbox also includes tools such as the Inspector, JavaScript Debugger, Performance tools, and Accessibility Inspector. Mozilla’s shortcut documentation lists the direct panel shortcuts.

If a Firefox DevTools shortcut does not work

• Use the menu instead. A desktop environment or window manager may have claimed the key combination before Firefox can use it.
• Check whether the shortcut was customized. Mozilla documents an experimental shortcut-customization feature beginning with Firefox 147. On desktop, enter about:keyboard in the address bar, find the relevant shortcut, select its Change control, and press the replacement combination. Use Reset for one shortcut or Reset all shortcuts to defaults to restore defaults.
• Account for keyboard layout and platform limits. Mozilla notes that layout support for customization is limited; the feature is not supported on Android or iOS. The documented desktop launch shortcuts should not be assumed to apply to Firefox mobile.
