The Firefox Crash Reporter appears after Firefox closes unexpectedly. To stop it appearing repeatedly, first check whether Firefox is actually crashing; turning off automatic crash-report submission changes whether data is sent, but does not prevent the crash. Start by checking about:crashes, then use Troubleshoot Mode to narrow down likely causes.
Identify which Firefox prompt you are seeing
A Crash Reporter dialog that appears after Firefox exits unexpectedly indicates a crash event. It offers choices such as submitting a report, viewing details, restarting Firefox, or quitting. If you restart and Firefox offers to restore your windows and tabs, try a new session if the crash happens again after restoring them: a page from the restored session may be involved. Mozilla’s Crash Reporter help explains the dialog and report options.

A separate notification may appear later asking about previously unsent crash reports. That is not necessarily evidence of a new crash at the moment it appears. Mozilla’s crash-reporting guidance distinguishes the reporter from later report-submission prompts.

Review the listed crash reports. The page lets you inspect reports and submit them; note the report ID if you need help diagnosing a recurring crash.

If Firefox will not start, use the operating-system-specific Crash Reports folder described in Mozilla’s Crash Reporter help.
If Firefox does not close unexpectedly and instead stays open but stops responding, that is a hang rather than a crash. Follow Mozilla’s crash and hang troubleshooting guidance for the symptom you actually have.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTurn off automatic report submission only if privacy is your concern
In desktop Firefox, open Settings → Privacy & Security → Firefox Data Collection and Use and change Automatically send crash reports. With automatic sending off, reports remain on your device unless you submit them manually. This setting controls report sharing; it does not fix the underlying crash or stop the reporter from appearing after another unexpected shutdown. See Mozilla’s Firefox data collection settings for the current option.
Use Troubleshoot Mode to test common causes
Start Firefox in Troubleshoot Mode and see whether the crashes continue. If they stop in this mode, Mozilla says an extension, theme, or hardware acceleration is a likely cause. Test those factors individually after returning to normal mode so you can identify what changes the behavior. If Firefox still crashes in Troubleshoot Mode, the problem may have another cause; use the crash report ID and Mozilla’s troubleshooting steps rather than assuming a particular add-on or program is responsible. Mozilla’s crash troubleshooting article covers the mode and follow-up.

If a crash warning identifies a third-party module, Windows users can inspect loaded modules in Firefox by entering about:third-party in the address bar. Mozilla documents how to review the list and temporarily block a suspected module. Use this as a targeted test based on the warning or evidence in the crash report, not as a reason to blame antivirus software or another named program without evidence. See Mozilla’s guidance on third-party modules.
When the popup appears while Firefox is not open
Do not assume the cause from timing alone. First establish whether Firefox recently crashed, whether the prompt concerns unsent reports, and what the exact message says. If it continues, gather your operating system, the popup wording, when it appears, and the latest crash ID from about:crashes if available. Those details help distinguish a fresh crash from a delayed notification or another background process.
Older forum posts sometimes recommend registry changes or environment variables to suppress the reporter. Those suggestions date from 2012 and 2014; current Mozilla guidance documents report-submission settings and crash diagnosis instead. Avoid applying old system-level instructions as a general fix.
