Firefox 158, released to the release channel on October 13, 2026, adds built-in JPEG XL (JXL) support as a regular browser feature. That is a major change from Firefox 152, where JXL was available only as an experiment in the Firefox Labs panel. Mozilla says the format generally compresses better than WebP, JPEG, PNG and GIF, although there is no single improvement percentage that applies to every image, encoder or quality setting.
What changed in Firefox 158
Mozilla’s Firefox 158 release notes state: “Firefox now supports the JPEG XL image format, which generally has better compression than WebP, JPEG, PNG, and GIF.” The wording matters: this is an official release-channel feature, not a hidden preference or a nightly-only test.

Firefox 152, first offered on June 16, 2026, introduced JPEG XL as an experimental capability. Users had to open Settings, go to Firefox Labs and enable the option. Firefox 158 moves that support into the normal browser release, so users running the current release build no longer need to treat JXL as an experiment.

JPEG XL is an image format standardized as ISO/IEC 18181. It is designed for both lossy and lossless compression and for modern image features, including high-quality photographic images. The format can target smaller files without requiring a lossy workflow for every asset, while still supporting lossless storage when exact pixel preservation matters.

MDN’s technical guide notes that it knows of no royalty-bearing patents for JPEG XL. That is useful context for developers evaluating a format, but it does not remove the practical need to check browser and platform compatibility before replacing an established format.
How Mozilla implemented support
In an August 24, 2026 “Intent to ship: JPEG XL” message, Mozilla engineer Timothy Nikkel said, “As of Firefox 157 I intend to turn JPEG XL decoding on by default on all platforms.” The message identifies Mozilla’s Rust decoder as jxl-rs, the preference as image.jxl.enabled, and platform coverage as all platforms.

An intent-to-ship message describes an engineering plan. Firefox 158’s release notes are the authoritative evidence that support reached the release channel. Advanced users who need to inspect the setting can open Firefox’s about:config page and search for image.jxl.enabled; ordinary users should not need to change it in Firefox 158.

Mozilla’s claim is a general compression advantage, not a universal benchmark result. File size depends on the source image, encoder, quality target, chroma settings and whether the output is lossy or lossless. A site should measure its own images rather than promise a fixed percentage reduction.

| Format | Compression and quality | Lossless support | Browser availability | Migration consideration |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| JPEG XL | Mozilla describes it as generally better-compressing than WebP, JPEG, PNG and GIF; results vary by image and settings. | Yes | Firefox 158 supports it in the regular release; support elsewhere varies. | Requires compatibility testing and fallbacks where JXL is not available. |
| WebP | Efficient lossy and lossless compression for many web images. | Yes | Widely deployed, but exact support still depends on browser and version. | Existing tooling and browser coverage can make migration comparatively straightforward. |
| JPEG | Established lossy format, especially common for photographs. | No standard lossless JPEG workflow in typical web use. | Very broad legacy support. | Smallest compatibility risk, but less flexible for modern lossless delivery. |
| PNG | Lossless compression, usually useful for graphics, text and transparency rather than large photographs. | Yes | Very broad support. | Reliable fallback when exact pixels or alpha transparency are required. |
| GIF | Limited-color compression and simple animation; inefficient for photographic images. | Yes, within its constrained palette | Very broad legacy support. | Often retained for compatibility or simple animated assets. |
Does Firefox support JXL files now?
Yes. Firefox 158 release builds include JPEG XL support, so a compatible .jxl file can be decoded by the browser without enabling Firefox Labs. Websites can also deliver JXL images to Firefox users when their server and application pipeline produce the format.
How to enable JPEG XL in Firefox
- Update Firefox to version 158 or a later release-channel build.
- Open a local
.jxlfile or visit a page that serves a JPEG XL image. - If you are troubleshooting an older release, open Settings and select Firefox Labs; Firefox 152 exposed the experimental JPEG XL control there.
- For advanced diagnostics, open
about:config, search forimage.jxl.enabled, and confirm the preference is enabled. Change advanced preferences only when you understand the effect.
Can websites serve JPEG XL to everyone?
Not reliably. Firefox 158 improves the audience for JXL, but browser support remains uneven. MDN’s compatibility context records Chrome support as flag-gated, illustrating why a site cannot assume that every visitor can decode a JXL response.

The practical deployment pattern is content negotiation or a fallback chain. A server can offer JXL when the client advertises support and return WebP, JPEG or PNG otherwise. HTML authors can use a <picture> element with a JXL source followed by a broadly supported fallback, while image pipelines should retain the original asset and generate each required derivative.
Before switching production traffic, test cache keys, CDN behavior, image dimensions, transparency, animation and quality settings. A technically smaller file is not useful if unsupported clients receive a broken image or if the encoding step increases processing cost beyond the delivery savings.

Why this is a boost even without universal support
Formats gain momentum when a major browser ships dependable decoding by default. Firefox 158 gives developers a stable target for testing and gives users a straightforward way to open JXL images. It also makes dual-format delivery more credible: publishers can begin measuring JXL in real traffic while preserving established fallbacks for browsers that lack support.
The change does not make JPEG XL an automatic replacement for every image format. JPEG remains the safest compatibility choice, PNG remains valuable for lossless graphics and transparency, and WebP may fit an existing pipeline with fewer changes. Firefox’s release-channel support lowers one barrier; browser coverage, tooling and measured results still determine whether a particular site should adopt JXL.
