Dead fish, eels and birds were found in Brislington Brook after a 1 September 2026 fire at an industrial unit on Emery Road in Bristol. The Environment Agency said contaminated firewater runoff entered the brook and moved downstream, linking the pollution to the wildlife deaths while its investigation continued.
What happened at Brislington Brook
The fire broke out at an industrial unit on Emery Road, Bristol, on 1 September 2026. Foam and a foul smell were reported in Brislington Brook the following day. Dead eels, fish and birds were later found in the waterway near St Anne’s Woods.

In a report published on 11 October 2026, Bristol24/7 said the Environment Agency had connected the deaths with firewater runoff from the incident. The runoff entered the brook and spread downstream, creating a pathway from the industrial site to affected wildlife.

The Environment Agency said: “Sampling confirmed that chemicals from the firewater run-off entered the brook and spread downstream.” That confirms chemical contamination and downstream movement, but it does not identify a single substance as the cause.

The agency also said: “Firewater incidents are complex and involve multiple pollutants. Our assessment indicates the eel deaths may have resulted from a combination of factors, including multiple chemicals acting together and the levels of pollution changing throughout the incident.”
That explanation means the precise chemical mixture, concentrations and exposure duration had not been resolved in the published account. It also leaves open the possibility that conditions changed as contaminated water moved through the brook.

Which animals were affected?
- Dead eels were reported in the brook.
- Fish were also found dead.
- Dead birds were reported near the affected stretch.
- No final wildlife mortality count had been published.
The observations of foam and a strong odour are signs that the water was visibly and chemically affected, but they cannot by themselves establish the toxicity or concentration of any individual pollutant.

- Versatile Use for Freshwater and Ponds: This aquarium water test kit is versatile and suitable for both freshwater and saltwater environments. It can be used in various aquariums, fish tanks, ponds, pools, and shrimp tanks, making it easy to monitor water quality and ensure your filter functions properly. Experts recommend testing your aquarium water at least twice a week to maintain optimal water quality.
- Fast and Accurate Results: Get accurate results in minutes with just 3 steps: 1) Dip the test strip into water for 2 seconds for pads 1-7; dip pad 8 (Ammonia nitrogen) separately for 5 seconds. 2) Remove the strip without shaking off excess water. Hold horizontally for 30 seconds for pads 1-7, wait 180 seconds to read Pad 8 (Ammonia nitrogen). 3) Compare the colors to the chart for up to 99% accuracy and take necessary action.
- Extended Shelf Life: The test strips are packaged in a well-sealed bottle to ensure they remain effective over time. This protects the strips from moisture and other environmental factors, ensuring you have reliable testing materials on hand when needed.
- Convenient Use: With this kit, you can test your aquarium water at home without the need to send samples to a lab, saving you both time and money. Enjoy peace of mind knowing your aquarium water is balanced and safe without the stress or extra expense.
That precaution applies to wading, swimming, collecting water, handling dead animals and allowing pets to enter the brook. Anyone who has already come into contact with contaminated water should wash exposed skin and clothing and seek medical advice if irritation or other symptoms develop.
What remains unknown
The available update did not publish a final chemical profile, laboratory concentration, confirmed total of dead animals or completed clearance date. It also did not establish how far the contamination travelled beyond the reported downstream area.

- Complete water quality test kit (215 total tests) – One water testing kit for ponds and water gardens that checks the 4 essentials: pH, ammonia (NH3/NH4+), nitrite (NO2-), and phosphate (PO4³-). Ideal as a routine freshwater test kit for koi and goldfish ponds.
- Easy pH test kit + water pH tester results – Fill to the 5 mL line, add drops, cap and shake, then match to the chart. Quick, repeatable pH test results for ongoing pond maintenance (great when you need a dependable pH water tester at home).
- Ammonia test kit for fish health (better than guessing) – Catch spikes early after feeding, storms, new fish, or filter cleanouts. A reliable alternative to ammonia test strips for fish tank users who want a clear color-match method for ponds.
- Phosphate test kit to help control algae pressure – Phosphate can fuel algae and cloudy/green water. Track trends over time with a true phosphate test kit so you can adjust filtration, feeding, and water changes with confidence.
- Freshwater pond test kit + saltwater range chart – Built for pond water testing, with a color chart that also includes saltwater ranges. Includes glass test tubes, caps, transfer pipette, and all required reagents.
Those details matter because firewater can contain a changing mixture of substances from burning materials, stored products and firefighting operations. A waterway can therefore require repeated sampling even after visible foam or odour has disappeared.

Investigation and requested retesting
The Environment Agency’s investigation was still under way when the report appeared. Friends of Brislington Brook asked Bristol City Council to retest the water, seeking additional confirmation of conditions in the brook.

Until regulators publish updated results and an explicit clearance notice, the practical advice remains to keep people and animals out of the affected water. Residents who see more dead wildlife, unusual discolouration, foam or odour should report it to the relevant local authorities rather than touching the water or carcasses.
What the evidence establishes
| Question | Published position |
|---|---|
| Where did the incident occur? | Brislington Brook in Bristol, downstream of an Emery Road industrial unit. |
| When was the fire? | 1 September 2026. |
| What pollution route was identified? | Chemical-containing firewater runoff entered the brook and spread downstream. |
| What wildlife deaths were reported? | Fish, eels and birds. |
| Has a final cause been isolated? | No. The agency cited multiple pollutants, combined effects and changing pollution levels. |
| Is a final death count available? | No final mortality total was published. |
| Has the brook been declared clear? | No clearance status had been published in the 11 October update. |
What to watch for next
A definitive update should clarify the chemicals detected, measured concentrations, the confirmed number and species of wildlife affected, the downstream reach tested and whether follow-up samples meet the criteria for public access. Until those findings are released, the firewater runoff remains the documented explanation for the deaths, while the exact toxic mechanism is still being assessed.
