Firefox 158.0 reached Mozilla’s Release channel on October 13, 2026. Its headline feature is Smart Window, which can suggest information for web forms from relevant open tabs and saved autofill data. The update also fixes 77 security flaws, including 30 rated high risk, so installing it through Mozilla’s normal update channel is advisable.
What is new in Firefox 158?
Firefox 158 combines a new form-assistance feature with browser, document, translation and graphics improvements. Mozilla says Smart Window is being released gradually, so two computers running the same version may not show the feature at the same time.

Smart Window form assistance
When Smart Window is available, clicking a form field—or choosing Fill from sources—lets Firefox suggest data drawn from relevant tabs that are open and from information already saved in the browser’s autofill store. It is an assistive suggestion system, not a promise that every field will be completed automatically or that every website will be recognized.

Because suggestions can reflect both page context and saved autofill data, review each proposed value before submitting a form. The staged rollout also means that an apparent absence of Smart Window is not necessarily an installation failure.

PDF, image and interface changes

Firefox 158 security fixes
Mozilla Foundation Security Advisory 2026-106, announced October 13, 2026, marks the Firefox 158 advisory impact as “high” and lists the individual CVEs. Mozilla also says it now issues a separate advisory for each internally identified memory-safety bug rather than combining those bugs into one CVE.

The categories overlap: a use-after-free issue, for example, can also appear in a severity category. The advisory’s entries cover application updating, networking, sandboxing, graphics, JavaScript, the DOM, XML and layout, among other components. The 77 figure is therefore not 77 identical threats, but the total reported set across Firefox 158’s fixes.
Should you update immediately?
Yes, unless an administrator manages your browser deployment and needs to validate the release first. The number and variety of fixes—including memory-safety bugs and issues described as capable of escaping the sandbox—make this a security update rather than a cosmetic upgrade.

- Use Firefox’s built-in update process or Mozilla’s official Release-channel download.
- Restart Firefox when prompted so the patched binaries are loaded.
- After restarting, verify that the browser reports version 158.0 in its About dialog.
- If Smart Window is missing, check again later; Mozilla’s progressive rollout can delay availability independently of the security update.
Organizations that pin browser versions should test extensions and managed policies, but should not confuse a delayed feature rollout with a reason to postpone the security fixes.

PCWorld reports Firefox 158 for Windows, macOS, Linux and Android. Mozilla’s release page also provides download links for Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS, and directs users on unsupported older operating systems toward the Extended Support Release (ESR) channel.

ESR users should install the version offered for their branch rather than switching branches solely to obtain Smart Window. The 115 line is specifically relevant to legacy operating-system users, while feature availability can differ from the regular Release channel.

For a practical comparison, check six points: whether Smart Window has reached the device; the browser’s 77-fix security coverage; PDF accessibility and rendering behavior; JPEG XL support; the smoother-scrolling and interface changes; and compatibility with the device’s operating system or ESR branch. A machine can receive the security fixes even when the progressive Smart Window rollout has not reached it.
