Data Centre Dynamics’ DCD Studio episode published on October 14, 2026 examines how manufactured, modular power systems are changing the way data centers receive electrical infrastructure. Interviewer Seb Moss speaks with Michael Beagan of TES Power about switchgear, power distribution, supply-chain management and the growing use of plug-and-play designs. The episode is a professional infrastructure discussion, not a consumer equipment review, and it does not publish cost, reliability or deployment-time figures.

What the DCD Studio interview covers

The episode connects four parts of a data-center power project that are often managed separately: the equipment itself, factory manufacturing, logistics and on-site commissioning. Beagan appears on behalf of TES Power, while Moss conducts the interview. DCD describes the conversation as focusing on “switchgear, power distribution, supply chain management, and the growing role of modular, plug-and-play solutions in accelerating data center delivery.”

That framing matters because electrical capacity is a critical path for a new data center. Servers cannot be installed, tested or operated until incoming power has been switched, protected, distributed and commissioned. Delays in any of those stages can hold up the wider construction program.

Why switchgear and distribution are central

Switchgear

Switchgear is the collection of switching, protection and control equipment used to connect circuits and isolate faults. In a data center, it provides controlled ways to energize equipment, shut down sections for maintenance and protect the electrical system when abnormal conditions occur.

Power distribution

Power-distribution equipment carries electricity from the facility’s incoming supply through downstream systems serving data halls and support loads. The design has to coordinate capacity, protection, physical layout and interfaces with the rest of the facility. Treating distribution as a manufactured system rather than a collection of unrelated site tasks can make the project easier to sequence.

How modular, plug-and-play systems change delivery

A modular approach moves more work into a controlled manufacturing environment. Assemblies can be designed around repeatable layouts, built and wired before shipment, then connected to prepared site interfaces. “Plug-and-play” does not mean that a data center requires no engineering; it means that more of the integration is completed before the equipment reaches the site.

  • Defined interfaces: standard connection points make it easier to coordinate civil, mechanical and electrical packages.
  • Reduced site scope: fewer activities need to be performed in the data hall or electrical room.
  • Repeatability: a design that can be manufactured more than once may reduce redesign between similar facilities.
  • Commissioning preparation: factory checks can identify integration issues before shipment, although site testing and acceptance remain necessary.

The DCD page presents modular plug-and-play solutions as a way to accelerate delivery, but it does not state a universal time saving, cost reduction or reliability improvement. Results depend on the design, site readiness, approvals, shipping and the amount of customization.

Supply-chain management is part of the power system

The interview treats supply-chain management as an engineering-delivery issue rather than an administrative afterthought. Switchgear, transformers, controls and other electrical components must arrive in the right sequence and match the approved design. A late component can leave a completed module unusable, while a change in an upstream component can force redesign or requalification.

Manufacturing-based delivery therefore requires coordination across engineering, procurement, production, testing, transport and installation. Teams need visibility into component availability, manufacturing slots, inspection points and site readiness. Modularization can make the plan more repeatable, but it also makes interface control important: the factory-built package must match the building, utility connection and downstream distribution equipment.

Standard architecture versus bespoke engineering

The practical choice is not simply “traditional” versus “modular.” Projects usually combine standard elements with site-specific engineering. The following framework captures the trade-offs identified by the episode’s subject areas; the source provides no numeric benchmark for any row.

Decision area Conventional or highly bespoke approach Modular or plug-and-play approach
Architecture More equipment and connections are configured specifically for one site. Repeatable modules and defined interfaces are used where the project allows.
Engineering Greater site-by-site design and coordination. More reusable engineering, with customization retained for local requirements.
Supply chain Procurement and installation may be tightly tied to site progress. Factory production and logistics become a coordinated workstream.
Integration More assembly and testing occur on site. More assembly and checks occur before shipment, followed by site commissioning.
Deployment speed Schedule depends heavily on site labor and sequential construction. Parallel factory and site work may shorten the overall path when interfaces are ready.
Published metrics Not stated in the reviewed episode page. No time, cost or reliability benchmark is stated in the reviewed episode page.

What adjacent equipment categories show

The discussion sits within a broader market for manufactured electrical infrastructure. BMC publicly describes power-distribution cabinets, low-voltage switchgear, integrated systems and prefabricated electrical infrastructure. Spang Power publicly describes AC/DC power systems, custom transformers, SCR controllers and other industrial power equipment. These categories illustrate the range of hardware that may be coordinated in an engineered power package, but the DCD episode does not compare those companies or assign them performance rankings.

What the episode does—and does not—establish

DCD Studio presents manufacturing, modular construction and supply-chain control as connected levers for improving data-center power delivery. It does not publish a quoted statistic from Beagan, a project case study with measured results, a price, a reliability figure or a guaranteed schedule reduction. Readers should therefore treat the episode as an expert infrastructure discussion and a framework for evaluating delivery approaches, not as a quantified product comparison.

ZHANGONG 1U Rack Mount PDU Power Strip 9 Outlet Individual Switch
  • 【Heavy-Duty 9 Outlet PDU】 Designed for standard 19" server racks, this 1U rack mount power strip provides 9 US standard outlets (15A/125V/1875W), ideal for data centers, network cabinets, and audio-visual setups needing reliable power distribution.
  • 【Individual Switch Control】 Each outlet is equipped with its own illuminated on/off switch, so you can manage connected devices individually instead of unplugging them. The switch modules are fully independent: if one outlet trips, only that outlet shuts down while all remaining outlets keep running normally — no whole-strip shutdown, no interruption to your other equipment. A tripped switch also tells you exactly which device has reached its load limit, giving you faster, more sensitive overload protection and a clear visual cue for troubleshooting.
  • 【Overload Protection & Power Monitoring】 Equipped with overload protection and a digital power monitoring display, this PDU safeguards your equipment from overloads while providing real-time voltage and current data for secure operation. The switch will automatically trip if the current exceeds 15A. Simply having wires or cables touch the switch will not cause it to trip — the switch only responds to an overload condition.
  • 【Durable Metal Construction】 Built with a sturdy metal housing and a 14AWG heavy-duty 6.5FT power cord, ensuring durability and stable performance even in high-demand environments like professional server rooms and industrial settings.
  • 【Versatile Installation】 Ideal for studios, labs, and data centers, ensuring peak performance and reliability. Designed for 1U rackmount for hassle-free cable management. Supports horizontal installation in server racks with included mounting brackets.
