The Roku Streaming Stick 4K is the closest like-for-like alternative to the Fire TV Stick 4K Max because both plug into an HDMI port as a stick. Google’s current alternative is the Google TV Streamer (4K), a box—not a renamed Chromecast dongle—while Apple TV 4K is a premium box option that may suit households already using Apple devices and services. The right pick depends on your TV’s HDR support, preferred platform, networking needs, and willingness to accommodate a separate HDMI cable.
This comparison uses the Fire TV Stick 4K Max (2nd Gen, 2023) as its baseline; Amazon’s name can be confused with later Fire TV devices. Specifications below are manufacturer-published, not results of independent head-to-head testing.

Which alternative is the closest match?
Roku Streaming Stick 4K: choose a stick form factor
Roku Streaming Stick 4K (model 3820R2) is the most direct hardware alternative if you want a compact HDMI stick rather than a box. Roku lists 4K, Dolby Vision, HDR10+, long-range Wi-Fi, and a voice remote with TV power, volume, and mute controls. Roku says 4K/HDR output depends on compatible content and a compatible TV; otherwise output follows the display’s maximum resolution. See Roku’s Streaming Stick 4K product page for current regional details.

Roku’s product page also lists compatibility with Apple AirPlay/HomeKit, Google Home, and Alexa. It claims “500+ free TV channels” for The Roku Channel; that is Roku’s own product-page claim, not an independently audited channel count. The $79.99 displayed on the US page when accessed in 2026 can change and should not be treated as an evergreen price.
Google TV Streamer: choose Google’s current box
Google TV Streamer (4K) is a box-style device with Ethernet, a customizable and findable remote, 4 GB RAM, 32 GB storage, up to 4K output, Dolby Vision, and Dolby Atmos. Google’s specifications list 1 Gbps Ethernet, Wi-Fi 802.11ac, Bluetooth 5.1, HDMI 2.1, Android TV OS, Matter, and Thread Border Router functionality. Those capabilities make it the most explicitly smart-home-oriented option in this comparison, though they are not necessary to stream video.

Google lists the Streamer separately from Chromecast with Google TV. The older 4K Chromecast is a dongle with 2 GB RAM, 8 GB storage, Wi-Fi 802.11ac, and Dolby Vision; Google also lists an HD Chromecast separately. So if you specifically want Google hardware, compare the box’s added Ethernet, storage, memory, remote functions, and smart-home features against the older dongle rather than assuming the products are the same device. Google’s comparison says the Streamer CPU is 22% faster than Chromecast with Google TV (4K); this is Google’s comparison, not an independent benchmark. See Google’s Google TV Streamer overview and Google’s Chromecast and Google TV Streamer specifications.
Apple TV 4K: choose an Apple-oriented box
Apple TV 4K is a box with an A15 Bionic chip, HDMI 2.1, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.0, and video output up to 2160p/60, according to Apple’s specifications. Apple lists Dolby Vision, HDR10+, HDR10, and HLG, along with Dolby Atmos audio. This is a premium configuration choice for people who value fit with Apple’s platform; the specifications alone do not establish that it is faster or easier to use than the other devices.

Apple sells a 64 GB Wi-Fi configuration and a 128 GB Wi-Fi + Ethernet configuration. The larger configuration adds Gigabit Ethernet and Thread. Apple says an HDMI cable is required and sold separately. Check the exact configuration and local price when comparing it with a stick or Google’s box. See Apple TV 4K technical specifications.
How the Fire TV Stick 4K Max baseline compares
Amazon identifies the Fire TV Stick 4K Max (2nd Gen) as a 2023 model. Its listed hardware includes a 2.0 GHz quad-core CPU, 2 GB LPDDR4 RAM, 16 GB storage, and Wi-Fi 6E across 2.4, 5.0, and 6 GHz bands. Amazon lists 4K decoding, Dolby Vision, HDR10, HDR10+, HLG, Dolby Atmos, Ambient Experience support, and an Alexa Voice Remote Enhanced. These are published specifications and features, not evidence of relative real-world speed or reliability. Amazon’s device reference is at Fire TV streaming media player specifications.

What to check before choosing
Match HDR and audio to the equipment you own
Check the formats supported by your TV, the streaming services and titles you use, and any connected receiver or soundbar. Dolby Vision and HDR10+ are distinct HDR formats; a device supporting one does not ensure that your TV or chosen content supports it. Dolby Atmos support likewise depends on the rest of the audio chain and the content. A feature list is most useful when it matches equipment you already have.
Decide whether you want a stick or a box
The Roku and Fire TV models are HDMI sticks; Google TV Streamer and Apple TV 4K are boxes. A stick is a compact option that connects directly to HDMI. A box takes more space near the TV but may be preferable if you want its wired-network connection or other listed features. Form factor alone does not establish signal quality or performance.
Best Value
- Ultra-speedy streaming: Roku Ultra is 30% faster than any other Roku player, delivering a lightning-fast interface and apps that launch in a snap.
- Cinematic streaming: This TV streaming device brings the movie theater to your living room with spectacular 4K, HDR10+, and Dolby Vision picture alongside immersive Dolby Atmos audio.
- The ultimate Roku remote: The rechargeable Roku Voice Remote Pro offers backlit buttons, hands-free voice controls, and a lost remote finder.
- No more fumbling in the dark: See what you’re pressing with backlit buttons.
- Say goodbye to batteries: Keep your remote powered for months on a single charge.
Consider wired networking, storage, and platform features
Google TV Streamer includes Ethernet and 32 GB storage; the Fire TV baseline lists Wi-Fi 6E and 16 GB storage. Apple’s 128 GB model includes Gigabit Ethernet, while its 64 GB model is Wi-Fi-only. Roku’s cited page does not state storage capacity. These published capacities and networking options help describe the configurations, but do not by themselves predict how quickly apps will open or how reliably a device will stream in your home.
Platform and smart-home fit may matter more than a spec-sheet difference: Roku lists AirPlay/HomeKit and Alexa/Google Home compatibility; Google lists Matter hub and Thread border-router features; and Apple offers a Wi-Fi + Ethernet model with Thread. Treat these as compatibility features, not a requirement to buy additional smart-home products.
Account for the HDMI cable and TV ports
Google says an HDMI 2.1 Ultra High Speed cable is needed for optimal performance with Google TV Streamer and sells it separately. Apple lists an HDMI cable as required and sold separately. Confirm your TV has an available HDMI port and choose a cable appropriate to the device and setup; a device’s maximum supported output cannot make an older TV display formats it does not support.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhich streaming device should you buy?
- Choose Roku Streaming Stick 4K if you want the closest stick-shaped alternative and its listed Dolby Vision/HDR10+ support and remote controls suit your setup.
- Choose Google TV Streamer (4K) if you prefer Google’s current box and want built-in Ethernet, more listed storage, or its Google Home/Matter and Thread features.
- Choose Apple TV 4K if Apple platform fit and the available storage/network configuration matter more to you than stick form factor.
- Keep the Fire TV Stick 4K Max (2nd Gen, 2023) in the comparison if you value its documented Wi-Fi 6E, 16 GB storage, Ambient Experience support, and Alexa remote.
There is no universal winner established by these manufacturer specifications. Compare the exact model, your TV and audio formats, wired or wireless networking, remote and platform features, cable needs, and current local prices before deciding.
