If the Fire TV menus still appear but apps will not open, troubleshoot the affected app before considering a factory reset. A black screen by itself does not prove an update caused the problem.
First identify what is black
A Fire TV Stick or other streaming device connects to a separate television through HDMI and uses an external power cable. A Fire TV Smart TV is the television itself, with its own physical power button. Their restart and recovery procedures differ, so identify which one you have before trying reset steps.

- The TV says “No signal” or shows a blank HDMI input: Start with the television’s input and the HDMI connection.
- The Fire TV logo or menus appear, then freeze: Restart the streaming device or television before trying a reset.
- The home screen works but one app does not: Treat it as an app-specific problem.
- Menus work but all apps fail: Check the connection and system software, then restart.
The symptom alone does not identify whether the cause is power, HDMI, network, software, or an app issue.

Check input, HDMI, and power
- Confirm the television is on and set to the correct input. For a Fire TV Stick, select the HDMI port it is plugged into.
- Remove any HDMI hub or switch for a test. Connect the Stick directly to the TV. Amazon’s Fire TV streaming-device troubleshooting recommends checking the input and direct HDMI connection.
- Check the Stick’s power connection. Use the supplied power cable and adapter. Amazon advises replacing lost Fire TV power equipment with Amazon-branded equipment for compatibility; that does not mean a different adapter will necessarily fix a black screen. For Fire TV Stick 4K Select, Amazon says to use the adapter rather than connect the USB cable directly to the TV. Follow the setup guidance for your specific model.
Restart the right kind of Fire TV
Fire TV Stick or other streaming device
If the device is frozen, hold Select and Play/Pause together for about five seconds, or disconnect its power for 60 seconds and reconnect it. These are Amazon’s documented restart options for a frozen Fire TV streaming device.

Fire TV Smart TV
Hold Play/Pause and Select on the remote for 3–5 seconds, or unplug the TV for at least 30 seconds and plug it back in. Amazon notes that the TV turns off and back on while restarting. Do not use the Smart TV’s physical-button recovery procedure on a Stick.
If the Fire TV menus still work
On a Fire TV Smart TV, check for a system update at Settings > My Fire TV or Device & Software > About > Check for System Update. To restart from the menu, use Settings > My Fire TV or Device & Software > Restart. Names can vary by model. If your menus are inaccessible, use the restart method for your device type instead.

Fix an app that will not open
If the home screen works and the problem is limited to one app, test another app to confirm the failure is isolated. Then:
- Restart Fire TV using the appropriate method above.
- Check the Amazon Appstore for an update to the affected app; an update option appears when one is available.
- In the device’s installed-app settings, clear that app’s cache. If the issue persists, clear its data as well. Clearing data may remove app-specific local settings or require you to sign in again.
Amazon’s support guidance for Silk includes clearing app data or cache and restarting. These app-level steps are more targeted than resetting the entire Fire TV.

When to consider a factory reset
Use a factory reset only after input, power, restart, system-update, and relevant app-level checks have failed. It erases the device configuration and returns Fire TV to setup. Amazon documents in-menu and remote-shortcut reset options for Fire TV Smart TVs, plus a recovery-mode procedure using the TV’s physical power button if the remote shortcut cannot be used. Verify the instructions for your exact model on Amazon’s Fire TV Smart TV reset and recovery support page before proceeding; do not apply that TV recovery sequence to every Fire TV Stick.

If there is no picture during startup, or the device does not respond after the power and connection checks, follow the official support path for the exact model. A black screen alone is not enough to diagnose hardware failure or confirm that an update caused the problem.
