Backend engineers can lower AWS costs by finding idle capacity, matching resources to real demand, and choosing pricing commitments only after usage is predictable. A 40% reduction in an organization’s total AWS bill is not established as a typical result: AWS’s “up to 40%” Graviton claim refers to price performance versus comparable x86 processors, not total cloud spend. Actual savings depend on workload, region, architecture, utilization, pricing, and the performance and reliability requirements you must preserve.
What FinOps means for a backend team
AWS frames cost optimization as running systems to deliver business value at the lowest price point. That is different from minimizing the bill at any cost: a cheaper configuration is not an improvement if it violates latency, availability, throughput, or other workload requirements. The AWS Well-Architected Framework also recommends measuring workload business output alongside the cost of delivering it.

For a backend service, useful units might include cost per request, per successful transaction, or per completed job. These are examples to choose from, not a universal AWS-prescribed metric. Select an output measure that reflects what the service actually delivers, and interpret it alongside performance and reliability indicators.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteMake costs visible and owned
Start by attributing spending to workloads and the teams or owners responsible for them. AWS recommends an owner or a cross-functional team spanning finance, technology, and business. Without that ownership, a cost change can be hard to connect to a service, a decision, or an outcome.

How to find idle and overprovisioned AWS resources
Look first for resources that are running without useful work, then for resources sized beyond observed demand. AWS identifies Cost Explorer rightsizing recommendations, AWS Trusted Advisor, and AWS Compute Optimizer as tools that can help surface opportunities. Treat a recommendation as a prompt to investigate, not an instruction to change production configuration automatically.
Check whether resources are needed when they run
Compare operating hours with actual demand. AWS gives an illustrative development-and-test example: stopping resources outside a 40-hour work week rather than running them for all 168 hours offers potential savings of 75%. That is an arithmetic example from AWS, not a guaranteed customer result. It applies only where the resources can safely be stopped during unused hours; production dependencies, scheduled jobs, and data or state handling may make a simple shutdown unsuitable.

Validate rightsizing recommendations against workload behavior
Before reducing capacity, examine actual utilization over a period that includes representative busy and quiet conditions. Check memory as well as CPU where relevant, and account for traffic spikes, background work, failover capacity, and latency objectives. A recommendation based on incomplete metrics or an unrepresentative interval can understate what the service needs.

Which AWS cost action should you try first?
These options work on different parts of the cost equation. Rightsizing and scaling change how much capacity you consume; Savings Plans and Reserved Instances change the price under a commitment; moving to Graviton changes processor architecture. They are not interchangeable, and a lower unit price does not by itself prove a workload’s total cost has fallen.
| Option | What changes | Best fit to investigate | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rightsizing | Resource configuration and capacity consumed | Workloads with evidence of sustained spare capacity | Undersizing can harm performance or reliability; validate against representative demand |
| Scaling with demand | How much capacity runs as workload demand changes | Workloads with meaningful periods of lower demand and safe scaling behavior | Requires engineering and operational validation; fixed or stateful dependencies may constrain scaling |
| Savings Plans or Reserved Instances | Pricing for eligible usage under a commitment | Usage that is sufficiently understood to evaluate a commitment | Commitment duration and usage variability affect the risk of paying for unused commitment |
| Graviton migration | Processor architecture, from x86 to ARM64 for the migration described by AWS | Workloads whose dependencies and runtime support can be validated on the target architecture | Requires compatibility evaluation and testing; price-performance claims do not establish total-bill savings |
Rightsize and scale before committing to a discount
Reducing unused capacity clarifies the workload’s actual consumption and can make its cost baseline easier to understand. Scaling can further match running capacity to demand where the service architecture supports it. Assess the operational effort and effects on latency, resilience, and performance before treating either as a cost-only change.

Savings Plans and Reserved Instances address the price paid for usage through commitments rather than eliminating the underlying resource use. Consider them only after you understand which usage is stable enough to evaluate, and weigh commitment duration against the possibility that the workload changes. The available AWS guidance does not establish a universal commitment level or payback for an unspecified backend workload.

AWS states that Graviton-powered instances can provide “up to 40% better price performance” than comparable x86-based processors. This is an AWS processor-level comparison, not a promise of a 40% reduction in an account’s total AWS bill. How much a particular service benefits depends on its workload and the rest of its cost profile.

AWS describes Graviton as a CPU architecture shift from x86 to ARM64, unlike same-architecture rightsizing, which it characterizes as a configuration change. Review runtime and dependency compatibility, then test the workload and compare cost alongside performance and reliability before expanding a migration. Do not assume a processor change is safe merely because an instance appears cheaper.

Cost optimization is recurring engineering work, not a one-time cleanup. AWS describes ongoing practices that include monitoring use and costs, rightsizing, eliminating waste, and enabling workload owners to make informed decisions.
- Assign owners: Make each material workload’s team accountable for reviewing its usage and costs.
- Monitor cost and demand: Use AWS cost and recommendation tools where suitable, and pair cost data with workload output and service health.
- Choose one change at a time: Record whether the change reduces consumption, changes the unit price, or changes architecture so the result can be interpreted.
- Verify the outcome: Compare cost per chosen unit of output and check performance and reliability against the workload’s requirements.
- Revisit assumptions: Repeat the review as demand, architecture, and usage patterns change.
AWS’s June 2026 report analyzed more than 71,000 anonymized, opted-in AWS customers over the most recent quarter described in the post. AWS reported a median Cost Efficiency score of 83 and a mean of 79 as of May 2026; the score is a daily 0–100% measure of the portion of optimizable spend already well optimized. The report also associated enabling EC2 memory metrics with 8 to 30 percentage points higher savings per recommendation. These are AWS-reported findings, not a forecast for an individual account or proof that enabling metrics causes a particular saving.
In the same post, AWS reported that larger customers combining Savings Plans with rightsizing ran about 60% more EC2 instances on newer hardware and improved median Cost Efficiency score four times faster than customers using Savings Plans alone. This comparison describes AWS’s reported customer analysis for the most recent quarter discussed in its June 2026 post; it does not establish an outcome that an individual team should expect.
