But the specific claim that an Amazon executive called FDE candidates “unicorns” is not verified by the sources available here: no speaker or originating transcript has been identified. Amazon does have a live senior FDE management listing, but it does not substantiate that quotation.
What is verified about the Amazon claim?
The headline’s wording attributes a specific remark to an Amazon executive. The reviewed material does not corroborate the quote “These are unicorns” or identify who supposedly said it. It should therefore not be repeated as a verified Amazon statement.

There are two separate, documented Amazon connections. Kanav Bhatnagar worked as a software engineer at Amazon before moving into forward-deployed roles; the practitioner account describes him later as a senior FDE at Rippling. Separately, Amazon’s careers site lists a Senior Manager, Forward Deployed Engineering role in AWS Forward Deployed Engineering for U.S. Government. Neither fact establishes that an Amazon executive made the headline’s remark. Business Insider’s account and Amazon’s listing describe those distinct connections.
Why FDEs can be hard to hire
The work asks engineers to move between implementation and customer-facing problem solving. Bhatnagar described his role as tailoring a company’s product to each client: customers explain their needs, and he builds solutions or customizations. In one example, custom code and AI reduced manual payroll-data work for a restaurant chain. His time was divided among customer meetings, coding, and coordination with core product teams. This is one practitioner’s account, not a universal job description.

That mix can make the role demanding to staff. A candidate may need to understand a customer’s business problem, communicate with technical and nontechnical stakeholders, and turn the problem into working software. Bhatnagar also emphasized context switching: the day can jump from a customer conversation to debugging and then to another call. Those are his observations, not a formal industry-wide skills standard.
FDE jobs vary by employer and seniority
“Forward-deployed engineer” does not describe one fixed balance of product work, customer customization, and sales support. A 2026 interview with Bhatnagar contrasts AI-native companies, where FDEs may focus on building the AI product and running pre-sales pilots, with established SaaS companies, where they may write customer-specific code on top of a mature platform. His interview with Business Insider discusses these different patterns.

| Role or setting | Work emphasis described in the sources | What the comparison means |
|---|---|---|
| FDE at an AI-native company | Building the AI product and supporting pre-sales pilots | The role may help shape the product as well as demonstrate it to prospective customers. |
| FDE at an established SaaS company | Customer-specific code built on a mature platform | The work may center on adapting existing product capabilities to a client’s needs. |
| Amazon Senior Manager, AWS Forward Deployed Engineering for U.S. Government | Coordinating multiple FDE pods and customer programs; setting engineering and delivery standards; hiring and developing staff; creating a talent pipeline | This is an organizational leadership role, not a template for an individual-contributor FDE position. |
Amazon’s captured U.S. government posting is specifically for senior management. It requires U.S. citizenship and an active TS/SCI clearance with polygraph. The listing showed an application deadline of October 6, 2026. Its stated base salary ranges are $220,100–$297,700 for Denver, Arlington, and Seattle, and $242,100–$327,500 for New York. These conditions and figures apply to that posting and may change; they should not be generalized to other FDE jobs. See the Amazon job listing.
What the 2026 talent estimates do—and do not—show
TechCrunch reported estimates from executive search firm Christian & Timbers that suggest rising interest in FDE hiring, but they are private-firm estimates and projections, not official labor statistics or Amazon-specific hiring data. The firm’s study was based on interviews with more than 250 C-suite hiring executives at 180 companies, a survey of 80 Fortune 500 executives, and interviews with more than 300 FDEs and applied-AI engineers from January through June 2026.

| Reported figure | What it refers to | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| About 2,000 U.S. engineers | People the firm estimated had a specific combination of sector knowledge, executive credibility, and applied-AI experience that it believed could reliably produce enterprise returns | A narrow profile defined by the firm, not a count of all FDEs. |
| Roughly 17,000 U.S. FDEs | The firm’s estimate of the broader population of people classified as FDEs | Not directly comparable with the narrower 2,000-person profile. |
| 2,100% increase in FDE demand by year-end 2026 | The firm’s projection for demand | A forecast, not a measured outcome. |
| 5%–10% at the start of 2026, rising to 70% by the end of Q2 | The share of companies the study said planned to hire FDEs | Reported study findings; the percentages describe hiring plans, not completed hires. |
TechCrunch’s report quotes Christian & Timbers founder Jeff Christian saying, “This is all happening at a speed I’ve never seen. Enterprises are hiring in the middle of summer.” The report also quotes Ode with Anthropic CEO Chris Taylor drawing a distinction between deploying Claude Code across a workforce and building a flagship AI product feature. Together, those comments underscore that FDE labels can cover different work: deployment support does not automatically mean product-building expertise. TechCrunch’s coverage contains the study figures and quotations.
How candidates can prepare for FDE interviews
Bhatnagar said that, in his experience, interviews tested coding alongside the ability to speak with technical and nontechnical customers, ask questions that uncover the real problem, and explain a solution design. He prepared with consulting-style interview questions. Employers may differ, so treat this as one practitioner’s account rather than a standard hiring rubric.

- Show how you discover the problem: explain the questions you would ask before proposing a technical solution.
- Demonstrate implementation judgment: connect a customer need to a workable design and discuss how you would build or adapt it.
- Practice clear explanations: describe the same solution in terms a technical teammate and a nontechnical customer can both follow.
- Prepare for context switching: be ready to discuss how you handle changing priorities across customer conversations, coding, and debugging.
How to scope an FDE pilot around a real outcome
Bhatnagar advises that a pilot should be tied to a measurable business outcome. Rather than demonstrate a broad collection of capabilities, define a narrow workflow that can be delivered end to end and evaluated against a business result. This makes it easier for a customer to judge whether the solution works and whether it is worth expanding.
