Online parts catalogs can cut a breakdown’s downtime, but only when you start with precise machine information. For tractors, combines, planters and other farm equipment, the safest path is to identify the exact model and serial-number range, verify the part in a diagram, compare OEM and aftermarket options, and confirm delivered cost and arrival date before paying.
Why online ordering matters during a breakdown
The benefit is not the click itself. It is avoiding a drive to a dealer, repeated phone calls, and hours waiting for someone to locate a component while a machine sits idle. Delivery to the farm can also remove dependence on another person’s schedule. Agriculture.com reported this shift in its March 12, 2024 article, including an estimate from Abilene Machine that online sales grew from about 4% before 2020 to roughly 30% at the time of the interview. That is a company estimate, not a current industry statistic. Read the original report.
Online lookup does transfer some identification work to the buyer. A vague search for “tractor belt” can return several parts that look alike but differ by serial break, length, pulley profile or application.
Collect this information before searching
- Manufacturer and machine type.
- Exact model and serial number, plus model year when relevant.
- Component location, system and optional attachments or equipment packages.
- Existing part number, label or casting mark.
- Clear photographs of the part, mounting points, connectors and identification tags.
- Measurements when no number is readable: length, diameter, hole spacing, thread, spline or connector details.
- Symptoms and diagnostic findings, not just the part you suspect failed.
- Quantity required and any delivery deadline.
The serial number often matters more than the model name. Manufacturers can change a component during a production run, so two machines carrying the same model designation may not share the same part.

The safest online search sequence
- Start with the exact part number. Search the number from the old component, if it is legible, including letters and suffixes.
- Enter the machine identity. Use the make, model and serial-number range in the manufacturer portal or dealer catalog.
- Open the illustrated parts diagram. Navigate to the relevant assembly rather than relying only on a descriptive keyword.
- Match the diagram item. Record the callout number and the manufacturer’s part number.
- Check supersession. Determine whether the old number was replaced, and whether the new number needs additional hardware or is a direct substitute.
- Compare sources. Check an OEM listing, an authorized dealer and reputable aftermarket or salvage suppliers.
- Verify the listing. Confirm fit, quantity, orientation, specifications, stock status, shipping date, core charge and return restrictions.
- Save the documentation. Keep the confirmation, diagram, part numbers, tracking details and any fit correspondence.
Where to look for farm equipment parts
Manufacturer portals
Brand portals are the best starting point for official diagrams, current part numbers and revision information. Examples include John Deere Shop, MyCNHStore for Case IH and New Holland, and AGCO Parts. Functions vary by brand, region, dealer setup and item; a portal may identify a part without selling every item directly to you.
Authorized dealers
A dealer can check local inventory, arrange pickup, resolve serial-number breaks and involve a service department when the diagram is unclear. Campbell Tractor’s parts page illustrates a dealer model that supports model or part-number lookup, portal ordering, shipping and dealership pickup: campbelltractor.com/Parts. Treat that feature set as an example, not a universal policy.
Aftermarket agricultural suppliers
Sloan Express organizes parts by equipment and component categories such as tractors, combines, planters, hay, sprayers, tillage, hydraulic, electrical and drivetrain systems. Its site displayed free small-package shipping above $259 on August 18, 2026; check current exclusions and destination terms before relying on that promotion.

| Option | Strengths | Risks and best use |
|---|---|---|
| OEM | Designed for the stated application; official traceability, diagrams and dealer support. | Often costs more, may be dealer-dependent or discontinued. Prefer it for safety-critical, hydraulic, electronic, calibrated or warranty-sensitive components. |
| Reputable aftermarket | Potentially lower cost, broader older-machine coverage and more supplier choice. | Quality, dimensions, materials, ratings, warranty and returns vary. Use when specifications are clear and the supplier is credible. |
| Salvage or used | Can restore obsolete, noncritical assemblies and body components. | Condition and remaining life may be uncertain; inspect before installation and confirm return terms. |
| Repair or fabrication | Useful for noncritical parts when you have suitable machining, welding or engineering capability. | Not appropriate where a failure could affect steering, braking, lifting, PTO, high pressure or high voltage. |
Abilene Machine’s representative told Agriculture.com that non-OEM parts could cost 30% to 60% less. That is an attributed estimate, not a universal saving or a guarantee for your part.
Verify fit before checkout
- Exact model and serial-number range.
- Part-number revision and any superseded number.
- Option package, attachment and left/right or front/rear orientation.
- Dimensions, mounting-hole pattern, belt or chain size, bearing or seal dimensions and shaft details.
- Hydraulic pressure, flow, fitting and thread specifications.
- Electrical connector, voltage, amperage and sensor compatibility.
- Whether the listing is for one item, a kit or a complete assembly.
A “fits your machine” badge is useful evidence, not a replacement for checking the serial range and diagram. A cross-reference also does not prove equal material, hardness, sealing, tolerance or electrical rating.

Compare the delivered cost, not the headline price
Before ordering, add the part price, shipping, tax, oversize or hazardous-material charges, core charge, return shipping and any restocking fee. Include fuel or pickup costs if a dealer is closer. A starter, alternator, pump or injector may require a refundable core, making the card authorization higher than the advertised part price.
Also price the risk of delay. A part that is $50 cheaper but arrives three days later can cost more during planting or harvest, and a failed low-cost replacement can repeat the downtime.

What delivery promises really mean
Interviewees in the 2024 Agriculture.com report described next-day or two-day delivery when regional carriers were available, along with tracking and out-for-delivery alerts. Those were reported experiences, not guaranteed service levels.

- Heat-treated boron steel
- Local dealer stock: may allow same-day pickup.
- Regional warehouse stock: can be faster than a factory order.
- Supplier-dispatched: depends on order cutoff, carrier and destination.
- Backordered or made-to-order: has no dependable click-to-delivery assumption.
- Oversized parts: may require freight, a lift gate, a commercial address or an appointment.
- Rural delivery: may have fewer carrier options and a longer final mile.
At checkout, distinguish an estimated date from a guaranteed service level and check whether an “available” item is physically in stock, located at a remote warehouse or merely orderable from the manufacturer.
When online self-service should stop
Call a dealer or qualified mechanic when the serial number is missing, the machine has several configurations, the diagram is ambiguous, or a part number has been superseded repeatedly. Get human help when the symptom could have multiple causes, or when installation requires calibration, programming, special tools or a software update.
Use the same caution for steering, braking, lifting, hydraulic, PTO and high-voltage systems. Send the parts counter the model, serial number, photos, old number, component name, symptoms and the date the machine must be running. That information lets a specialist verify the order instead of guessing from a short description.
