If Windows 11 24H2 shows about 8.63 GB under Windows Update Cleanup and the figure returns after cleanup, you may not actually be missing 8.63 GB. Microsoft documented a Disk Cleanup reporting problem in the 24H2 client edition. Update Windows first, then compare your drive’s real free space before attempting advanced cache repairs.
What the 8.63 GB Windows Update Cleanup entry means
The usual pattern is straightforward: 24H2 is installed, Disk Cleanup reports approximately 8.63 GB for Windows Update Cleanup, you delete it, and a later scan shows the same amount again. Settings may show a related update or temporary-files figure.
Microsoft described this as an incorrect Disk Cleanup estimate. The displayed amount could include space that had already been freed, so it was not proof of a single 8.63 GB folder or of permanently undeletable files. The issue affected Windows 11 version 24H2 client systems and was marked mitigated in Microsoft’s release-health documentation: Windows 11 24H2 release health.
Improvements were included in the October 24, 2024 preview update, KB5044384, and later updates: KB5044384 support page. That package is historical; current PCs should install the latest applicable update offered for their build.

Verify whether the space is really occupied
- Open File Explorer > This PC and record the available space on the system drive, normally
C:. - Search for Disk Cleanup, right-click it, and choose Run as administrator.
- Select the Windows system drive, check Windows Update Cleanup, then choose OK > Delete Files.
- Restart the PC.
- Check the free-space figure on
C:again and compare the actual change, rather than relying on the number in the cleanup dialog.
If free space increases but Disk Cleanup still reports 8.63 GB, the remaining figure is consistent with the known 24H2 reporting error. If free space does not increase and Windows Update is also failing, treat it as a genuine servicing or cache problem instead of just a stale label.
Install every available Windows update first
- Open Start > Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install every offered quality, cumulative, and servicing update.
- Restart when Windows requests it.
- After the restart, check for updates again and repeat until Windows says the device is up to date.
- Run Disk Cleanup again only after that update cycle is complete.
Depending on edition, eligibility, management status, and Microsoft’s rollout policy, a 24H2 device may also be offered a newer feature release such as Windows 11 25H2. Do not manually hunt for the old KB5044384 preview package when Windows Update offers a newer applicable update.

Storage Sense and Cleanup recommendations

- Turn on Storage Sense.
- Open Cleanup recommendations.
- Review each category and select Clean up only for items you recognize.
Microsoft says feature updates typically need 6–11 GB or more of free space, while quality updates typically need 2–3 GB or more. Extra temporary space can be required for downloaded update content, optional features, language packs, and the rollback window, which is typically about 10 days. Requirements vary with the device’s servicing state: Free up space for Windows updates.
Delivery Optimization Files
Delivery Optimization caches update and Microsoft Store downloads and normally clears its cache automatically. To remove it manually, open Disk Cleanup, select the Disk Cleanup tab, check Delivery Optimization Files, choose OK, and confirm Delete Files. This can recover genuine cache space but is not a guaranteed cure for a false 8.63 GB estimate: Delivery Optimization in Windows.

Do not confuse Windows Update Cleanup with Windows.old
Previous Windows installation(s), often represented by the Windows.old folder, is separate from Windows Update Cleanup. Removing it removes the easy rollback path to the previous Windows version. Delete it only when you are sure you will not need that rollback.
Reset the Windows Update cache only when updating is broken
A cache reset is appropriate when updates repeatedly fail, downloads remain stuck, the same update keeps downloading, corruption errors appear, or an error such as 0x8007000d is reported. It is unnecessary merely because a stale cleanup number remains.

What not to delete
- Do not manually delete files inside
WinSxS, servicing directories, or the protected component store. - Do not remove random folders simply because a third-party cleaner identifies them as large.
- Avoid registry cleaners, “PC optimizer” utilities, and tools that force-delete Windows update components.
- On a work or school PC, do not change update policies or remove managed caches without consulting IT; WSUS, Intune, and Delivery Optimization policies may control the device.
Use the symptom to choose the remedy
| Symptom | Likely explanation | Best action |
|---|---|---|
| 8.63 GB remains, but free space increased | Stale 24H2 cleanup estimate | Install current updates and rely on the actual free-space total |
| Windows Update repeatedly fails or stalls | Corrupt cache or servicing components | Run the troubleshooter, DISM, then reset the cache if needed |
| The drive is genuinely full | Real storage consumption | Use Storage Sense, Cleanup recommendations, Disk Cleanup, and remove personal files or unused apps |
Windows.old is large |
Rollback files from a previous Windows installation | Remove only after the rollback period is no longer needed |
| Cleanup produces permission or servicing errors | System or filesystem problem | Run cleanup as administrator and follow Windows Update troubleshooting |
When the 8.63 GB label is not the real problem
A large drive usage total can come from Windows.old, update downloads, optional features, language packs, reserved servicing space, or ordinary personal files. Disk Cleanup and Settings also use different reporting paths, so their figures may not match. Investigate the specific storage category shown by Windows, but never infer that the largest visible folder is safe to delete.
