Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteTo find out whether you’re overpaying for home internet, compare your latest bill with the plan’s broadband label and the services available at your exact address. The useful shortcut is to match what you actually pay—not just the advertised monthly rate—to the speed, terms, fees, and alternatives your household can use.
1. Separate your internet cost from the rest of the bill
Start with your most recent bill. Identify the recurring internet charge, then separate one-time charges, taxes, fees, and any bundled services. If the bill includes phone or television service, note whether your household uses those services and whether removing them would change the internet price.

- Record the recurring internet charge and any equipment or service charges.
- Mark one-time charges separately so they do not inflate your estimate of the ongoing cost.
- Note discounts and bundled services, including any conditions attached to them.
A bill shows what your account is being charged; it does not necessarily explain the plan’s standard price or what happens when a promotion ends.
2. Check the broadband label and your account terms
Find the current broadband label for your plan through the provider’s website, online account, or sales materials. FCC broadband labels are designed to help consumers compare plans and disclose items such as price, introductory rates, data allowances, performance metrics, and contract information. See the FCC’s broadband-label rulemaking.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
Compare the label with your bill, and check:
- Price now and later: Identify the introductory price, how long it lasts, and the price after it expires.
- Discounts: Check whether the label’s retail price differs from your bill because of discounts such as autopay or paperless billing, and confirm eligibility and conditions for your account.
- Fees: Review the label and bill for applicable charges. Some variable fees may be presented in simplified form under the FCC’s 2026 amendments, so ask the provider which fees apply at your location and to your account.
- Service and commitment: Check performance details, data allowances, contract length, and any disclosed switching costs.
The label’s retail price can be the price before discounts, so a difference from your current bill is not automatically an error. The FCC’s 2022 order describes that distinction, including discounts such as autopay and paperless billing. Confirm variable fees and discounts with the provider rather than assuming they apply uniformly.
Presentation rules have changed. A provider may use more conversational verbal disclosures in a phone sale, simplified variable-fee disclosures in some cases, or a hyperlink or icon in certain sales or account settings. Do not assume every provider must display a full label in the same way at every interaction; look for the plan’s current information and ask for details that affect your account.

3. See what providers report for your address
Use the FCC National Broadband Map and search your exact service address. Note the providers shown, their reported technologies, and their maximum advertised speeds. Address matters: a plan available elsewhere in town may not be available at your home.
The map relies on information reported by internet service providers. It is a useful shortlist, not a guarantee that a provider can install service or deliver a particular experience at your home. The FCC’s map help guide, updated May 15, 2025, explains how to search and challenge inaccurate availability information. If the map appears wrong, use the FCC’s availability challenge process.

4. Compare the full cost with what your household needs
For each viable option, compare the recurring price now and after any promotion, the promotion’s duration, discount conditions, applicable fees, contract commitment, technology, advertised download and upload performance, and disclosed switching costs. Use the plan label and your bill together: the bill reflects your account charges, while the label helps explain the plan terms.
| What to compare | Question to answer |
|---|---|
| Price over time | What is the recurring charge now, and what will it be when an introductory price ends? |
| Discounts and fees | Which discounts apply to this account, what conditions do they require, and which fees apply at this address? |
| Terms | Is there a contract, and are any switching costs disclosed? |
| Service | What technology and advertised download and upload speeds are offered? |
| Household fit | Does the service meet your household’s needs, or are you paying for more speed than you use? |
| Availability | Does the provider report service at your exact address, and can it confirm installation? |
The map’s maximum advertised speed is not a household-specific performance guarantee. And a higher speed is not automatically better value if your household does not need it. Focus on the service characteristics that matter to you and the full recurring cost across the period you expect to keep the plan.

5. Challenge a charge or availability result that looks wrong
If the bill does not match the rate or terms you were given, contact the provider and keep the bill, label, and plan terms. Ask the provider to explain the charge, discount, or rate change and how it applies to your account. For an inaccurate map result, use the FCC’s challenge process described in its National Broadband Map help guide.

If a billing issue remains unresolved, the FCC’s internet complaint information covers advertised rates, service charges, taxes, fees, and surcharges, and explains how to file a complaint. It also identifies equipment and speed as internet complaint topics.
Do not count on the ended Affordable Connectivity Program
The federal Affordable Connectivity Program ended June 1, 2024, after Congress did not provide additional funding, according to the Universal Service Administrative Company. Its former benefits—up to $30 per month for eligible consumers, up to $75 on qualifying Tribal lands, and a one-time device discount of up to $100 through participating providers—are not current offers. The FCC has warned that some websites still advertise ACP benefits or collect personal information through purported enrollment. Do not provide personal information to a site claiming you can newly enroll in the ended program; see the FCC advisory on ACP scams.
