Find Firmware CVE Risks Without Source Code

A repeatable process for checking closed-source firmware against known CVEs—and for separating a candidate match from a confirmed product vulnerability.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You can check closed-source firmware for known CVEs by identifying the exact device and firmware build, requesting the vendor’s SBOM or vulnerability statement, then inspecting an available firmware image for component clues and comparing those clues with CVE records and vendor advisories. A matching version string or CVE entry is a lead—not proof that the vulnerable code is present or applicable to your device.

What you need to identify before searching

A vulnerability match is only meaningful when it refers to the right product and firmware. Record these details before you investigate:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Manufacturer and exact device model.
  • Hardware revision and any region, carrier, or product variant.
  • Installed firmware version and the date you recorded it.
  • For a downloaded image, its source, filename, and cryptographic hash.

Prefer an image downloaded from the manufacturer. A filename alone does not reliably establish the image’s version or integrity. For example, on Linux, calculate a SHA-256 hash with sha256sum firmware.bin, replacing firmware.bin with the actual filename. Preserve the hash with your notes so later findings can be tied to the same file. CISA’s SBOM guidance and the Firmware Embedded SBOM Specification describe component identity and hashes as useful inventory information.

Look for vendor evidence before inspecting binaries

Search the manufacturer’s product-security pages using the exact model and firmware version. Look for a software bill of materials (SBOM), security advisory, affected-version table, and vulnerability exploitability exchange (VEX) statement. An SBOM can identify components; an advisory can state which product releases are affected or fixed; and VEX can give the supplier’s product-specific applicability status for a vulnerability.

If those materials are not published, ask the manufacturer or product supplier for them. Include the exact model, hardware revision, firmware version, and image hash. Ask whether the product contains the affected component and configuration, whether the issue applies to this device and release, and which release fixes it. CISA explains how VEX can clarify whether a vulnerability listed in component data affects the product; the firmware specification describes a supplier chain for providing this kind of information.

Supplier confirmation can matter because the binary may not reveal how it was built. The Firmware Embedded SBOM Specification notes that the party with the source tree and build configuration may be the only one able to determine whether a particular binary is affected.

Inspect an available firmware image for component clues

If you have a vendor firmware image, a tool such as Binwalk can identify and optionally extract embedded files and data. Use its output to look for file systems, executables, certificates, package metadata, and recognizable component names or version strings. Work from a copy of the image and record the paths or offsets where you find clues.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Extraction is reconnaissance, not a vulnerability verdict. It does not by itself establish that every identified component is complete, active, reachable, or built with the configuration associated with a CVE. The project documentation describes Binwalk’s file-identification and extraction role; it does not claim that the tool determines whether an extracted component is vulnerable.

Keep an evidence record for every component match

Separate what you observed from what you inferred. This makes it easier to distinguish a strong product-specific finding from a string that merely resembles a component version.

Evidence source Record What it can establish What it cannot establish by itself
Vendor SBOM Component name, version, identifier or hash, supplier, and any stated relationships The supplier’s declared inventory for the product or build described by that SBOM That every listed component is affected by a particular CVE or is reachable in the device
Extracted file or package metadata Image path or offset, component name, observed version, and the metadata used to identify it That the inspected image contains a file or metadata consistent with that component That the observed version is complete, unmodified, or covered by the CVE’s affected configuration
String or banner match Exact string, where it appeared, and the image or device it came from A clue worth checking against stronger evidence Reliable component identity or vulnerability status
Vendor VEX or product advisory Product and release scope, stated status, date, and source The supplier’s documented applicability or remediation position for the stated scope A conclusion for a different hardware revision, region, or firmware release not covered by the statement

The firmware specification describes component identity, version, hashes, vendors, and relationships as useful inventory fields. Where possible, retain the source document or image alongside the notes, not just a copied version number.

Compare component clues with CVEs and affected versions

Search the National Vulnerability Database (NVD) and the component supplier’s and device manufacturer’s security advisories. For each candidate CVE, compare the component identity and version you observed with the CVE’s affected-version information. Then check whether the record or advisory names the exact product, firmware release, or configuration you have.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

NVD uses Common Platform Enumeration (CPE) as one kind of product-applicability metadata. A specific NVD record, CVE-2024-41616, associates a particular D-Link DIR-300 firmware version with a vulnerability. That shows how a product-and-version mapping can be recorded; it does not mean every CPE or version match proves that a device is exploitable. NVD’s affected-configuration data and presentation have changed over time, so consult the current record and its references. NIST’s NVD status page reported an August 26, 2026 update concerning affected configurations and SSVC presentation.

Do not treat a component’s presence in an SBOM as an automatic product vulnerability. The affected code may be absent, disabled, unreachable, or otherwise outside the affected configuration. Likewise, a version string or protocol banner can misidentify a component or produce an incorrect match. NTIA’s SBOM framing guidance cautions that limited signals such as version strings and banners can lead to false detections.

Decide whether a candidate applies to this device

Use the strongest available evidence to determine whether the affected code and configuration apply to the exact device and firmware build. A supplier VEX statement may classify a vulnerability as affected, not affected, fixed, or under investigation. Preserve the statement’s scope, source, and date; do not extend it to releases or variants it does not cover.

If the image and public records do not settle applicability, report the result as candidate match; applicability unconfirmed and ask the supplier for a product-specific determination. That is a more defensible conclusion than declaring a device vulnerable based only on a guessed version. In a 2022 case study of 127 router firmware images, the authors’ method filtered 68% of naïve Linux kernel version-to-CVE matches as false positives. That finding is specific to their method and sample, not a general false-positive rate for firmware scanning.

Prioritize confirmed or unresolved findings

Decide what to do by considering the product context, not a CVSS score alone. Compare candidate findings using these factors:

  • Identity: Is the product, hardware revision, and firmware release exact?
  • Component evidence: Is the component named in a vendor SBOM, or inferred from a binary clue or string?
  • Version scope: Does the CVE’s affected range match the observed component version and configuration?
  • Applicability: Does a vendor advisory or VEX statement confirm the product is affected, not affected, or fixed?
  • Operational risk: Is exploitation known, and how exposed and important is the device in its role?
  • Remediation: Is a fixed vendor release available, and what action does the manufacturer recommend?

For firmware integrity and recovery considerations, NIST SP 800-193 discusses protecting platform firmware against unauthorized changes, detecting changes, and recovering rapidly and securely.

Keep the assessment dated and reproducible

Firmware releases and vulnerability records can change. Save the device details, image hash, download source, component evidence, CVE and advisory references, vendor responses, and the date of each check. CISA announced updated joint SBOM minimum elements on July 29, 2026, including refined fields for component hashes, licenses, tool names, and generation context, with an emphasis on machine-processable formats. See the CISA announcement and recheck current vendor advisories and NVD records when updating an assessment.
