Press Windows key+I to open Settings in Windows 11, then type a setting or goal in the search box—or select a category from the navigation panel. Search is quickest when you know what you want; category browsing helps you explore related controls.
How to open and navigate Settings
- Press Windows key+I, or right-click Start and select Settings.
- To find a specific control, select the search box and enter a keyword such as display or notifications. You can also search for an outcome, such as “Change my theme,” “View storage usage,” or “My mouse pointer is too small.”
- If you want to explore, choose a category from the navigation panel. Category pages group related options and may link to more detailed pages.
Microsoft describes Settings as a central hub for managing PC preferences. The exact location of an option can vary with Windows build, hardware, region, or configuration, so search is useful when a menu has moved. Microsoft’s Windows Settings overview explains the interface.

Choose search or category browsing
- Search when you know the setting’s name or the result you want. Try a plain-language phrase if you do not know the exact label.
- Browse categories when you want to see related choices together—for example, look under Network & internet for connection options or Personalization for appearance.
Accessibility: navigate Settings with a screen reader
Microsoft’s screen-reader workflow uses the keyboard to move through Settings: press Tab and the arrow keys to move focus through categories, then press Enter to open one. Press Ctrl+E to move to the search box in the documented workflow. Microsoft’s Windows 11 accessibility guidance provides further information.

AI-assisted Settings search is limited to supported devices
Microsoft says improved natural-language search and an on-device Settings agent are available on Copilot+ PCs, not universally across Windows 11 devices. The agent can suggest fixes and, after you initiate the action and give permission, offer to apply a change. It does not change the setting automatically: you choose Apply.
Microsoft lists support for Chinese (Simplified), English, French, German, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish, and says the feature is available in all countries except China. Actual availability therefore depends on device, language, and geography. Microsoft’s Settings overview describes the feature.

Understand the limits of privacy permission lists
Privacy & security includes controls for app access to features and information such as location, camera, microphone, contacts, and calendar. Microsoft cautions that these lists mostly cover Microsoft Store apps. Desktop apps might not appear there and may access data differently, so the listed app permissions should not be treated as a complete control over every program. See Microsoft’s explanation of Windows app permissions.
