Early Gamescom and Tokyo Game Show sessions point to a visually richer world, broader exploration, sharply different playable characters and a new FITS equipment system. Those demos make a promising case for the final entry in the remake series, although the full game is not yet available for review.
What Final Fantasy VII Revelation is
Square Enix positions FINAL FANTASY VII REVELATION as the concluding chapter of its remake series, following FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE and FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH. The publisher has announced an April 8, 2027 release date for PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S and PC through Steam, the Epic Games Store and Xbox on PC.

That date and platform list are announced plans and may be updated before launch. Because Revelation remains unreleased, final performance, the complete campaign and review consensus cannot yet be judged.

A more detailed world to explore
Steve Boxer’s September 10, 2026 Gamescom preview for Creative Bloq describes environments that continue the earlier remake games’ visual style while appearing more detailed, crisp and colorful. His roughly 50-minute session included a brief visit to Wutai’s capital, whose vertical layout and Japanese-inspired architecture gave the setting a distinct identity.
#1 Best Overall
- Immerse yourself in the city of Midgar like never before, with improved textures, lighting, and background environments
- Players can switch between two game modes: o "Graphics Mode" prioritises 4K high-resolution graphics o "Performance Mode" prioritises smooth action at 60 frames per second
- Capture and share your memorable moments from the game with a fully customisable “Photo Mode”
- Players can enjoy immersive battles by using the DualSense PlayStation 5 controller with its haptic feedback integration
Boxer also reported wildlife photography and a stronger sense that exploration is part of the experience rather than simply movement between battles. He wrote that the session “easily passes muster when compared to the most recent and high-tech JRPGs,” while making clear that this was his reaction to a short playable preview, not a final review or consensus view.
Vincent and Cid play very differently
The Tokyo Game Show demo reported by PlayStation Blog Japan put Vincent and Cid in the playable party, offering a clearer look at how Revelation is broadening its combat roster.
Rank #2
- Weight: 0.25 lbs
- Great Gift Idea.
- Satisfaction Ensured.
- Produced with the highest grade materials
- Great for everyday use.
- Vincent: switches between firearm attacks and a monster form, giving him both ranged and transformation-based options.
- Cid: fights with a spear and emphasizes aerial attacks, creating a more mobile style than a conventional ground-based fighter.
The contrast matters because the remake series has increasingly built encounters around character-specific abilities. The preview suggests Revelation will continue that approach instead of making every party member feel interchangeable.
FITS adds another layer of customization
Revelation introduces FITS, short for Function-Integrated Tactical Suitwear. The demo showed four suit types, each associated with a different combat role:
Rank #3
| FITS type | Previewed role |
|---|---|
| Warrior | Suit-based abilities for a direct combat approach; the demo report does not detail its complete move set. |
| Knight | Suit-based abilities oriented around its named role; exact abilities were not fully specified in the report. |
| Black Mage | Suit-based magical abilities; the preview does not establish the final spell list. |
| Summoner | Allowed Cloud to call summons into battle. Another command triggered a powerful attack at the cost of HP. |
That HP trade-off is an especially important detail: the system is not presented as a free damage button, so players may need to weigh burst power against survivability. The demos do not establish how many suits the finished game contains, how they are upgraded or whether every character can use every type.
What the Whirlwind Maze demo showed
PlayStation Blog’s September 17, 2026 report followed a route through the Whirlwind Maze, with traversal across cliffs and ledges before a battle against Jenova Death. The encounter required the party to manage area fire attacks while destroying tentacles shielding the boss’s main body.
Rank #4
- The Amazon Exclusive Edition includes a FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH PS5 controller skin (inside the case) featuring Cloud and Sephiroth. This PS5 controller skin provides full coverage without buttons or sensor interference.
- An Expansive World: As the party searches for Sephiroth, explore the beautiful, expansive regions of the world and open up new areas to discover through unique forms of transportation
- Deepen their relationships to unleash powerful team based combos
- An Evolved Battle System: Combine strategic thinking with thrilling action combat alongside your comrades, including newly added characters
- Beyond the Walls of Fate: In this standalone adventure for fans and newcomers, Cloud and his comrades venture across the planet, their fates unwritten, making each step outside the dystopian city of Midgar fresh and mysterious
The reported group used Synergy Abilities and Limit Breaks to finish the fight. That sequence combines navigation, environmental positioning and coordinated attacks, giving a more concrete indication of how Revelation may structure its set-piece areas than a marketing trailer alone.
Is the game a full sequel or simply more of the same?
The early evidence points to a finale with its own mechanical identity. Wutai’s vertical environments, wildlife photography, Vincent’s transformation, Cid’s aerial spear attacks and FITS all add systems or locations not represented in the same way by the previous entries.
That does not prove the finished campaign will avoid repetition. The available reports cover limited demos, not the entire story, progression systems or endgame. The strongest defensible conclusion is that Revelation has made a distinctive first impression, not that it has already delivered a complete success.
Release editions and what they include
Square Enix’s North American store lists three physical choices. Contents and stock can vary by region, so buyers should verify the store page for their market before ordering.
| Edition | Documented contents | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|
| Day One Edition | Physical game edition; the cited store listing does not detail additional collectibles. | Players who want a standard physical copy. |
| Deluxe Edition | Promotional card, soundtrack, art book and SteelBook. | Fans who want physical extras without the statue bundle. |
| Collector’s Edition | The Deluxe Edition contents plus a Cloud, Zack and Sephiroth statue. | Collectors; the North American store describes it as limited. |
The listed materials are edition contents; the store information does not establish that the art book, soundtrack, SteelBook or statue will be sold separately.

Where newcomers should start
Square Enix’s store FAQ recommends catching up with FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE INTERGRADE and FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH, which it lists for PS5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S and PC. The recommendation is a way to follow the remake storyline, not a statement that either earlier game is mandatory to purchase before Revelation.
What remains unknown before launch
- Final graphics and performance on each announced platform.
- The complete length and structure of the campaign.
- How FITS suits are unlocked, upgraded and distributed among characters.
- Whether the April 8, 2027 date or edition availability changes by region.
- How the finished game performs outside the limited Gamescom and Tokyo Game Show demos.
The Bottom Line
The Gamescom and Tokyo Game Show previews show a confident direction for FINAL FANTASY VII REVELATION: a colorful, explorable world, differentiated combatants, FITS-driven customization and a substantial boss encounter. That is a strong early signal ahead of the announced April 8, 2027 launch, but only the finished release can confirm whether the finale sustains that promise.
