In an interview with Edge issue 429, as reported by GamesRadar+ on October 1, 2026, he said the team had not changed the core story in response to reactions.
What did the Final Fantasy 7 director say?
Hamaguchi, identified by GamesRadar+ as the Final Fantasy series lead, described the responsibility of adapting a much-loved game this way: “It wasn’t easy. I felt it was absolutely essential to avoid turning a masterpiece like FF7 into something that felt like my own personal fan project.”

He said the team’s test was larger than whether any one change matched the 1997 original: “The real challenge wasn’t simply incorporating elements that differed from the original or introducing new interpretations. It was constantly asking ourselves whether what we were creating could truly be called FF7R.” These quotations are GamesRadar+’s reporting of the Edge interview; the interview itself has not been independently verified here.
Why was remaking FF7 difficult?
The difficulty Hamaguchi described was balancing two responsibilities across three games: introducing new interpretations while preserving a recognizable Final Fantasy 7. That makes the remake’s identity a series-wide question, not just a tally of faithful or changed details in Remake or Rebirth.

Hamaguchi also said: “We haven’t altered the core of the story based on reactions at any given time.” In his account, audience responses were not a reason to change the core story, even as the trilogy reinterpreted parts of the original.
When does Final Fantasy 7 Revelation come out?
GamesRadar+ reports an April 8, 2027 release date for Final Fantasy 7 Revelation. That is a date reported by the outlet, not an independently verified official Square Enix announcement; because it is a future release, check Square Enix’s official channels for confirmation or any change.

Do you need to play the original before the remakes?
GamesRadar+ names the 1997 Final Fantasy 7, Remake, and Rebirth as possible games to catch up on, and says newcomers can start with the remakes. It does not establish a definitive play order or say that replaying any entry is required before Revelation.
