Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said more than 100 acres had been reclaimed at the Okhla, Bhalswa and Ghazipur landfill sites after 2.16 crore metric tonnes of waste were processed. The figures, reported by The Indian Express on 31 August 2026, are government-reported totals; the sources available do not establish that they have been independently audited. The report describes ongoing biomining and waste processing, not a newly launched project.
What Delhi’s 100-acre figure means
The reported total combines land reclaimed at three landfill sites: 35 acres at Okhla, 45 acres at Bhalswa and 20 acres at Ghazipur. The Delhi government figures cited in The Indian Express report pair those areas with about 70 lakh, 102 lakh and 44 lakh metric tonnes of waste processed, respectively.

A lakh is 100,000; 100 lakh is 10 million. The site figures add up to 216 lakh metric tonnes, or 2.16 crore (21.6 million) metric tonnes, and 100 acres. The report’s headline omits “crore” from its waste figure; its story text gives 2.16 crore, consistent with the rounded site totals.

How biomining turns old landfill into recoverable land
Biomining, also called bioremediation in the project’s tender title, involves excavating legacy waste, treating it biologically and separating out material that can be recycled or reused. The aim is to reduce the old waste mass and reclaim portions of the landfill. The Indian Express report says the Municipal Corporation of Delhi began biomining in 2019 following directions from the National Green Tribunal.
Reclamation does not, by itself, establish that the land is safe for every use or that remediation is complete. The cited figures measure reported processing and reclaimed area; they do not provide an independent assessment of environmental safety, final remediation quality or long-term land use.

Where recovered material goes
Gupta said the recovered inert material is being used to fill low-lying areas and prepare road bases. That is a reported use for material recovered from the landfill process, not a claim that all excavated waste is reusable.
A separate project at Okhla should not be confused with this legacy-waste work. Delhi’s Economic Survey 2025–26 lists four operational construction-and-demolition (C&D) waste processing facilities with a stated combined capacity of 5,000 tonnes per day. It also describes a proposed 1,000-tonne-per-day C&D facility on seven reclaimed acres at Okhla, intended to serve Central and South zones. The survey says a letter of intent had been issued and gives December 2026 as the likely commissioning date. It says processed C&D materials can be used for tiles, pavement blocks, ready-mix concrete and aggregates; these are construction-waste products, not a description of all material recovered by landfill biomining.

Why the deadlines may shift
The 31 August report says heavy rainfall slowed the MCD’s schedule and fresh waste continued to enter all three sites. That matters because processing the accumulated legacy waste does not stop new waste from arriving. The reported completion targets therefore depend not just on clearing old material but also on managing ongoing inflows and weather-related delays.
Bhalswa figures also vary by date and source. In a release dated 28 May 2026, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs said nearly 43 acres of the approximately 70-acre site had been reclaimed as of 26 May, with about 23.17 lakh metric tonnes of legacy and fresh waste remaining to be processed. The later Indian Express report gives 45 acres reclaimed and 102 lakh tonnes processed. These are separately dated snapshots, and the available information does not establish that their measurement methods or scopes are directly comparable. The 2026 ministry release identifies environmental safeguards, fire prevention and leachate management as work areas; it does not independently demonstrate their outcomes.

What the reported total does—and does not—show
The announcement offers a measurable account of processing and land reclaimed across three Delhi sites. It does not establish what each reclaimed parcel will ultimately be used for, whether all remediation is complete, or how much new waste will continue to accumulate. A 2025 ministry release described Bhalswa as a 70-acre site dating to 1994 and reported 25 acres remediated at that time; that earlier figure is historical context, not a current status update.

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi tender portal also lists an Okhla landfill reclamation tender through bioremediation and biomining, reference EE/SLF/OKHLA/MCD/2026-27/06. The page’s retrieved status information shows process stages but does not establish an award or identify a contractor.
