For dependable gameplay capture, record in OBS as MKV, then remux to MP4 if your editor or upload workflow needs MP4. Remuxing changes the container without re-encoding the video, so it avoids the quality loss and processing time that can come with transcoding. For YouTube, follow its current upload guidance for codecs, audio, frame rate, color, and bitrate rather than assuming one export profile suits every platform.
Choose a capture format that protects the recording
OBS recommends MKV for typical local recordings because an unexpected stop is less likely to corrupt the entire file. That makes MKV a sensible capture choice when a long session matters more than immediate compatibility with a particular editor. OBS’s recording format guide explains its available recording formats.

MP4 is commonly convenient for editing and uploading, but that does not mean it is always the safest format to record directly. Keep the capture resilient first, then make a compatible copy if needed.

Container and codec are different
MKV and MP4 are containers: they package video and audio streams. H.264, HEVC, and AV1 are video codecs: they describe how the video is encoded. Changing a file from MKV to MP4 can be a container-only operation; changing its codec, resolution, or frame rate requires an encode.

Remux when you only need another container
If the original video and audio streams are suitable but an editor or workflow expects MP4, use OBS’s built-in remuxing rather than re-encoding. In OBS, open File > Remux Recordings, select the recording, choose the destination, and start the remux. Check that the resulting file opens in the intended editor or upload workflow. OBS documents the feature in its remuxing guide.
Remuxing does not improve visual quality or change the codec; it avoids an additional video encode. If a destination requires a different codec, resolution, or frame rate, export through an editor or transcoder instead. That is transcoding, and the re-encode can affect quality and take longer. Processing time varies with the source, export settings, and hardware; there is no single reliable conversion-time estimate.

Use YouTube’s settings only for YouTube
YouTube’s official upload encoding recommendations specify MP4, H.264 video, AAC-LC or Opus audio, 48 kHz audio, and matching the upload frame rate to the recorded frame rate. For SDR video, YouTube recommends BT.709. Its guidance includes a live bitrate table by resolution and frame rate; use the corresponding row for your export rather than applying a bitrate from a different output size or cadence.

Keep the recorded frame rate
For YouTube, export at the frame rate used to record. Converting frame rates without a delivery requirement can alter motion cadence, which is especially noticeable in fast gameplay. Confirm the project and final export use the intended frame rate before processing a full recording.
Balance quality, file size, and system capacity
OBS offers recording quality presets with different file-size and performance trade-offs. Its Lossless preset produces around 7 GB per minute, according to the OBS Project’s Recording Encoder Presets Guide, dated September 14, 2023. That approximate, preset-specific figure is not a general estimate for gameplay recordings. Lossless can make sense for particular workflows, but it is usually impractical as a default for long sessions.

Higher-demand encoder choices can use more system resources, and 60-fps output can be demanding. Available encoders and their performance depend on the computer and configuration; OBS’s advanced recording settings guide covers recording options. Choose a preset that your system can sustain while playing, rather than choosing only by its quality label.
Test a short recording before a long session
- Set up the capture. In OBS, choose MKV if capture resilience is the priority, then select an encoder and quality preset that your system can handle.
- Record a brief sample. Include fast movement, game audio, and microphone audio if used. Review playback for detail, color, motion, audio-track selection, and synchronization.
- Try the intended conversion. Remux the sample to MP4 if the editor or workflow calls for it, then confirm the remuxed file imports and plays correctly.
- Export for the destination. For YouTube, check codec, audio codec and sample rate, frame rate, SDR color, resolution, and the matching bitrate row in YouTube’s current guidance. Re-encode only when a delivery requirement calls for a changed stream.
- Check the output. Inspect the finished file in the target editor or player and verify visual quality, sync, track selection, and file size before converting a large library.
OBS supports advanced recording workflows with multiple audio tracks. If you use them, verify that the exported file contains the intended tracks and that the editor or player handles them as expected.
Quick Recap
Which conversion workflow fits?
| Workflow | Use it when | What changes | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Record MKV, then remux to MP4 | You want a resilient OBS capture and an MP4 for an editor or upload workflow. | The container changes; the encoded streams do not need to be re-encoded. | Compatibility still depends on the receiving editor or service supporting the streams inside the file. |
| Export or transcode to a new format | The destination requires a different codec, resolution, or frame rate. | The video or audio may be decoded and encoded with new settings. | Encoding takes additional processing and can affect quality. |
