Field service companies can often find room to grow by understanding how jobs, people, parts, travel and assets work together—not simply by asking teams to do more. Operational data helps managers spot avoidable delays, repeat visits and scheduling gaps, then decide whether process changes, better tools or additional hires are needed. Data does not create growth on its own, and hiring may still be the right answer; the advantage is making that decision with a clearer view of how work actually flows.
What operational data adds beyond activity counts
A count of completed jobs, calls answered or technician hours describes activity. Operational visibility connects the records behind that activity so managers can understand performance and its causes. That can mean linking a work order to the technician’s skills and availability, the customer and asset history, parts used, travel time, work duration and the service outcome.

With those connections, managers can ask more useful questions: Are repeat visits concentrated in particular job types or locations? Are technicians spending time waiting for parts? Are jobs assigned to staff with the right skills? Which assets are unavailable, and why? Salesforce describes field-service analytics in terms of operational measures such as first-time fix, technician utilization, asset availability and SLA performance, while its help material covers service measures including work duration and travel. Salesforce’s field-service analytics overview and Salesforce’s field-service metrics help page outline examples.

The goal is not to maximize every metric in isolation. Higher utilization, for example, may look efficient while leaving too little room for urgent work or creating excessive travel. Measures are most useful when read together and connected to service quality, customer commitments and cost.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
Which measures help reveal where capacity is lost?
A practical starting set links service outcomes to the time and resources used to deliver them. The precise definitions should be agreed across the organization: a first-time fix rate, for example, is only comparable over time if teams consistently define what counts as a resolved job and a repeat visit.
- First-time fix: The share of jobs resolved without a return visit for the same issue. Segment it by job type, asset, region or skill requirement to look for patterns.
- Technician utilization: How much available working time is spent on productive service work. Review it alongside travel, waiting and administrative time; utilization alone does not show whether schedules are sustainable or jobs are being completed well.
- Work duration and travel: Compare expected with actual time, and distinguish time spent on site from time spent getting there. This can expose unrealistic job estimates, routing inefficiency or locations that need a different coverage plan.
- Parts readiness: Track whether required parts are available when a job is scheduled and whether shortages or incorrect parts lead to delays or repeat visits.
- Asset availability and service outcomes: Relate maintenance and repair records to uptime, downtime and customer impact, rather than treating each work order as an isolated event.
- SLA performance: Measure whether service commitments are met, and examine misses by cause—such as scheduling, parts, travel or job complexity—rather than treating the result as a technician-level score by default.
These measures can guide concrete choices: adjust appointment windows where travel is the constraint, improve parts planning where readiness is poor, or revise training and job information where repeat visits cluster around specific work. They can also show when the problem is genuine understaffing rather than avoidable friction.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
Why fragmented records make growth harder
When work orders, customer history, asset records, inventory and schedules sit in disconnected systems, managers may see separate fragments instead of the full service event. A scheduler might not know that an asset has a recurring fault; a technician may arrive without the relevant service history; a manager may see a late job without knowing that the required part was unavailable.

Salesforce describes unifying information across ERP, CRM and asset-management systems as a way to provide a more connected operational view. The practical requirement is that relevant records can be linked reliably—not merely that a company owns several software products. Teams also need shared definitions for key measures, accurate source records and responsibility for correcting errors.

Data problems are common in the sector: Geotab’s 2025 field-service report says 68% of surveyed field-service leaders were concerned about data-quality issues or siloed data. That is a survey finding, not a measure of every company’s systems. It does underscore why adding dashboards to inconsistent or disconnected records may produce false confidence rather than better decisions. Geotab’s 2025 report discusses the survey.
What the reported performance differences do—and do not—show
Deloitte Digital’s January 2026 field-service report compares organizations categorized as higher and lower maturity. It reports first-time fix rates of 73% and 64%, field-service profitability of 15.2% and 12.4%, and overall 2024 revenue growth of 18.1% and 12.9%, respectively. These are reported survey comparisons, not controlled evidence that data or software alone caused the differences. More mature organizations may differ in processes, management, workforce, investment or other ways, and the figures are not a forecast for a particular company. Deloitte Digital’s January 2026 field-service report provides the context.

The report states: “FSM software can solve visibility challenges by providing business leaders with a clear understanding of operational performance against strategic KPIs.” The useful implication is that software can make performance easier to see; visibility still depends on meaningful measures, connected records and sound operating practices.

| Area to assess | Questions to ask | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Data connections | Can the approach connect work orders, customer records, assets, parts or inventory, and existing ERP or CRM systems? | Managers need a linked view of the job and its context, not separate records that cannot be reconciled. |
| Operational measures | Can it report first-time fix, utilization, availability, duration, travel and SLA performance at useful levels? | Measures should support diagnosis by job type, location, asset or other relevant segment, not just produce a company-wide total. |
| Technician workflow | Can field staff access the job details and history they need while working, and does the proposed deployment fit their conditions? | Information has value only if it reaches the people doing the work. Confirm mobile capabilities and deployment details directly with vendors; the cited sources do not provide an independent comparison of mobile implementations. |
| Data foundations | Are source records accurate, consistently defined and governed? Who maintains them and resolves conflicts? | Poor inputs undermine reports and can steer scheduling or investment decisions in the wrong direction. |
| Implementation burden | What integration, training, change-management, administration and ongoing costs will be required? | A tool’s potential value must be weighed against the work and expense of putting it into dependable daily use. |
A commissioned Forrester study of Microsoft Dynamics 365 Field Service reports a 346% modeled ROI and modeled payback in under six months for its composite organization. Those estimates reflect the study’s modeled organization and interviews; they are not general benchmarks or a promise of results for another business. The study is commissioned by Microsoft, so treat it as a case-specific input to evaluation rather than an independent head-to-head test. Quick Recap
How to put operational visibility to work
- Choose a service outcome to improve. Define the issue in operational terms, such as repeat visits for a particular job class or missed appointments in a service area. Avoid starting with a tool purchase or a broad goal like “use more data.”
- Map the records needed to understand it. Identify the work-order, customer, asset, technician, parts, schedule and outcome information relevant to that problem. Note where each record lives and whether it can be linked to the others.
- Check definitions and data quality. Agree on what counts as a repeat visit, productive time, an available asset or an SLA miss. Review missing, outdated or conflicting records before using the measures to judge performance.
- Establish a baseline and examine segments. Measure the current result, then compare relevant job types, regions, assets or time periods. Look for a pattern that points to a process constraint, rather than assuming the overall average explains every case.
- Test a focused change. Adjust one relevant part of the workflow—such as parts preparation, job information or scheduling—and observe whether the chosen service outcome changes. Keep other relevant conditions in view; a change in a metric alone does not prove what caused it.
- Decide what capacity is still missing. If the work remains constrained after avoidable delays and process issues are addressed, additional technicians, vehicles or other resources may be justified. Operational visibility informs that decision; it does not replace it.
