Android’s camera and microphone privacy controls are not a hidden Developer options fix. On supported devices running Android 12 or later, separate device-wide toggles can block apps from accessing the camera or microphone. You can find them in Quick Settings or the Privacy section of Settings.
Where to find Android’s camera and microphone controls
On a supported Android 12-or-later device, open Quick Settings and look for the tiles labeled “Camera access” and “Mic access.” Tap the relevant tile to turn that access off. Android also documents these controls on the Privacy screen in Settings; the precise menu labels and tile availability can vary by device.

Camera and microphone access use separate controls. Turning off one does not, by itself, turn off the other. If you cannot find a tile, check the Privacy screen in Settings. Android’s documentation limits the feature to supported devices and does not list every supported model.
What happens when you turn a toggle off
Camera access
With camera access disabled, apps receive a blank camera feed rather than camera input. This is a device-wide control for apps, not just a permission change for one selected app.

Microphone access
With microphone access disabled, apps receive silent audio. Android also notes that this microphone-toggle behavior rate-limits motion sensor data for apps; it does not mean that all phone sensors are disabled.
There is an emergency-call exception: Android turns microphone access on when you place a call to emergency services.

Why this is not a Developer options setting
Android’s guidance describes the camera and microphone controls in Quick Settings and the Privacy screen, not as a universal Developer options feature. Developer options are system controls intended for app profiling and debugging. Android’s documentation about adding available developer tiles to Quick Settings does not identify the camera or microphone privacy controls as developer tiles.
Enabling Developer options is therefore not a documented fix for a missing camera or microphone tile. Android says that, on Android 4.2 and later, Developer options can be enabled by tapping Build number seven times; the screen’s location or name may differ by device. Those steps are unrelated to the device-wide privacy controls.

Device-wide toggles versus app permissions
The Android 12-or-later camera and microphone switches apply across apps on the device. Per-app permissions work differently: they control access for an individual app. Android 11 introduced an “Only this time” option for an app requesting location, microphone, or camera access, so a user could grant temporary access rather than leave the permission on indefinitely. These approaches have different scopes and are not interchangeable.

If the controls are missing
- Check the Privacy screen in Settings as well as Quick Settings; the tile may not be immediately visible.
- Confirm whether your device supports the feature and runs Android 12 or later. The official guidance does not provide a complete device-by-device compatibility list.
- Do not assume that enabling Developer options will add the controls. Android does not document that as a way to make the camera or microphone toggles appear.
