Use RTMPS when available. The command below is a starting template for looping a compatible playlist from Ubuntu; replace the input and ingest details, then test the actual files and connection before relying on it.
Recommended settings for 720p60
YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends these settings for H.264 at 720p and 60 fps. They are platform recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular computer or internet connection can sustain the stream.

| Setting | Starting value | How to apply it |
|---|---|---|
| Video codec | H.264 | Use FFmpeg’s libx264 encoder if available in your build. |
| Resolution and frame rate | 1280 × 720 at 60 fps | Scale and set the output frame rate; the example command does both. |
| Video bitrate | 8 Mbps recommended; 3 Mbps minimum | Choose a rate your upload connection can sustain with headroom. YouTube’s figures are guidance, not a promise of quality at every source or connection. |
| Bitrate mode | CBR | The example sets matching target and maximum rates as a practical way to constrain video bitrate; verify behavior with your FFmpeg build. |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds recommended; no longer than 4 seconds | At 60 fps, use -g 120 for two seconds; -g 240 corresponds to four seconds. |
| Audio | AAC stereo, 128 Kbps, 44.1 kHz | Use the example audio options unless your source or workflow requires a different compatible setup. |
| Ingest protocol | RTMP or RTMPS; YouTube recommends RTMPS | Use the endpoint and stream key shown in your channel’s Live Control Room. |
YouTube also lists compatible H.264 characteristics including progressive scan, square pixels, two B-frames, one reference frame, CABAC, 8-bit SDR, and Rec. 709 for SDR. Treat these as compatibility guidance rather than requirements that apply to every stream. See YouTube’s live encoder settings for the current platform guidance.

ffmpeg -version
ffmpeg -encoders | grep libx264
If libx264 is absent, the command will fail at encoder selection; install or build an FFmpeg version that includes it, or use an encoder available in your build and adjust the options accordingly. FFmpeg’s online documentation is regenerated for the newest revision, so options may differ from an older installation. Consult your installed help and documentation as needed; see the FFmpeg documentation index.
Create a concat-demuxer list
For a playlist using the concat demuxer, create a text file such as playlist.txt with one file entry per line:
file '/home/user/videos/part1.mp4'
file '/home/user/videos/part2.mp4'
The files should have matching streams, including codecs and time bases. If the videos differ, normalize them to common stream properties before concatenating, or test transitions carefully. A September 2024 FFmpeg-user discussion explains the concat demuxer’s stream-consistency constraint; a separate user report describes problems with a heterogeneous playlist, which is illustrative rather than evidence that every mixed playlist fails: concat-demuxer response and playlist streaming question.

Start a looping 720p60 stream
This is a starting template, not a tested or universally compatible command. It assumes a suitable concat list and an FFmpeg build with libx264. Replace the playlist path and RTMPS destination with your own values. Do not put your stream key in a shared script, public repository, or log.
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -f concat -safe 0 -i playlist.txt
-vf "scale=1280:720:force_original_aspect_ratio=decrease,pad=1280:720:(ow-iw)/2:(oh-ih)/2,fps=60,format=yuv420p"
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -profile:v high -b:v 8M -maxrate 8M -bufsize 16M
-g 120 -keyint_min 120 -sc_threshold 0
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -ac 2
-f flv 'rtmps://<ingest-address>/<stream-key>'
What the key options do
-rereads the input at its native playback rate rather than sending it as fast as the machine can process it.-stream_loop -1repeats the input indefinitely.-f concat -safe 0 -i playlist.txtreads the concat-demuxer list.-safe 0permits the absolute paths shown in the example; only use a list you control.- The video filter scales the picture to fit 1280 × 720 without changing its aspect ratio, pads any unused area, sets 60 fps, and outputs a common pixel format.
-b:v 8M -maxrate 8Msets the target and maximum video rates to 8 Mbps.-bufsize 16Mis a practical encoder-template choice, not a value YouTube specifically mandates.-g 120sets a 120-frame GOP, equivalent to two seconds at 60 fps.-keyint_min 120 -sc_threshold 0are template choices intended to keep keyframes regular; verify their behavior with your encoder build.- The audio options encode AAC stereo at 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz.
-f flvselects the output container used for RTMP-family streaming. Replace the placeholder destination with the RTMPS server address and key provided by YouTube.
The preset, profile, buffer size, scaling, frame-rate conversion, and other encoder controls in this example are practical template choices, not settings individually required by YouTube. If you need a different bitrate, change both -b:v and -maxrate consistently and retest.
Connect FFmpeg to YouTube Live
- Enable live streaming and open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Start or schedule the stream and obtain the ingest endpoint and stream key displayed for that stream.
- Use the stream-specific credentials. Replace the example RTMPS destination with the endpoint and key from the Live Control Room. Do not reuse a key unless YouTube explicitly presents it as reusable for your setup, and keep it private.
- Run FFmpeg and inspect its output. Confirm it opens the playlist, encodes video and audio, and connects without errors. A successful local connection alone does not establish that viewers can receive a healthy stream.
- Check YouTube’s stream health. Monitor the Live Control Room for ingest warnings or dropped frames while the stream runs.
- Test with the real playlist before depending on it. Check audio, motion, transitions, and upload reliability. YouTube Help says: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream. Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.”
Choose a bitrate your connection can hold
For H.264 720p60, YouTube lists 3 Mbps as the minimum and 8 Mbps as the recommendation. The higher recommendation is not automatically the right choice if your source has little detail or your upload is unstable. The encoded stream’s total rate includes audio as well as video, and your connection needs additional headroom for normal network variation. Test sustained upload performance and monitor the actual stream; if the connection cannot hold the rate, improve it or lower the stream quality rather than assuming the recommended video bitrate will work everywhere.

“Unknown encoder ‘libx264’”
Your FFmpeg build does not include the encoder. Check ffmpeg -encoders; use a build with libx264 or adapt the command to an encoder that is actually available.
Concat errors, timestamp warnings, or broken transitions
Check that every playlist entry points to a readable file and that the files have consistent streams, codecs, and time bases. Normalize mismatched inputs before concatenation or test each transition in a short trial stream. A user report from 2024 documents such issues with a heterogeneous playlist, but the result is not universal.

FFmpeg connects but YouTube reports poor stream health
Compare actual upload capacity with the encoded video and audio rates, then test at a lower bitrate or resolution if the connection cannot sustain the output. Check the Live Control Room for the specific ingest warning and verify that the endpoint and key are correct.
Keyframes are too far apart
At 60 fps, confirm that -g 120 is in effect for a two-second interval. Do not set the interval above four seconds; at 60 fps that corresponds to -g 240.

Audio is missing or unsuitable
Confirm that the playlist actually contains audio and that FFmpeg reports an audio stream in its output. The template encodes AAC stereo at 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz; test the sound in the YouTube preview rather than relying only on local playback.
The command fails on an older Ubuntu installation
FFmpeg options and encoder availability depend on the installed version and build. Check ffmpeg -version and local option help instead of assuming a command copied from current online documentation applies unchanged.
