FFmpeg YouTube Live Settings for a 720p Pre-Recorded Playlist

A practical FFmpeg starting configuration for a 720p YouTube Live stream, with bitrate and keyframe guidance, single-file looping, playlist cautions, and troubleshooting.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a typical 720p SDR YouTube Live feed encoded with H.264, start with constant bitrate (CBR) at 8 Mbps, AAC stereo at 128 Kbps, and a keyframe interval of about two seconds. YouTube lists 3 Mbps as the minimum H.264 video bitrate for both 720p30 and 720p60, but recommends 8 Mbps. The command below loops one file; a playlist of different files needs a compatible input arrangement and an end-to-end test.

Recommended settings for 720p

YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends RTMPS ingest, CBR, and H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video. For SDR, it specifies Rec. 709, progressive scan, square pixels, and 8-bit depth among the advanced settings. For stereo AAC audio, it lists 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps. See YouTube’s live encoder settings.

Setting Starting value How to choose or verify it
Resolution 1280 × 720 Use a 720p input or scale it deliberately. The example command does not resize video.
Frame rate 30 or 60 fps Match the source where possible. Choose 60 fps when the source and motion justify it; YouTube lists the same H.264 bitrate recommendation for 720p30 and 720p60.
Video codec H.264 A broadly documented baseline for the example. YouTube also lists H.265/HEVC and AV1; confirm the encoder and ingest path support whichever you select.
Video bitrate 8 Mbps recommended; 3 Mbps minimum YouTube’s H.264 recommendations for both 720p30 and 720p60. These are ingest recommendations, not a guarantee that your source, encoder, or connection can sustain the feed.
Rate control CBR Use constant bitrate encoding and leave upload headroom above the stream’s bitrate.
Keyframes About every 2 seconds At 30 fps, use a GOP of 60 frames; at another constant frame rate, set the GOP to about twice the frames per second.
Audio AAC stereo, 44.1 kHz, 128 Kbps Check that the input actually contains audio, or configure an appropriate audio source.
Ingest protocol RTMPS recommended YouTube lists RTMP and RTMPS; its current guidance recommends RTMPS.

Loop one pre-recorded video with FFmpeg

This starting example assumes a video file with both video and audio. Replace input.mp4 and the ingest URL placeholders with your file and the RTMPS address and stream name/key provided for your YouTube stream. Keep the key private: do not publish it in a script, screenshot, or log.

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i "input.mp4"
  -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -pix_fmt yuv420p
  -r 30 -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0
  -b:v 8M -minrate 8M -maxrate 8M -bufsize 16M
  -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
  -f flv "rtmps://INGEST_URL/STREAM_NAME"
  1. Check the source. Confirm its resolution, frame rate, aspect ratio, and audio before sending it. This command sets output to 30 fps, so use an appropriate frame-rate setting for your source and intended stream. If the source is not 720p, add a scale filter only after deciding how to preserve its aspect ratio or crop it.
  2. Set the two-second GOP for the output frame rate. Here, -g 60 and -keyint_min 60 correspond to two seconds at 30 fps. For another constant frame rate, use approximately twice that rate in frames. The command also disables scene-cut keyframes with -sc_threshold 0.
  3. Start paced playback and looping. FFmpeg documents -re as reading at the input’s native frame rate, useful when output packet flow matters for live streaming. -stream_loop -1 repeats this single input infinitely. Both are input options, so they appear before -i. See the FFmpeg documentation.
  4. Connect to the correct YouTube ingest. In YouTube Studio, get the ingest address and stream name/key for the intended stream, then substitute them for the placeholders. YouTube’s API describes an ingestion address and stream name; encoders may accept these separately or in the form STREAM_URL/STREAM_NAME. Keep the key confidential. See the YouTube Live Streaming API stream resource.
  5. Check the broadcast as well as the encoder. A YouTube broadcast is the watchable event; a stream is the transmission and settings resource used by the encoder. Sending data to the ingest does not by itself establish that the intended broadcast is scheduled or live. YouTube permits a stream resource to be reused for broadcasts at different times. See the broadcast resource documentation.

The command is an illustrative starting point, not a universal or tested recipe. Its 8 Mbps video setting is YouTube’s recommended H.264 bitrate for 720p, not a promise that a given connection or encoder can maintain it. The -bufsize 16M value is part of this example’s rate-control configuration; check the installed FFmpeg version and your encoder’s behavior.

Build a playlist from multiple files

The command above repeats one file; it does not define a general multi-file playlist. A compatible set of files may suit a concat input list, while mixed formats or other transition requirements may need a different playout arrangement. There is no universal command here that guarantees seamless joins: file compatibility, transitions, and audio continuity depend on the media and playlist construction.

  • Check that each file has compatible codecs, dimensions, frame rate, time base, and audio layout for the chosen concat method.
  • Inspect transitions for black frames, gaps, abrupt cuts, and audio discontinuities.
  • Test the complete playlist in order, including its loop point, before relying on it for a scheduled broadcast.
  • Do not assume that applying -stream_loop -1 to an arbitrary list will make it loop seamlessly.

Test and monitor before relying on the stream

YouTube says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Its guidance recommends a test with audio and movement similar to the actual event, checking upload bitrate with a speed test, and monitoring stream health and messages during the event. Use an appropriate private or unlisted test setup, confirm the preview’s video and audio, and verify that the received resolution and frame rate are the ones you intended.

  • Confirm the stream is connected to the intended broadcast and that the broadcast reaches the expected state.
  • Test the real playlist, not only a representative single file, if you plan to switch between recordings.

Troubleshooting common failures

Symptom Likely check What to do
FFmpeg reports no audio stream or the preview is silent The input may not contain audio, or the selected audio stream may not be mapped. Inspect the file’s streams and explicitly map or generate audio as appropriate; do not assume this example creates audio when the input lacks it.
Output is not 1280 × 720 The example does not force 720p. Check the input dimensions. If scaling is needed, use a scale filter that handles the source aspect ratio as intended.
Keyframe interval is not about two seconds The example’s GOP values assume 30 fps. For a different constant frame rate, set the GOP to approximately twice the frames per second and verify actual output behavior.
Connection fails or YouTube does not receive the feed Ingest address, stream name/key, protocol, or broadcast state may be wrong. Recheck the RTMPS address and private key in YouTube Studio, confirm encoder support, and inspect the intended broadcast’s state.
Stream health shows instability Upload capacity may be insufficient or inconsistent, or the encoder may not sustain the configured output. Check upload bitrate, leave headroom, and monitor YouTube’s health indicators and messages while testing.
Playlist has gaps, abrupt transitions, or broken looping Files may be incompatible with the concat arrangement, or the loop point may not be seamless. Test every transition and the end-to-start join; choose a playlist or playout method suited to the files rather than assuming single-file loop behavior applies.

Copyright and YouTube live eligibility

Only stream recordings you have the rights to use, including music, performances, and any material embedded in the video. A pre-recorded format does not remove copyright obligations or guarantee that a live broadcast will remain available. Review YouTube’s applicable live-streaming rules and copyright guidance in YouTube Studio before scheduling content; check any restrictions or claims that apply to the specific recording.
