FFmpeg YouTube Live Settings for 4K Video with libx264

Use YouTube’s H.264 targets—42 Mbps for 4K30 or 50 Mbps for 4K60—with CBR, a two-second GOP, and RTMPS. Includes an FFmpeg example and practical checks.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For YouTube Live with FFmpeg’s libx264, start with YouTube’s H.264 ingest recommendations: use 42 Mbps for 3840×2160 at 30 fps or 50 Mbps for 3840×2160 at 60 fps. Configure constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and RTMPS. For SDR, use progressive Rec. 709 video at 8-bit. These targets describe what to send to YouTube; they do not guarantee that a particular computer can encode 4K in real time.

Choose 4K30 or 4K60 and set the H.264 bitrate

Because libx264 encodes H.264, use YouTube’s H.264 bitrate recommendations—not the separate H.265 or AV1 figures on its encoder guidance page. YouTube does not state a publication year for the figures below.

YouTube Live mode Recommended H.264 bitrate FFmpeg -b:v value
3840×2160 (4K), 30 fps 42 Mbps 42000k
3840×2160 (4K), 60 fps 50 Mbps 50000k

These are YouTube’s recommended ingest bitrates, not a guarantee of viewer playback quality or a measurement of your internet connection. The 60 fps mode provides smoother motion when the source and viewing use support it, but it also calls for a higher ingest bitrate and more encoding work. Choose based on the source frame rate, available upload capacity, and whether your system can sustain the encode.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

FFmpeg’s -b:v value is in bits per second; using 42000k or 50000k expresses the corresponding rate in kilobits per second. YouTube recommends CBR. Pairing -b:v with matching -maxrate and an appropriate buffer is a practical rate-control setup, but a command-line combination alone does not prove the output is strictly CBR-compliant. Validate the actual stream in Live Control Room.

Set the encoder, GOP, picture format, and audio

Video and keyframes

  • Set -c:v libx264 to select FFmpeg’s x264 encoder.
  • Use CBR and send a keyframe every two seconds. YouTube says the interval should not exceed four seconds.
  • For a fixed frame rate, a two-second GOP corresponds to 60 frames at 30 fps or 120 frames at 60 fps. Set -g accordingly; -keyint_min can set the minimum interval. For fractional rates, calculate against the actual frame rate and check the resulting keyframe timestamps.
  • For SDR, YouTube specifies progressive scan, square pixels, Rec. 709, and 8-bit output. A common pixel format for this path is yuv420p; validate compatibility with your source and encode.
  • YouTube’s encoder guidance also lists two B-frames, one reference frame, and CABAC. The exact x264 options needed to enforce these depend on your FFmpeg build and configuration.

Audio

For stereo, YouTube lists AAC or MP3, a 44.1 kHz sample rate, and 128 kbps as the recommended audio bitrate. For 5.1 audio, it specifies AAC at 48 kHz and 384 kbps. The example below uses stereo AAC; change the channel count, sample rate, and bitrate if you are intentionally sending 5.1.

Latency

YouTube says its improve-for-low-latency option is unavailable for 4K, which uses normal latency. Do not expect a 4K stream to offer that setting in Live Control Room.

Example FFmpeg command for 4K30

This is an illustrative starting point for a 30 fps SDR source, not a universal or tested preset. Replace INPUT with the input file or source and replace the RTMPS placeholder with the current ingest address and stream key YouTube provides for your stream. Never publish a real stream key.

ffmpeg -re -i INPUT
  -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast
  -pix_fmt yuv420p -r 30
  -b:v 42000k -maxrate 42000k -bufsize 84000k
  -g 60 -keyint_min 60
  -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -ac 2
  -f flv "RTMPS_INGEST_URL/STREAM_KEY"

The example uses -preset veryfast as an implementation choice, not a YouTube requirement. FFmpeg documents presets as controlling encoding speed and quality behavior; the fastest setting that sustains your source and output is not established in advance. A preset that works on one machine may fail to keep up on another.

For 4K60, use -r 60, -b:v 50000k, matching -maxrate 50000k, and a two-second GOP such as -g 120 -keyint_min 120. Adjust the buffer and rate-control details for your setup and verify the delivered stream. If the source is fractional-rate, do not force an arbitrary integer frame rate without considering whether frames will be duplicated or dropped.

Use YouTube’s current RTMPS ingest details

YouTube recommends RTMPS, an encrypted extension of RTMP. Use the primary RTMPS ingest address and stream name supplied for the specific stream rather than hard-coding a permanent destination into a script intended for general use. The Live Streaming API also provides an optional backup RTMPS ingest address.

  1. In YouTube Live Control Room or through the Live Streaming API, create or select the stream and retrieve its current primary ingest address and stream name. Use the backup address only if you have configured a backup workflow.
  2. Keep the stream key private. Store it outside public scripts, screenshots, logs, and shared command histories; rotate it in YouTube if it is exposed.
  3. Start FFmpeg with the intended resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval, then check YouTube’s incoming stream status and health.
  4. Confirm the received resolution and frame rate. YouTube recommends automatic resolution and frame-rate detection by default in Live Control Room; manual selection is available with a custom key.

The API can accept 2160p and 30 fps, 60 fps, or variable detection settings. Status values such as ready, active, inactive, and error help distinguish a configured stream from one currently receiving data. An error diagnosis needs the health details and FFmpeg output for your particular stream.

Check whether your system and connection can sustain 4K

The published bitrate targets do not specify a minimum CPU, GPU, or upload speed, and no single preset is established as suitable for every computer. Test the exact input, encoder, frame rate, and destination before relying on a long broadcast.

  • Encoding capacity: Watch for FFmpeg falling behind, dropped frames, or sustained high system load. If it cannot encode in real time, try a faster preset, reduce the frame rate to 30 fps, or lower the output resolution. Recheck image quality and stream stability after each change.
  • Upload capacity: Make sure the connection can sustain the chosen video and audio rates. The available guidance does not prescribe a universal upload-overhead margin, so check the actual connection and YouTube stream health rather than assuming a particular speed is sufficient.
  • Source match: Avoid needlessly converting a source with a different frame rate or color format. Confirm the outgoing picture is progressive SDR Rec. 709 at 8-bit when following the SDR recommendations.
  • Keyframe cadence: Inspect output timestamps if using fractional frame rates or unusual filters; a nominal GOP setting is not a substitute for checking the encoded stream.

Troubleshoot common 4K ingest problems

Symptom Likely area to check What to do
YouTube does not receive the stream Ingest address, stream key, network access, or FFmpeg connection error Copy the current stream-specific RTMPS address and key from YouTube, check the FFmpeg error output, and confirm the stream is configured and ready in Live Control Room.
Stream connects but YouTube reports poor health Bitrate stability, upload capacity, or encoder falling behind Check Live Control Room health and FFmpeg/system load. Confirm the selected H.264 target, then reduce frame rate or resolution if the host or connection cannot sustain it.
Received resolution or frame rate is not the intended mode Input properties, FFmpeg output options, or YouTube detection settings Check the source and outgoing FFmpeg settings, then verify the mode shown in Live Control Room. Automatic detection is YouTube’s recommended default; manual mode is available with a custom key.
Keyframes are too far apart GOP settings or frame-rate conversion Set a two-second GOP—60 frames at 30 fps or 120 at 60 fps—and verify encoded timestamps, especially with fractional rates.
4K60 cannot run in real time Encoding workload exceeds the available system capacity Try a faster preset or move to 4K30; if that still does not keep up, lower the resolution. The platform recommendations do not define hardware minimums.

Keep the stream compliant with YouTube rules

Encoding settings do not grant rights to the video or music you broadcast. Before going live, make sure you have permission to use all material in the stream and review YouTube’s applicable copyright and monetization policies. A technically valid 4K feed can still be interrupted or restricted for policy or rights reasons.
