FFmpeg YouTube Live Loop Audio Out of Sync: How to Diagnose and Fix It

Find out whether an FFmpeg YouTube Live loop has a fixed audio offset, cumulative drift, or a loop-boundary jump—and troubleshoot the right cause without guessing at delays.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

First find out whether the audio is out of sync by a fixed amount, drifts further out over time, or jumps at each loop. Those are different problems: a measured, stable offset may call for a timestamp adjustment, while growing drift or a loop-boundary jump calls for checking stream timing, frame synchronization, and the source file. There is no reliable one-command fix without your FFmpeg command, version, and media details.

Identify how the sync problem behaves

Compare the start of the stream with playback later on, then check the moment the video repeats. Note which comes first—the audio or the picture—and whether the gap changes. These observations help narrow down where to investigate; they do not, by themselves, prove a specific cause.

  • About the same offset throughout: Check the audio and video start times. Only consider shifting timestamps after measuring which stream leads and by how much.
  • The mismatch grows over time: Investigate the relationship between the streams’ timing and rates, source timestamps, frame-rate conversion, and output synchronization. A one-time delay will not correct a mismatch that keeps growing.
  • Sync jumps or resets at each repeat: Inspect the file and timestamp continuity around the loop boundary.
  • Local playback looks right but YouTube does not, or vice versa: Compare local playback with YouTube’s preview and stream-health indicators. A playback observation alone does not establish whether the source, encoder, ingest, or downstream player is responsible.

Keep your existing command and record the installed FFmpeg version before changing anything. Make one change at a time so you can tell whether it helped.

Inspect the audio and video tracks

Use ffprobe to inspect the input’s streams. Record each track’s codec, start time, duration, audio sample rate, video frame rate, and timestamp or time-base information. Compare the audio and video timelines instead of assuming the container’s overall duration tells the whole story.

YouTube’s upload troubleshooting guidance notes that unequal audio and video track durations can prevent the tracks from syncing, and advises editing them so their durations match. That is a useful source-file check, not proof that unequal durations explain every live-loop problem: YouTube video upload troubleshooting.

Listen or inspect near the start and immediately before and after a repeat. A mismatch that begins or changes at the boundary makes the file’s track boundaries and timestamp continuity worth checking. A mismatch that steadily accumulates points instead toward timing or output-sync behavior.

Check the FFmpeg command and timestamp handling

Confirm the loop applies to the intended input

FFmpeg documents -stream_loop as an input option. Check that it appears before the input it is meant to loop, and verify that the intended audio and video streams are mapped to the output. Stream mapping and timestamp choices affect which streams are sent and how synchronization is handled. Do not treat -stream_loop -1 as a general audio-sync correction; looping a file does not by itself establish or repair sync.

Review frame synchronization rather than adding options blindly

FFmpeg’s -fps_mode controls output frame synchronization. Its documented modes include passthrough, which preserves demuxer timestamps; CFR, which duplicates or drops frames to achieve a requested constant frame rate; VFR, which passes timestamps or drops frames to avoid duplicate timestamps; and auto, which selects according to muxer capability. The muxer may also modify timestamps.

Choose a mode based on the source and delivery requirement, not as a presumed audio-delay fix. The legacy -vsync option is deprecated in current FFmpeg documentation. Check the documentation for your installed build before changing timing options; available behavior can depend on version and output format. FFmpeg also documents that you can leave audio or video unchanged and synchronize the remaining stream or streams to it, but that does not identify the right reference stream for an unspecified case: FFmpeg command-line documentation.

Observe local playback drift when useful

FFplay’s -stats output includes the current position and audio/video synchronization drift. Use it to observe local playback, not as a guarantee that YouTube’s live ingest will behave identically. FFplay documents master-clock selection mainly as a debugging option, not a universal correction: FFplay documentation.

Verify the YouTube live path and encoder settings

For general RTMP/RTMPS streaming, YouTube’s encoder guidance lists AAC or MP3 audio and constant bitrate (CBR). It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Its advanced recommendations specify 44.1 kHz audio for stereo and 48 kHz for 5.1 audio; the corresponding recommended audio bitrates are 128 kbps for stereo and 384 kbps for 5.1. These are encoder recommendations, not a diagnosis of drift in a particular stream. Check the current guidance for your chosen protocol and stream configuration: YouTube Live encoder settings.

Test with representative audio and video before going live, then monitor YouTube’s stream health. In YouTube’s setup, enter the stream URL and stream key in your encoder. Treat the key as a private credential that allows YouTube to accept the feed. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; archiving is not a sync remedy: Set up a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted extension of RTMP. If connection diagnostics point to a transport problem, check that the server URL is correct and that the encoder supports RTMPS; YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance discusses port 443 where an SSL connection requires it. Do not switch protocols as a sync fix unless the connection itself is implicated: YouTube Live encoder troubleshooting.

Follow a controlled troubleshooting sequence

  1. Save the current setup: Keep the command unchanged and note your FFmpeg version and the exact input file.
  2. Classify the symptom: Check whether the offset is stable, grows with time, or changes at the loop boundary. Record which stream leads and when you observed it.
  3. Inspect the input: Use ffprobe to compare audio and video starts, durations, sample rate, frame rate, and timestamp or time-base information.
  4. Audit the command: Check which input receives -stream_loop, confirm audio and video mapping, and review timestamp and frame-sync options against the documentation for your installed build.
  5. Compare observations: If useful, watch local playback with FFplay statistics, then compare it with YouTube’s preview and stream-health indicators.
  6. Test the live settings: Verify the applicable YouTube encoder recommendations, use representative audio and video, and change one timing or encoding variable at a time.
  7. Apply only a measured correction: Use a fixed offset only when the evidence shows a stable offset. For growing drift, investigate the timing or rate relationship rather than guessing a fixed delay.

Common fixes that can make diagnosis harder

  • Adding a guessed -itsoffset or audio delay: First establish which stream is early and measure the gap. A guessed shift can make the start look better while leaving growing drift untouched—or move the tracks in the wrong direction.
  • Adding resampling or frame-rate options without evidence: These change timing behavior. Inspect the source and determine whether the symptom is fixed, cumulative, or tied to the repeat before changing them.
  • Changing several settings at once: If the result improves or worsens, you will not know which change mattered. Restore the saved command and test one variable at a time.
  • Switching to RTMPS to fix sync: RTMPS is a transport choice. Use it to address a connection issue indicated by diagnostics, not as a presumed correction for mismatched track timing.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the issue is part of the work of keeping a prerecorded YouTube stream running continuously, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos, not a camera feed.

  • Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on.
  • Each slot streams uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; there are no quality tiers or re-encoding.
  • It automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
  • The first day is free with no card. The monthly price is $9.99 per month.

What to include when asking for a specific diagnosis

A reliable command-level fix depends on details not contained in the symptom alone. Share the FFmpeg version, full command with the stream key removed, relevant ffprobe output, whether audio or video leads, when the mismatch starts, and whether it grows or changes at each loop. Also say whether the same mismatch appears in local playback and YouTube’s preview. Do not publish your stream key.
