A blank Cloudinary screenshot can mean two different things: URL2PNG returned a blank or failed capture, or the webpage’s Cloudinary image element never received a usable src. Start by checking the actual network request, then follow the matching branch below; the blank appearance alone does not identify the cause.
First, identify which image is blank
Check whether the blank image is the screenshot file returned by Cloudinary URL2PNG, or an image inside a webpage that uses Cloudinary. These are separate failure paths. For either one, open the browser’s Developer Tools, select Network, reload, and inspect the Cloudinary request. Record its HTTP status and response headers, especially X-Cld-Error. Cloudinary recommends that header for diagnosing transformation delivery problems; its troubleshooting page was last updated September 9, 2026 (Cloudinary transformation troubleshooting).

- Request fails or returns an error: investigate URL syntax, missing assets, access controls, or URL2PNG setup.
- Request succeeds, but an on-page image is blank: inspect the element’s
srcanddata-srcand whether responsive-image JavaScript ran. - The screenshot file is valid, but the captured webpage is empty or incomplete: investigate rendering of the public target page and URL2PNG capture options.
Chrome and Edge expose the response details in Network request headers; Firefox and Safari provide equivalent Network/Headers inspection. Do not infer a specific root cause just from the rendered blank area.
Fix a failed Cloudinary or URL2PNG request
Read the response before changing the URL
Cloudinary says a 400 Bad Request is returned when a delivery URL is invalid. Its X-Cld-Error response header can give the reason, such as an invalid transformation parameter. Use the reported error rather than changing settings at random.

- Check that options are supported together. Cloudinary documents incompatible combinations, including certain uses of
g_auto. - Confirm that every base image and overlay public ID exists and that the resource type and folder path are correct.
- For a 404 or missing-asset message, verify the referenced asset and its access type before treating it as a capture problem.
Cloudinary’s troubleshooting material describes invalid syntax or values, conflicting options, unsupported features, missing base or overlay assets, and signature or access restrictions as possible transformation-delivery causes. A blank-looking result does not distinguish among them.
Check URL2PNG registration and signatures
URL2PNG is a Cloudinary add-on for screenshots of public websites. Its delivery type is url2png. Cloudinary’s add-on documentation, last updated June 3, 2026, says: “By default, delivery URLs that use this add-on either need to be signed or eagerly generated.” (URL2PNG Website Screenshots Add-on)
- Confirm that URL2PNG is registered for the Cloudinary account.
- For a screenshot generated on demand, create the signed delivery URL with a backend SDK. Keep the API secret on the server; do not place it in browser-side code.
- If the image should exist before the first view, use Cloudinary’s authenticated API to eagerly generate it, then serve the generated image through a regular URL.
- Check whether unsigned add-on transformations are permitted in the account’s Console Security settings. Cloudinary documents this as an account option; enabling it changes the access model and may have cost-control implications.
Signed dynamic generation suits requests that need a screenshot when requested. Eager generation suits images you want prepared ahead of their first view. The unsigned setting is a separate account-level choice, not a universal fix for blank capture content.

Check private and authenticated assets separately
Private and authenticated delivery has its own signature requirements. Cloudinary states that authenticated assets cannot be transformed on the fly; eagerly generated derived versions need their own signatures. Verify the delivery type and the exact signature on the derived URL. A URL2PNG add-on signature issue and an authenticated source-asset issue can look similar in a page, but require checking different parts of the request.
Fix an on-page Cloudinary image with an empty src
Some Cloudinary responsive-image workflows initially keep the real transformed URL in data-src and leave src blank until the responsive library runs. In that case, an empty src may be intentional before initialization.
- Inspect the image element in the DOM. Compare its
srcanddata-src. - If
data-srccontains the expected Cloudinary URL, confirm the intended responsive library loaded successfully and in the right order. - Confirm the page calls the library’s responsive method after the relevant elements are available.
- Check that the image has a usable container width; responsive sizing depends on the layout being measurable.
- Reload with Network open and confirm that initialization results in a request for the image URL and a successful image response.
If both attributes are empty, or the responsive method never runs, focus on markup and script initialization. If the request does run, diagnose its response status and X-Cld-Error as described above. Cloudinary documents this workflow in its responsive images documentation.

When the captured webpage is blank or incomplete
First open the target public URL directly. If it is also blank or incomplete, the issue is not established to be a Cloudinary image-delivery failure. If the target loads normally but URL2PNG’s screenshot does not, use the documented capture options as diagnostic levers: adjust the viewport, user agent, or delay, then compare results. The URL2PNG documentation describes these options, but they do not prove that a particular target site is blocking or delaying capture, and there is no single documented fix for all rendering failures.

- HTTP status and response headers, including
X-Cld-Error. - Whether the returned bytes form a valid image.
- For an on-page image, the element’s
srcanddata-src, plus whether the responsive method ran. - Whether the target public page opens normally when visited directly.
Cloudinary’s transformation troubleshooting points readers to its X-Cld-Error inspector and, for qualifying accounts, Console error reports. Do not share API secrets or signed tokens when asking for help.
