For a 1080p, 25 fps YouTube Live stream, start with progressive 1920×1080 H.264 video, constant bitrate (CBR), and a keyframe every two seconds—50 frames at 25 fps. YouTube does not publish a separate H.264 bitrate recommendation for 1080p25; its nearest listed reference is 14 Mbps for 1080p30. Treat that as a starting point, test from the actual connection and monitor YouTube’s stream health.
Recommended starting settings
This setup targets SDR video encoded as H.264, with stereo AAC audio. YouTube recommends CBR, a two-second keyframe interval (not more than four seconds), and RTMPS where supported. Its advanced recommendations include progressive scan, square pixels, Rec. 709 SDR and 8-bit SDR.

YouTube’s current H.264 live table also lists 1080p60 at 6 Mbps minimum and 17 Mbps recommended. That is a different frame-rate row, not a substitute recommendation for 1080p25. Do not use upload-video recommendations as live-ingest settings. YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance is the reference for these values.
FFmpeg command for an existing video file
Replace INPUT, the ingest host and the stream key with your own values. This is an illustrative template, not a tested command or guaranteed quality setting.

-rereads a media file at its intended playback rate. It is useful for file replay, not a switch to apply blindly to live capture inputs.- The video filter scales to fit 1920×1080 without changing the source aspect ratio, pads the frame to the target size, sets 25 fps, and outputs yuv420p. If the source already has the desired dimensions, aspect ratio and frame rate, remove unnecessary conversions to avoid extra processing.
-b:v,-minrateand-maxrateset the example’s fixed 14 Mbps target. Get the YouTube stream URL and key
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select the live stream.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown there into the FFmpeg output destination. Use the exact ingest details YouTube provides for your account rather than assuming a regional URL.
- Keep the stream key private. Anyone with access to it may be able to send video to your channel.
- Start FFmpeg and check Live Control Room for incoming video, audio and stream-health messages.
YouTube describes latency as the delay from capture to playback; lower latency can increase playback buffering. Choose the latency setting in Live Control Room based on how quickly you need viewers to see the stream versus how much buffering risk you can accept. Test the settings from your India connection
The cited YouTube guidance is platform-wide; it does not specify an India-only bitrate, ingest URL or FFmpeg flag. Network performance depends on your ISP, location, route and available uplink, so test at the place and time you plan to stream rather than relying on a nationwide upload-speed assumption.
- Check sustained upload capacity from the actual encoder location. Leave headroom above the target bitrate for network variation and other traffic.
- Run a full pre-event test with representative motion and audio, not just a static image. YouTube’s advice is direct: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” See YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
- Watch the stream-health indicators and error messages in Live Control Room. Confirm that video arrives at the intended resolution and frame rate and that audio is present.
- If delivery is unstable, reduce bitrate or resolution and test again. A bitrate that works on one connection is not guaranteed to work on another.
Troubleshooting common problems
FFmpeg reports that libx264 is unavailable
Your FFmpeg build may not include the encoder. Install or build an FFmpeg version with libx264 support, or select a video encoder available in your build and verify that its output settings meet YouTube’s ingest requirements.

The RTMPS connection fails
Check that the URL and key were copied from Live Control Room and that the key has not been revoked or replaced. Verify RTMPS support in your FFmpeg build. If the command still cannot connect, inspect FFmpeg’s error output and confirm that the network allows the connection.
YouTube reports unstable or insufficient stream health
The uplink may not sustain the chosen bitrate, or the encoder may be falling behind. Test upload capacity at the streaming location, stop competing uploads, then lower the bitrate or output resolution and repeat the full test. Also check that encoding speed remains at or above real time.

Video looks stretched or has black bars
The example preserves the source aspect ratio and pads to 16:9; padding can therefore appear when the source is not 16:9. If the source has the correct dimensions and aspect ratio already, remove the scale and pad filters. Avoid forcing a different aspect ratio unless cropping or distortion is intentional.
Frame rate or motion looks wrong
Confirm that the filter sets 25 fps and that the machine can encode continuously at real time. If the source is already 25 fps, you may remove fps=25 to avoid needless frame-rate conversion. Test with motion similar to the actual program.

Audio is missing or out of sync
Confirm that the input contains an audio stream and that FFmpeg is not reporting an audio-encoding error. Keep the AAC stereo settings consistent with the example, then check synchronization in a test stream before the event.
