FFmpeg’s concat demuxer reads a text file listing whole local media files and sequences them as one input. An HLS media playlist is a manifest for media segments sent using HLS. For a fixed set of compatible files, the concat demuxer is usually the relevant choice; use an HLS media playlist when your workflow is HLS delivery to YouTube.
“Playlist file” is ambiguous: it can mean the concat script or an HLS .m3u8 manifest. The distinction matters because YouTube’s HLS ingestion accepts media playlists and ignores master playlists. FFmpeg documents the concat demuxer; YouTube documents its HLS requirements.

What each file does
FFmpeg concat script: a list of whole files
The concat demuxer reads a text script containing file paths and directives, then demuxes the listed files one after another as if their packets had been muxed together. It is an FFmpeg input mechanism for sequencing local media files; it is not an HLS manifest and does not itself create HLS segments.

A minimal script looks like this:
ffconcat version 1.0
file 'part1.mp4'
file 'part2.mp4'
Each file line names an input file. The script can be supplied to FFmpeg as the concat demuxer input, for example with -f concat -safe 0 -i playlist.ffconcat. The -safe 0 option permits paths that the demuxer’s default safety checks might reject, so use it only with paths and files you trust.

HLS media playlist: a manifest for segments
An HLS playlist, commonly ending in .m3u8, describes media segments for HLS delivery. FFmpeg’s HLS muxer is the component that creates an HLS playlist and its segment files; that is separate from using the concat demuxer to read a list of source files. See FFmpeg’s HLS muxer documentation.
For YouTube HLS ingestion, send a media playlist, not a master playlist. YouTube says master playlists are ignored. Its documented requirements include HTTPS, persistent connections, one encoded stream, and muxed audio and video. Follow the current YouTube HLS ingestion guidance for the playlist, segments, and delivery details.

Which one should you choose?
| Your goal | Use | Important constraint |
|---|---|---|
| Sequence compatible local media files as one FFmpeg input | Concat demuxer with a text script | Files need matching streams, codecs, and time bases; duration accuracy affects timestamps. |
| Join clips that need re-encoding or substantial format normalization | Concat filter | FFmpeg’s FAQ points to the filter for workflows where re-encoding is needed; it is not the same as stream-copy concatenation. |
| Deliver segmented media to YouTube over HLS | HLS media playlist and media segments | YouTube ignores master playlists; satisfy its HLS ingestion requirements. |
FFmpeg’s concat FAQ describes the concat filter as the approach to consider when re-encoding is required. These are conditional choices: the right path depends on your files, delivery protocol, and whether transcoding is acceptable.

Check compatibility first
The concat demuxer expects the listed files to have the same streams, including codecs and time bases. Do not assume unrelated clips can be joined cleanly just because they are all MP4 files. Different stream layouts or parameters can cause FFmpeg to fail, produce timestamp problems, or make a transition behave badly.

File duration matters too. The demuxer adjusts timestamps using file durations; unequal stream lengths can introduce gaps, and inaccurate duration information can lead to artifacts. Check the files and their stream properties before relying on a stream-copy sequence.
Build and run the input script
- Put the source files in order. Use a stable sequence and make sure each file has compatible streams and timing.
- Create the concat script. Save the
ffconcatexample above asplaylist.ffconcat, replacing the sample names with your actual file paths. Quote paths carefully, especially if they contain spaces or special characters. - Use the script as FFmpeg input. The input portion of the command is
-f concat -safe 0 -i playlist.ffconcat. What follows depends on your YouTube ingest method, output encoding, and whether the sources can be stream-copied; the title alone does not establish those choices. - Inspect the result before using it for a continuous broadcast. Confirm the order, transitions, audio/video continuity, and timestamps. Correct source duration or compatibility problems rather than expecting the demuxer to normalize mismatched media.
When stream copying is not appropriate
If clips need re-encoding or meaningful normalization to match, consider FFmpeg’s concat filter rather than treating the demuxer as a universal joiner. The filter workflow has different requirements and can involve transcoding. Choose it when the media needs conversion; choose the demuxer when compatible files can be sequenced without re-encoding.

Using HLS for YouTube delivery
Choose HLS when you intend to deliver a segmented stream using YouTube’s HLS ingestion path. The HLS output comprises a media playlist and referenced media segments. A master playlist is not a substitute: YouTube’s guide says it ignores master playlists and supports media playlists for HLS ingestion.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Use HTTPS for HLS delivery.
- Keep requests persistent as required by YouTube’s HLS guidance.
- Send one encoded stream, with audio and video muxed together.
- Follow YouTube’s current playlist and segment requirements rather than assuming any locally generated
.m3u8is acceptable.
FFmpeg’s HLS muxer can create the playlist and segment files, but creating those files is only one part of an HLS delivery workflow. Your sender and output must also meet YouTube’s ingestion requirements. A concat script, by contrast, is an input list of whole files; it does not become an HLS playlist by having a playlist-like name.

Common problems and how to diagnose them
- FFmpeg rejects the concat input or streams change unexpectedly: compare the streams, codecs, and time bases in every source. The demuxer requires matching streams; use a normalization or concat-filter workflow if they differ.
- There is a gap or timestamp artifact between files: check stream durations and duration metadata. The demuxer bases timestamp adjustment on file durations, so inaccurate durations can affect the sequence.
- YouTube does not accept the HLS output: confirm that you are sending a media playlist rather than a master playlist, using HTTPS and persistent requests, and providing one encoded stream with muxed audio and video. Check the current YouTube requirements for the details of the ingest session.
- You expected a concat script to create HLS segments: use FFmpeg’s separate HLS muxer for HLS output. The concat demuxer only sequences input files.
- You are unsure which exact command to run: first decide whether the destination is RTMP or HLS, inspect the source streams, and decide whether transcoding is allowed. Those choices determine the output options; there is no single safe command implied by the phrase “continuous YouTube stream.”
