To loop a local gaming VOD indefinitely into YouTube Live, put FFmpeg’s -stream_loop -1 input option before -i, then send the output to the RTMPS server URL and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. The command below is a starting point for a VOD with both video and audio streams. It repeats the file, but cannot guarantee that every file will sound or look seamless at the join: test the actual boundary before making the broadcast public.
Use this FFmpeg command
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i "gaming-vod.mp4"
-c:v libx264 -b:v 10M -maxrate 10M -bufsize 20M -g 60
-c:a aac -b:a 160k
-f flv "rtmps://SERVER/live2/STREAM_KEY"
Replace gaming-vod.mp4 with the path to your recording. Replace the destination with the server URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room; do not publish or share the key. This example assumes the input contains video and audio. It uses FFmpeg’s automatic stream selection; if the VOD has unusual or multiple streams, inspect it and specify the intended streams explicitly.

-rereads the file at its native rate, producing a live-style feed rather than sending the file as fast as possible.-stream_loop -1loops the input indefinitely. It is an input option, so it must appear before-i. FFmpeg documents-1as an infinite loop.-c:v libx264encodes video as H.264;-c:a aacencodes audio as AAC.-b:v 10Msets the video bitrate target to 10 Mbps. The example’s bitrate settings are illustrative for 1080p30 H.264, not a universal best setting.-maxrate 10Mand-bufsize 20Mconstrain the video rate and set the encoder buffer. They do not replace a suitable upload connection.-g 60sets a GOP of 60 frames. That is a two-second interval only at 30 fps; choose a GOP appropriate to the actual output frame rate.-b:a 160ksets audio bitrate to 160 kbps, and-f flvselects the container used for this RTMPS ingest pattern.
Match the output to YouTube and your connection
YouTube Help’s encoder guidance, accessed October 3, 2026, lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest; H.264, H.265, or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); frame rates up to 60 fps; and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. For H.264, its examples recommend 10 Mbps at 1080p30 and 12 Mbps at 1080p60. These are recommendations for the stated formats, not a reason to raise bitrate beyond what your connection can sustain. See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →The sample command does not set an output frame rate or force CBR, so do not assume it satisfies every stream configuration as written. Choose an output resolution and frame rate that suit the source, set an appropriate constant bitrate and keyframe interval for that output, and confirm the encoder’s resulting settings. YouTube recommends testing with representative movement and audio, monitoring stream health, and keeping 20% upload-bandwidth headroom over the total stream bitrate. A higher target bitrate is not an improvement if the connection cannot reliably carry it.

Set up the YouTube Live ingest
- Check eligibility. YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions during the previous 90 days. Enabling live streaming for the first time can take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube Help. Allow for that delay before a scheduled broadcast.
- Create or select a stream. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create a stream or select the one you intend to use. YouTube’s setup guidance is at Set up a live stream on YouTube.
- Copy the ingest details. Use the stream URL and stream key displayed in Live Control Room as the command’s destination. The URL tells the encoder where to send the feed; the key identifies the stream and is password-like information. Keep it private.
- Start FFmpeg and inspect the preview. Check the Live Control Room preview and stream health before starting or promoting the event. If the preview is wrong, stop and fix the encoder or source rather than letting the fault run.
- End the broadcast deliberately. Stop FFmpeg when finished and end the stream in Live Control Room as appropriate. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That archival note is not a guarantee of an indefinitely uninterrupted event.
What “without a gap” can—and cannot—mean
The loop option makes FFmpeg repeat the input; it does not make the boundary between the end and start of a VOD seamless. A pause, repeated frame, audio click, or other discontinuity can depend on the file’s timestamps, encoding structure, or mismatched audio and video durations. FFmpeg’s concat demuxer documentation warns that timestamp adjustment can cause gaps when streams do not have exactly the same length and that concatenated files require matching streams, codecs, and time bases. Those warnings do not mean every single-file loop will have a gap, but they are good reasons to check your own source and join.
Test the actual join before going public
- Inspect the VOD’s streams and durations. Confirm it has the expected video and audio, and check whether their durations agree.
- Run the command locally and observe and listen across multiple repeats. Pay particular attention to the last frames and audio samples before the join and the first ones after it.
- If audio extends beyond video, or video beyond audio, prepare a corrected source or explicitly map and trim the streams to a common duration. Do not assume an infinite loop can fix mismatched media.
- Send a test as an unlisted or private stream and check the YouTube preview and stream-health indicator across a repeat boundary before promoting a public broadcast.
FFmpeg’s format and demuxer documentation is available at ffmpeg.org/ffmpeg-formats.html.

Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg exits or reports that it cannot open the input | The path or filename is wrong, or the process cannot access the file. | Use the correct local path, quote paths containing spaces, and verify the file is readable. |
| YouTube does not receive the feed | The destination URL or key is incorrect, the stream is not ready, or the channel cannot currently stream. | Copy the current URL and key from Live Control Room, check channel eligibility, and read FFmpeg output and YouTube’s preview for the specific error. Treat the key as a secret. |
| Video arrives, but there is no audio (or vice versa) | The source may lack the expected stream, contain multiple tracks, or use a stream FFmpeg did not select as intended. | Inspect the input streams and explicitly map the intended video and audio streams; verify both in the local test and YouTube preview. |
| The broadcast stutters or stream health degrades | The output bitrate may exceed reliable upload capacity, or the connection may be unstable. | Check the selected resolution, frame rate, and total bitrate; test with representative action and audio, and preserve YouTube’s recommended 20% upload headroom. |
| A pause, repeated frame, or audio discontinuity occurs at each repeat | The source’s timestamps, encoding structure, or audio/video durations may not align cleanly at the boundary. | Watch and listen to the join locally, compare stream durations, and correct or trim the source to a common endpoint before testing again on an unlisted or private stream. |
| The stream archives but does not keep running as expected | YouTube’s under-12-hour automatic archive behavior may be mistaken for a continuous-run guarantee. | Remember that the archival note describes streams under 12 hours; it does not promise an unlimited uninterrupted broadcast. Monitor the encoder and Live Control Room. |
Keep FFmpeg running: local machine or cloud
With this do-it-yourself method, FFmpeg must remain active and able to read the VOD and send data to YouTube. A local workstation therefore depends on its power, process stability, and internet connection; a hosted FFmpeg process shifts those operational dependencies to the host, but still needs monitoring and secure handling of the stream key. No host guarantees a gap-free media boundary—the source file still needs to be tested.
