The company also sees physical AI—including humanoid robots—as a potential source of substantial demand by the end of the decade. But the often-cited 200GB-plus figure describes memory in Level 4-and-higher autonomous vehicles; Micron says robots may have comparable requirements, not that every robot arriving in 2030 will contain that much RAM.
What Micron is forecasting for 2027 and 2028
In prepared remarks for Micron’s fiscal Q4 2026 earnings call on September 30, 2026, chairman and CEO Sanjay Mehrotra said, “We expect memory and storage supply-demand conditions to be much tighter in fiscal 2027 and 2028 than they were in 2026.” In its market outlook, Micron also discusses calendar years: it expects both the DRAM and NAND industries to remain supply constrained in calendar 2027 and 2028, even as shipments grow. These are the company’s forecasts, not a guarantee of shortages or a prediction of what a particular device will cost. Micron’s prepared remarks are explicitly forward-looking and say actual results could differ materially.

- DRAM: Micron forecasts industry bit shipments growing in the low-20s percentage range in each of calendar 2027 and 2028, while supply remains constrained.
- NAND: It forecasts industry bit shipments growing approximately in the mid-20s percentage range in each of those calendar years, also while supply remains constrained.
DRAM is the memory commonly used as a computer’s working RAM; NAND is used in storage such as solid-state drives. A constrained market for either does not mean every consumer product will be unavailable, and Micron’s industry outlook does not establish a price or availability forecast for any particular PC, phone or upgrade.

Micron says its new facilities will add output over time, but initial wafer production is not the same as a fully ramped fab. Its current schedule puts wafer output at the Idaho ID1 fab in mid-calendar 2027 and ID2 in late 2028; initial wafer output from its first New York fab is expected in calendar 2030. The company says production takes time to ramp and becomes more meaningful a few quarters after initial output. It expects planned cleanroom availability to help from late 2028 onward, but does not say that these milestones will end constraints on a specific date. Micron’s earnings-call remarks

- Disclaimer: Maximum Speed requires overclocking/PC BIOS adjustments. Maximum speed and performance depend on system components, including motherboard and CPU
- Hand-sorted memory chips ensure high performance with generous overclocking headroom
- VENGEANCE LPX is optimized for wide compatibility with the latest Intel and AMD DDR4 motherboards
- A low-profile height of just 34mm ensures that VENGEANCE LPX even fits in most small-form-factor builds
- A solid aluminum heatspreader efficiently dissipates heat from each module so that they consistently run at high clock speeds
Mehrotra said the company has “no line of sight to when supply and demand will return to balance,” even with additional cleanroom plans and robust demand. That is Micron’s assessment of the market as of September 30, 2026—not proof that a shortage will persist indefinitely.
What the 200GB-plus robot claim actually means
Micron says Level 4-and-higher autonomous vehicles typically have more than 200GB of memory and multiple terabytes of storage. It then says humanoid robots are expected to have comparable memory and storage requirements. The distinction matters: the 200GB-plus figure is tied to the vehicles, while the robot statement is an expectation of comparable requirements. The multiple-terabyte figure refers to storage, not RAM. Micron’s prepared remarks

Micron’s conclusion is that physical AI could become a significant driver of memory and storage demand by the end of the decade. It also says several physical-AI customers are sampling next-generation products. The remarks do not provide a 2030 robot shipment forecast or say that every robot shipping then will contain more than 200GB of RAM. Actual configurations and adoption remain uncertain.
What this means if you are considering a RAM upgrade
Micron’s industry forecast is not a reason by itself to buy memory now. It does not show whether your current computer needs more RAM, whether its memory can be upgraded, or whether a specific kit will fit. Before buying, check your device manufacturer’s specifications for supported memory type, form factor and capacity; many laptops have soldered memory or other upgrade limits. A 32GB DDR5 desktop kit is relevant only if the desktop supports DDR5 and the kit’s configuration is compatible.

- Do not mix memory kits. Memory kits are sold in matched kits that are designed to run together as a set. Mixing memory kits will result in stability issues or system failure.
For most readers, the practical takeaway is to make upgrade decisions based on their current system and workload rather than treating Micron’s forecast as a deadline. The company’s outlook concerns industry-wide supply and demand several years ahead, with considerable uncertainty around both capacity ramp-up and demand.
