In a server-rendered app, evaluate flags through a server SDK, keep privileged credentials and rules on the server, and send the browser only the result it needs. To attribute costs, first identify the provider’s actual billable unit, then map its usage to a service or team.
How do feature flag admin pages work?
The admin interface lets authorized people create and configure flags, organize environments, and manage changes. The application’s SDK—not the admin page—uses flag configuration to evaluate behavior while the application runs. Managed platforms commonly add environment management and change history around that workflow.

OpenFeature provides a vendor-neutral client API for working with feature flags. It does not replace each provider’s administration service, audit controls, or billing model, and it does not make those capabilities interchangeable. OpenFeature’s introduction explains the shared API and related concepts.

How do I safely render feature flags on the server?
Evaluate in trusted server code
For a server-rendered request, use the appropriate server-side SDK to evaluate the flag in server code, then use the result to choose the content or behavior to render. SDK behavior varies by provider. For example, LaunchDarkly documents that its server SDKs fetch and cache full flag rules in memory, while client SDKs do not download the entire ruleset because data sent to an end-user device can be inspected. See LaunchDarkly’s architecture explanation.

Return only what the browser needs
Anything embedded in rendered HTML or a browser bootstrap payload is visible to that user. Send only the intended user-facing evaluation result; do not expose server SDK keys, privileged configuration, private rules, or unrelated evaluation data. This guidance follows from the client-side data exposure described by LaunchDarkly; check the exact behavior and terminology for the SDK you use.
Server-side evaluation does not eliminate every privacy consideration, and a feature flag is not an authorization system. Enforce permissions that protect data or actions independently on the server, even when a flag controls whether a feature appears in the interface.

How should access to the admin page be governed?
Treat the flag console as a high-impact configuration surface. Limit production write access, grant the least privilege needed for each role, protect account access, control API credentials, and preserve change history. Make the project and environment clear before a change; for high-impact changes, consider a confirmation step and a reason or ticket reference.
These controls are not identical across products or plans. LaunchDarkly documents built-in reader, writer, and admin roles, customizable permissions, multifactor authentication, personal API access tokens, and audit-log history. Its Enterprise-Grade Architecture page says, “Prebuilt roles allow you to quickly give users read, write or admin access to features within LaunchDarkly.” That is a product-specific description, not a universal role model. See its architecture page and security overview; availability and granularity can depend on the plan.

How do I attribute feature-flag costs to a service or team?
Start with the contract’s meter
There is no single industry-wide feature-flag billing unit. Record what your provider actually bills for before assigning costs: the unit definition, aggregation period, included allowance, tier or overage behavior, and the source you will use to reconcile usage. Do not estimate an invoice by multiplying an assumed unit.
LaunchDarkly’s materials describe client-side monthly active users (MAU) and server-side service connections as distinct usage concepts. Its analytics documentation describes usage metrics such as client connections, MAUs, experiments, and exports. These are provider-specific concepts; current amounts and entitlements depend on the live pricing page and the account’s plan. See LaunchDarkly’s analytics documentation, current pricing, and billing documentation.

Make ownership and reconciliation explicit
Use a stable service, application, team, or environment tag—or a maintained inventory—to map the provider’s usage data to an accountable owner. Shared infrastructure and duplicate environments can complicate allocation, so document how you handle them rather than implying a false level of precision.

What should I compare when choosing an admin system?
Compare the operational and financial details that affect your application, rather than assuming a shared API means equivalent services:
Quick Recap
- Evaluation and exposure: where evaluation happens and what data reaches a browser.
- SDK and environment support: whether the required server and client environments are supported.
- Access controls: role granularity and safeguards for production changes.
- Auditability: retention, export options, and the detail available about changes.
- Usage and allocation: the billable unit, visibility into usage, and ability to map it to owners.
- Portability: whether a standards-based API can reduce coupling at the client interface, while recognizing that provider-specific admin, audit, and billing capabilities remain distinct.
