A software engineer’s work is more often organized around building and evolving a software application, platform, or system. Both roles can involve substantial coding, user needs, design, testing, and collaboration; the practical difference is usually the scope of ownership and how directly the work is tied to customer delivery.
What distinguishes an FDE from a software engineer?
The clearest example in current job postings is OpenAI’s definition of its FDE work: engineers move from customer discovery and technical scoping through system design, implementation, production rollout, and adoption, then share field learnings with product and research teams. OpenAI describes the team as operating “at the intersection of customer delivery and core platform development.” The Seattle FDE posting offers a concrete example, not a universal definition used by every employer.

Software engineering is not necessarily distant from users. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) says software developers analyze users’ needs, design and develop software, plan how components fit together, test and maintain software, and document it. So “works with customers” versus “writes code” is a false dividing line. A more useful question is whether the role owns delivery of a solution in a particular customer’s environment or primarily develops and maintains a defined software system.
How the work differs in practice
| Dimension | Forward deployed engineer | Software engineer or developer |
|---|---|---|
| Work is organized around | A particular customer’s workflow or business problem in the OpenAI postings reviewed. OpenAI Seattle posting | Software applications or systems designed around user needs; these may be shared products or internal systems. BLS occupational profile |
| Typical engineering scope | Discovery, scoping, architecture, full-stack implementation, evaluation, production rollout, adoption, and feedback. OpenAI Seattle posting | Needs analysis, design, development, planning system components, testing, maintenance, and documentation. BLS occupational profile |
| Customer contact | Direct, ongoing work with customer engineering, operational, or domain teams is explicit in the cited OpenAI roles. OpenAI Seattle posting; OpenAI healthcare posting | Developers may analyze user needs and explain software to nontechnical users; how often they speak directly with customers varies by job. BLS occupational profile |
| Delivery ownership | The cited OpenAI role assigns end-to-end technical delivery across deployments, including rollout and adoption. OpenAI Seattle posting | Developers create and maintain software; the role may also include planning system requirements, scope, and work order. BLS occupational profile |
| What happens to field learning | Deployment observations may inform product and research roadmaps in the cited OpenAI role. OpenAI Seattle posting | Feedback loops also exist in software development; the BLS describes QA work that provides feedback to developers and stakeholders. BLS occupational profile |
| Travel and location | Depends on employer and assignment. The cited OpenAI Seattle and healthcare postings specify hybrid work and travel up to 50%. Seattle posting; healthcare posting | The reviewed BLS profile says most developers and related workers work full time; it does not establish an industry-wide remote-work or travel norm. The job title alone cannot tell you where the boundary lies. An FDE may build reusable platform capabilities, while a software engineer may work directly with customers. Read the responsibilities and find out how the team handles customer-specific code, production support, and handoff.

Does an FDE write production code?
Yes, in the cited OpenAI example, coding is central to the role. Its Seattle posting calls for production-grade frontend and backend coding and describes delivery through stable production. The FDE label does not mean “customer liaison instead of engineer.” It combines implementation with discovery, integration, deployment, and adoption.
Still, titles do not guarantee how much code an individual will write. Before taking a role, ask what code ships, who owns it after launch, and how time is divided between implementation, customer meetings, and operational work.

Which role might suit you?
An FDE role may fit if you want to
- Pair hands-on engineering with customer discovery and technical scoping.
- Move between customer environments and adapt solutions to different workflows.
- Own delivery beyond implementation, including production rollout and adoption.
- Work across customer and internal teams, with the possibility that field learning informs a broader product.
The cited OpenAI posting asks for customer-facing technical experience, production coding, communication across engineering, product, and customer stakeholders, and sound judgment in fast-moving situations. These are features of that posting, not universal entry requirements for FDE work. OpenAI Seattle FDE posting

- Focus on building and evolving a defined application, platform, or system.
- Work on system design, development, testing, maintenance, and documentation.
- Collaborate with users and other teams without necessarily owning delivery inside one customer’s environment.
That distinction is about emphasis, not a rule that software engineers do not talk to users. The BLS description explicitly includes understanding user needs. BLS occupational profile
Questions to ask before accepting either job
- How much of a typical month is hands-on coding, and what code will I ship to production?
- Who sets the scope, and who decides whether a solution is accepted?
- How often will I work directly with customer engineers, operators, or executives?
- Who owns security, reliability, support, and handoff after launch?
- What travel is expected, and how often might location requirements change?
- Are customer-specific integrations maintained as one-off work, or can successful patterns become reusable product capabilities?
- How is success measured: software quality and platform outcomes, customer adoption, workflow impact, or a combination?
Get specific examples rather than relying on a job title. For example, the OpenAI healthcare posting describes customer-specific evaluation and production handoff, while its Seattle posting emphasizes deployment learning that can influence product and model roadmaps. The reviewed OpenAI Seattle posting asks for five or more years of engineering or technical deployment experience that includes customer-facing work, experience delivering complex systems, production-grade frontend and backend coding, and clear communication across engineering, product, and customer stakeholders. Those are qualifications for that opening, not a general FDE standard. OpenAI Seattle FDE posting
The BLS lists analytical, communication, creativity, detail, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills for software developers and related workers. It says developers typically need a bachelor’s degree in computer and information technology or a related field, while noting that employer requirements vary. BLS occupational profile

What salary and job-growth figures can—and cannot—tell you
The BLS reports a median annual wage of $135,980 for U.S. software developers in May 2025. It projects 10% employment growth for software developers from 2025 to 2035, and the same growth rate for the combined group of software developers, quality assurance analysts, and testers. The BLS page was last modified August 27, 2026. These figures describe U.S. occupational data, not a particular offer, and they do not establish how FDE pay or demand compares. No directly comparable FDE wage or employment-growth statistic is established by these sources. Compare an actual offer with the responsibilities, location, travel, and total compensation of that specific job rather than treating an occupational median as an FDE benchmark.
