Fast Startup on Windows: Should You Leave It Enabled?

Leave Windows Fast Startup enabled if your PC works normally and you want quicker startup behavior. Disable it temporarily to troubleshoot shutdown or hibernation problems, or check Wake-on-LAN requirements.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a Windows PC that works normally, leaving Fast Startup enabled is a sensible default if you want the feature’s quicker-startup behavior. Turn it off temporarily when shutdown or hibernation is failing, when you need to test a full shutdown, or when checking Wake-on-LAN behavior. Use Restart when you need a full boot cycle; it does not use Fast Startup.

Microsoft documents how Fast Startup works and the situations where it can matter, but does not give a universal figure for time saved or identify one best setting for every PC.

What Fast Startup does

Fast Startup is a hybrid shutdown, not a conventional full shutdown. Windows logs off the user, then saves the kernel session and device-driver state to the hibernation file. On the next startup, it reloads that saved system state instead of following the same full initialization path. Microsoft describes it as “a type of shutdown that uses a hibernation file to speed up the subsequent boot.” Microsoft Learn: System power states

The user’s open session is not saved as it is with Hibernate. The intended benefit is a faster subsequent startup, but Microsoft’s cited documentation does not establish a general number of seconds or percentage gained. The result depends on the PC.

Fast Startup, Restart, Sleep, and Hibernate compared

Action What happens When it fits
Shut down with Fast Startup Windows logs off the user and saves kernel and driver state in the hibernation file for a later boot. Routine shutdown when the PC works normally and you prefer the feature’s quicker-startup behavior.
Restart Windows proceeds through a full boot cycle rather than using Fast Startup. When you need a full boot, such as for troubleshooting or completing updates.
Sleep The PC uses very little power and resumes quickly. A short break from using the PC.
Hibernate The PC uses less power than Sleep and restores the prior user session. Availability varies by PC. A longer time away, particularly when you want to return to the prior session.

Microsoft distinguishes these user-facing power options in its Windows 10 and Windows 11 guidance. Connected-device behavior and available power features can vary; devices may need reconnecting or current drivers after Sleep or Hibernate.

When to leave Fast Startup on or turn it off

Leave it on for normal use

If shutdown, startup, and connected devices behave as expected, leaving the setting enabled is reasonable. Fast Startup is designed to speed up the next boot after shutdown. There is no evidence in Microsoft’s cited documentation for a universal speed gain that applies to every PC.

Turn it off while troubleshooting shutdown or hibernation

Try disabling Fast Startup if shutdown or hibernation fails. Microsoft has documented a troubleshooting case involving Fast Startup and shutdown or hibernation failures, specifically for Windows 10 and Windows 8.1; that article does not establish that the same failure affects every current Windows build or PC. Microsoft Support: Fast startup causes hibernation or shutdown to fail

Use Restart for a full boot cycle

If the goal is simply to make Windows perform a full boot cycle, choose Restart rather than Shut down and turning the setting off. Microsoft says Restart continues through a full boot cycle; Fast Startup applies to the shutdown transition.

Check Wake-on-LAN requirements

If you rely on Wake-on-LAN, check the behavior required by your device before making hybrid shutdown your routine power state. Microsoft’s technical guidance says hybrid shutdown and hibernation both use S4, but Windows handles Wake-on-LAN differently for the two transitions. Microsoft Learn: Wake on LAN behavior

How to change the setting

  1. Open Control Panel, then go to Power Options.
  2. Open the power-button or system-settings page. Microsoft’s documented path is Control Panel > All Control Panel Items > Power Options > System Settings; labels can vary by Windows version or device configuration.
  3. If the options are unavailable, choose Change settings that are currently unavailable, if that link appears.
  4. Change Turn on fast startup, then save the changes.

Microsoft documents the setting’s location in its troubleshooting guidance. If the checkbox is absent, that alone does not prove there is a defect; hibernation support and device configuration can affect whether the option is available. The same Microsoft page documents shutdown.exe /hybrid as a way to prepare a shutdown for Fast Startup, but most users can change the setting through Power Options.

Do not confuse Windows Fast Startup with firmware Fast Boot

This guidance is about the Windows setting named Turn on fast startup. A similarly named option in a motherboard’s UEFI or BIOS is a separate firmware feature; these Microsoft sources do not establish how that setting behaves. Check the exact setting and the PC model before changing a firmware option.
