1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteTo survive your first winters in Farthest Frontier, plan food and firewood before cold weather, store food where it spoils more slowly, and expand only as your labor and resources allow. There is no universal stockpile target: population, harvests, and disruptions all affect what your town needs. Check the season and resource summaries regularly, then use map overlays to choose sites for farms, homes, and resource buildings.
What should you build and plan first?
Start by reading the information the game already gives you. The top display shows your population, current season, and resources; the season appears in its middle section. Crate Entertainment’s Basics guide stresses planning ahead for winter so villagers can endure winter storms.

Treat winter stores as a buffer, not a fixed quota. The official Resources guide recommends a steady food supply with reserves for winter and hardships such as raids or disease outbreaks. How much is enough depends on your settlement, so watch the resource summary and adjust production rather than aiming for an unsupported universal number.
- Check the current season and your food and material supplies as conditions change.
- Plan enough production to cover consumption and build a reserve before winter.
- Leave room for the storage and production buildings your settlement may need as it grows.
How do you keep food from spoiling?
Food naturally spoils over time, so a large harvest is not automatically a lasting reserve. The in-game food tooltip warns about spoilage, and the Resource Summary provides more detail about when food is expected to spoil, according to the official Food guide. Use that information when deciding whether to expand production or improve storage.

| Building | Best use | Practical note |
|---|---|---|
| Root Cellar | Food storage | The official Resources guide says food lasts longer here than in a Storehouse; barrels improve preservation further. Villagers visit Root Cellars to deposit and collect food. |
| Storehouse | General goods | Use it for goods that are not being stored as food. |
| Stockyard | Raw construction materials | Used for materials such as logs, stone, and planks. |
Choose storage according to what it holds and where it will be useful to the people handling those goods. Keeping food in a Root Cellar is a preservation choice; putting construction materials in a Stockyard keeps the storage role appropriate to the material.
How should you plan food production and crop rotations?
Farms need attention over time, rather than one crop choice that works everywhere. Crate Entertainment’s Major Features page describes 12 food crops with different characteristics and crop rotations that can maintain fertility and help avoid heat damage, frost damage, and disease accumulation. Inspect each field’s fertility and the characteristics of available crops, then adjust its rotation as conditions change.

- CLASSIC TILE PLACEMENT: Draw and place landscape tiles to build cities, roads, fields, and monasteries, then deploy meeples as knights, farmers, and monks to claim features and score points.
- STRATEGY FOR ADULTS AND FAMILIES: Carcassonne pairs intuitive rules with meaningful decisions, making it accessible for ages 7+ while still engaging experienced adult board gamers.
- REPLAYABLE MEDIEVAL ADVENTURE: Randomized tile draws create a different landscape every game, bringing fresh puzzles and competitive fun to family game night and casual group play.
- TWO TO FIVE PLAYERS: Built for 2-5 players with an average 35-minute playtime, Carcassonne fits weeknight sessions at home, family gatherings on vacation, and adult board game evenings.
- INCLUDES MINI-EXPANSIONS: The base game comes with The Abbot and The River mini-expansions in the box, adding variety to the classic Carcassonne board game experience from the start.
Fields can be improved over time by removing weeds and rocks, increasing fertility, and adjusting the soil mixture. The official material does not establish a universal rotation, numeric crop calendar, or exact frost dates, so use field information and in-game conditions instead of following a supposedly optimal fixed schedule.
Farming is not the only source of food. The Food guide notes that Arborists can plant apples, peaches, and pears within their work areas. Milk does not last long in storage, while cheesemaking can turn dairy into cheese. These are options to consider as your settlement develops, not production chains you must rush at the start.

Where should you place farms, houses, and resource buildings?
Use overlays to compare possible sites before committing space and labor. The official Overlays guide describes overlays for scanning locations for crops, homes, mines, and other uses. The Desirability overlay, opened with the default G hotkey, helps identify desirable shelter areas. Resource deposits appear when you place mines and pits; Arborist placement has its own fertility requirements and overlay.
- Check fertility information when choosing sites for fields or Arborists.
- Use desirability information to assess potential shelter locations.
- Look for resource deposits while placing mines and pits.
- Consider where villagers will need to carry goods to and from storage.
A flexible layout is more useful than copying a rigid blueprint: leave space for housing and future production, check the relevant overlays, and put storage where it serves the goods and work around it. This is practical planning based on the game’s systems, not a guaranteed optimal map layout.

How should you expand without wasting labor?
New buildings compete for workers and resources. The official Buildings guide says worker assignments can be adjusted according to town needs, available resources, and population. A Work Camp’s focus can also be assigned among resources. If a building is not contributing enough to your current priorities, review its staffing and focus rather than treating its initial assignment as permanent.
