A moneyline picks the outright winner; a spread adjusts the result by a points handicap; and a total asks whether both teams’ combined score will be over or under a number. The odds attached to a bet determine its potential payout, separately from the market’s win condition.
How does a moneyline bet work?
A moneyline bet is a pick of the team or player to win outright. The margin does not matter. In a sport or event where a tie is possible, the sportsbook may offer a draw as a separate outcome; check how that market settles.

In American odds, a negative number usually identifies the favorite and a positive number usually identifies the underdog. The sign and number describe the price, not a handicap:

What does it mean to cover the spread?
A point spread gives one side a points handicap. The favorite’s spread is commonly negative, while the underdog’s is positive. To settle the bet, the final score is considered with that handicap applied.
- A favorite at −1.5 must win by at least two points to cover.
- An underdog at +1.5 covers by winning outright or losing by one point.
The spread number and its odds are different things. For example, −1.5 is the handicap; −110 is an example of the price attached to a selection at that handicap. The price determines the potential payout, while the handicap determines which results win.

On a whole-number spread, a result exactly on the line may be a push, meaning the stake is returned rather than paid as a win or loss. A half-point line cannot land exactly on that number. Settlement details can vary by sport and operator, so check the sportsbook’s rules.

A total, also called an over/under, is a bet on whether the combined score of both sides will finish above or below the sportsbook’s posted number. It does not ask which side wins. At a total of 165.5, for example, the combined score must be at least 166 for the over to win, or 165 or lower for the under to win.
Rank #3
A whole-number total can push if the final combined score equals the line, subject to the operator’s rules. A half-point total avoids an exact-score push on that line.
How do American odds translate into profit and payout?
American odds are common on U.S. sportsbook displays. With negative odds, the number indicates how much must be risked to earn $100 profit. With positive odds, it indicates the profit on a $100 stake. Decimal odds instead show total return per unit staked, including the original stake; fractional odds show profit relative to the stake.
Rank #4
For a negative price, use the absolute value of the odds as A: profit = stake × 100/A. For a positive price +A: profit = stake × A/100. Total payout on a winning bet is the profit plus the returned stake.
For example, a $20 stake at −125 earns $16 profit, for a total payout of $36 if it wins. BetMGM’s odds calculator converts −125 to a raw implied probability of 55.56% (BetMGM odds converter, undated educational page accessed in 2026).

The general raw implied-probability conversions for American odds are:
- Positive +A: 100 ÷ (A + 100).
- Negative −A: A ÷ (A + 100), using the absolute value of the negative odds as A.
This is a conversion of the quoted price, not a guarantee that an outcome will occur or a margin-adjusted estimate of its true likelihood. A sportsbook’s margin can make the raw implied probabilities for both sides of a two-way market add up to more than 100%.

A team can win the game but lose a spread bet if it fails to cover; an underdog can lose the game but win its spread bet by covering. A total is independent of which team wins: it settles on the combined score. Before comparing prices, check:

What should you check before placing a bet?
Sportsbook availability, licensing, and settlement rules vary by location and operator. Verify that the operator is licensed where you are and read its current rules for the specific sport and market, including how ties, pushes, and any market-specific exceptions are handled. Local regulators are the appropriate source for jurisdiction-specific requirements.
Odds describe potential returns; they do not make results predictable or wagering a dependable source of income. The Responsible Gambling Council recommends setting time and spending budgets, using available limits, taking breaks, avoiding chasing losses, and stopping if gambling becomes stressful or stops being enjoyable. Its 2025 event-specific survey found that 70% of surveyed sportsbook users planning to bet on a Big Game said they would use at least one responsible-gambling feature; that figure applies to that survey context, not to all bettors. See the Council’s safer-play guidance and problem gambling help for information and support.
