Fantasy Skies Modpack Guide: Quest Progression and Server Tips

A practical Fantasy Skies guide covering the quest-led dimension route, starting-island priorities, combat and automation systems, server installation, troubleshooting, and what the project does not publish about RAM.

Fantasy Skies is a Minecraft 1.20.1 Forge skyblock modpack built around quest-led travel through multiple dimensions. You begin on a small void-island tree, establish renewable resources, follow the quest book into new worlds, and eventually work toward returning to the overworld. The most reliable way to progress is to treat each quest chapter as a readiness check rather than rushing through portals: make your current island sustainable, stock combat and building supplies, then enter the next dimension with a recovery plan.

What Fantasy Skies includes

The project is by knoxhack. The latest listed release is Fantasy Skies 1.5.0, published January 19, 2024, for Minecraft 1.20.1 on Forge. The same listing includes a matching 1.20 server-pack file. The pack advertises more than 450 mods and more than 250 quests, so it is substantially broader than a small, single-theme skyblock experience.

Its story premise is that the Leviathan has trapped you in a void dimension. A central-island tree is your starting point; from there you gather materials, unlock other dimensions, and pursue a route back to the overworld to rebuild civilization. The project description specifically calls out dimension quest progression, custom loot-crate rewards, lunar events, and enhanced combat mechanics.

Published detail What it means for a player
Minecraft 1.20.1 Forge Every client and server installation must use the same Minecraft and Forge generation as the pack release.
Fantasy Skies 1.5.0 (January 19, 2024 listing) Use this exact pack version when following a world or joining a server built from that release.
More than 450 mods Expect many overlapping systems, a larger memory and troubleshooting surface, and more than one way to obtain common resources.
250+ quests The quest book is the practical progression map; reading objectives in order is safer than guessing a dimension route.
Separate 1.20 server pack A multiplayer host should install the dedicated server package that corresponds to the client release.

How progression works

Fantasy Skies confirms that progression is both quest-based and dimension-based. The listing does not publish the complete quest tree or an authoritative, fixed order for every dimension. That distinction matters: an online checklist that presents one portal sequence as mandatory may describe a particular play-through, an older build, or a player preference rather than the pack’s official route.

#1 Best Overall
Minecraft | Java & Bedrock Deluxe Collection | Windows Digital Code
  • DELUXE COLLECTION — Includes Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition, three Bedrock add-ons, three exclusive Character Creator items, and 700 Minecoins.
  • CREATE YOUR WORLD — Build whatever you imagine in an infinite world that’s unique in every playthrough.
  • EXPLORE AND CRAFT — Discover biomes, resources, and mobs, then craft your way through a sandbox world filled with surprises.
  • SURVIVE THE ADVENTURE — Face mysterious foes, travel across exciting landscapes, and venture into perilous dimensions.
  • PLAY TOGETHER — Play cross-platform with friends in Bedrock Edition on console, mobile, and PC, or join community servers in Java Edition on PC, Mac, and Linux. Online console multiplayer requires a platform-specific subscription (sold separately).

Use the quest book as your source of truth

  • Open the quest book before crafting a large machine or travelling. Chapter text and prerequisites show which objectives are currently intended.
  • Read reward descriptions before claiming items. A reward may be more valuable as a progression ingredient than as an immediate upgrade.
  • When a chapter points to a dimension, treat its tasks as a preparation list. Finish collection, crafting, and equipment objectives on your home island where failure is easier to recover from.
  • Keep completed-quest screenshots or notes if several people share a server. This helps the group coordinate unlocks without repeatedly checking the same pages.

What the dimension sequence does and does not tell you

The pack’s goal is to move from the starting void through several dimensions and ultimately return to the overworld. Named content such as The Aether is included in the mod list, but the listing does not establish that it is the first destination, the final destination, or even a mandatory stop in every quest branch. Follow the portal and chapter requirements shown in your installed quest book rather than importing an assumed order.

A practical readiness test for any new dimension

  • Recovery: Leave a safe bed or respawn method, a spare set of basic tools, and a way to replace food at your home base.
  • Supplies: Carry building blocks, light sources, food, containers, and the ingredients needed for the quest objectives you intend to complete.
  • Combat: Bring armor and a weapon you can replace. Enhanced combat mechanics and hostile creatures can make an unfamiliar dimension more dangerous than the island.
  • Navigation: Mark the portal and your route. A temporary platform, signs, or a waypoint system prevents an expensive return trip.
  • Storage: Reserve space for unfamiliar drops. Loot crates, creatures, and dimension-specific resources can fill an inventory quickly.
  • Exit plan: Confirm how you return before entering. Do not make a one-way expedition with your only tools and food.

What to do first on the starting island

The opening island is not just a tutorial area; it is the safest place to build the repeatable resource base that supports every later expedition. The exact blocks and recipes depend on which quest chapter is active, so the sequence below is organized by purpose rather than by an unverified recipe list.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Survey the island and secure the tree. Identify the central tree, the edge of the platform, any initial chests, and the locations where you can expand without dropping items into the void. Add a temporary rail or wall around exposed edges before working quickly.
  2. Collect the first renewable materials. Prioritize the resources needed to keep producing wood, food, basic building blocks, and light. If a quest awards a generator, seed, mob resource, or similar repeatable source, protect it and avoid spending the entire supply on decorative construction.
  3. Create a separated work area. Keep crafting, storage, machines, and mob-related systems in distinct sections. Separation makes later automation upgrades less disruptive and reduces the chance that one accident destroys every important block.
  4. Read the opening quest chapter completely. Claim rewards as soon as you understand what they unlock, but do not consume unique items until you have checked whether another objective asks for them. The quest book is more useful when you treat it as a dependency map, not a list of unrelated tasks.
  5. Build an expandable platform. Leave clear space for machines, power or magic infrastructure, farms, and a portal area. Expanding in a planned grid is safer than rebuilding the entire island when the next chapter introduces a large multiblock structure.
  6. Establish a reserve chest. Store backup tools, food, blocks, and quest materials separately from your active inventory. A failed expedition should cost time, not erase the only copy of a critical ingredient.
  7. Prepare the first dimension trip only after the chapter permits it. Assemble the listed equipment, mark your portal, and take a small test journey first. Return with samples before committing to a permanent outpost.

Choosing between the pack’s major systems

Fantasy Skies combines many mod families rather than requiring one linear technology tree. The following examples are named in the project feature list; they illustrate the breadth of the pack, not a claim that each is mandatory at a particular quest stage.

System area Examples named by the project How to use the category while progressing
Magic and spellcraft Ars Nouveau, Blood Magic, Primal Magick, Solar Craft Choose the magic branch that satisfies the current quest objective and keep its ingredients organized separately from general building materials.
Automation and resource generation Create, Resource Chickens Use repeatable production to replace manual gathering before a dimension expedition; automate the resources you spend most often rather than every possible item.
Combat and hostile content Epic Samurai’s, Epic Empires, Grimoire of Gaia Upgrade survivability in response to the enemies you actually meet. Test unfamiliar weapons and armor in a controlled area before taking them through a portal.
Creatures, mounts, and exploration Doggy Talents Next, Dragon Mounts: Legacy, The Aether, Mystical Mounts Use travel and companion features to support exploration, while keeping a conventional escape route in case a mount or pet cannot follow a dimension transition.
Visuals and client performance Embeddium, Iris 1.6, OptiFine CEM+CIT features, Better Mob Animations Enable visual enhancements one at a time. Keeping a known-good profile makes it easier to identify a rendering conflict after an update.

Do not overbuild before the next unlock

With hundreds of mods installed, it is easy to spend hours perfecting a machine room that the next chapter makes obsolete. Build only enough infrastructure to make current quests repeatable, then reserve materials for the portal, equipment, and dimension-specific tasks shown by the book. A compact, modular base is more valuable than an elaborate early design that cannot be expanded.

Exploration, combat, and event planning

Custom loot crates, lunar events, enhanced combat mechanics, mounts, and leveling mystic pets add optional activity around the core quest route. They can be useful sources of gear or materials, but they also create reasons to leave a safe platform before your base is ready.

Loot crates

Keep crate rewards in a labelled storage area until you know which items are common and which are progression-sensitive. Open them in a secure room rather than on a narrow island edge, and record unusual rewards so multiplayer teammates do not duplicate a scarce item.

  • SURVIVAL ADVENTURES — Face mysterious foes, travel across varied landscapes, and venture into perilous dimensions.

  • COMMUNITY PLAY — Connect with players on community servers, or subscribe to Realms Plus (sold separately) to play with up to 10 friends on a private server.

Lunar events

Treat an event as a timed risk window. Light and protect the home platform, move valuable items into secure storage, and postpone a portal trip if the event makes the destination harder to navigate. The project listing confirms the events exist but does not publish their schedule or exact mechanics, so use the in-game event information as the authority.

Mounts and pets

Mystical Mounts and mystic pets with leveling can improve travel or combat, but do not make them your only safety plan. Keep ordinary blocks, food, and a weapon in your inventory, and verify that a companion can cross the relevant portal before transporting rare gear.

How to host a Fantasy Skies server

The compatibility rule is simple: build the server from the dedicated server-pack file that matches the 1.20.1 Forge client release you intend to use. Mixing a different pack revision, Minecraft version, or Forge loader is the most avoidable source of connection and world-loading errors.

  • Cross platform play for up to five players between Pocket Edition and Windows 10
  • Revamped touch controls, controller support, and a controller mapping screen

  1. Select the client release. Decide whether the server will run Fantasy Skies 1.5.0, the latest release listed for the project. Every player should install that same pack version.
  2. Download the matching server pack. Use the dedicated 1.20 server-pack download listed with the project release, not a client export copied from an unrelated instance.
  3. Install it in a clean directory. Keep the server files separate from other modded worlds. This makes backups, rollbacks, and testing safer.
  4. Run the supplied Forge installation or startup files. Follow the files included with the server pack and accept Minecraft’s EULA in the required configuration file. Do not add extra mods until the unmodified pack starts successfully.
  5. Test a disposable world. Confirm that the server reaches a ready state, the starting island generates correctly, quests open, dimensions can be entered, and players can reconnect after a restart. This test is a precaution, not a claim that the project has been independently benchmarked.
  6. Match client configuration. Give players the same Minecraft version, Forge version, Fantasy Skies release, and required pack files. A client that loads single-player successfully can still fail to join if one mod or configuration differs.
  7. Back up before inviting players. Stop the server cleanly, copy the world and configuration directories, and label each backup with its date. Keep at least one copy outside the live server directory.
  8. Add administration controls. Use a whitelist for a private group, document who can change configuration, and review the console after restarts. Record the exact pack version in your server welcome message.

How much RAM does Fantasy Skies need?

There is no authoritative RAM requirement published in the project listing. Because the pack contains more than 450 mods and can be used with shaders, enhanced animations, and additional dimensions, the correct allocation depends on the number of players, render settings, world activity, and whether you are measuring a client or a dedicated server. A single number presented as “the requirement” would be misleading.

A safer way to size memory

  • Start with the memory guidance shown by the launcher or hosting panel for the installed pack and leave operating-system headroom rather than assigning all physical memory to Java.
  • Test the exact pack version in a fresh world, then repeat with your expected view distance, shaders, and number of players.
  • Watch for out-of-memory exits, long garbage-collection pauses, chunk-generation stalls, and a server that falls behind during exploration. These symptoms indicate that you should review allocation and workload together, not simply keep increasing RAM.
  • Change one variable at a time: memory allocation, view distance, simulation distance, shaders, animation settings, or active machines. Otherwise you will not know which change fixed or caused the problem.
  • Keep a no-shader client profile for troubleshooting. Iris 1.6 and other visual features can be disabled temporarily without changing the underlying quest world.

Client performance controls

Embeddium, Iris 1.6, OptiFine CEM+CIT features, and Better Mob Animations are listed among the pack’s visual options. Enable them incrementally, save a working profile, and remove only the suspected component when diagnosing a crash. A lower render distance and disabled shaders are useful diagnostic steps even when the final profile will use higher settings.

Common problems and recovery steps

Symptom Likely check Recovery action
Client cannot connect Compare Minecraft, Forge, pack, and mod versions on both sides. Reinstall the matching client or rebuild the server from the corresponding server pack; do not copy random replacement mods.
World fails during startup Look for an incomplete first launch, altered configuration, or a missing server-pack file. Restore the clean server-pack directory, launch a disposable world, and reapply changes one at a time.
Severe lag during exploration Check chunk generation, active machines, event activity, and visual settings. Pause automation temporarily, lower render and simulation distances, disable shaders, and test again before changing the world.
Lost items after a portal trip Determine whether the destination was one-way, unsafe, or simply unmarked. Restore from the latest backup if appropriate, then establish a marked portal, reserve chest, and return route before the next expedition.
Quest appears impossible Check whether a prerequisite chapter, dimension, or reward has been completed. Read the entire quest branch and verify the installed pack version; avoid assuming a guide for another release uses the same recipe or order.

A repeatable multiplayer routine

For a small group, assign responsibilities without locking anyone into a permanent class. One player can maintain renewable resources, another can map dimensions, and another can test magic or automation. Share quest rewards deliberately, keep a public storage area for common materials, and place rare progression items in a labelled communal chest. Before a major portal trip, announce the destination, expected objectives, return time, and who carries the backup supplies.

When updating the pack, copy the world first and test the new files in isolation. Do not update a live dimension while players are online and exploring it. If the update changes quests or recipes, record the old version in the server message so returning players know which guide or backup applies.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bottom line

Approach Fantasy Skies as a quest-driven expedition pack, not as a race through a predetermined portal list. Secure renewable production on the starting island, let the installed quest book determine the next dimension, and carry enough equipment to recover from a failed trip. For multiplayer, use the matching 1.20.1 Forge server pack, test a disposable world, and verify any host’s current commercial terms yourself. The project publishes no definitive RAM figure, so size memory from observed client and server behavior rather than an invented minimum.
