The right choice is determined less by a feature checklist than by your catalog’s data model and who will operate payments, tax, shipping, updates, backups and security. This guide compares those four paths, explains their real operating costs and gives a launch process that avoids an expensive plugin switch later.

Quick picks: which WordPress shop plugin fits your store?
| Plugin or integration | Best for | What it handles well | Important trade-off | Price evidence |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| WooCommerce | Physical products and mixed physical/digital catalogs | Variations, custom configurations, inventory, shipping, instant downloads and affiliate items | You assemble and maintain payment, shipping, tax, security, analytics and performance components | Core plugin is free; the WordPress.org directory listed 7+ million active installations and version 11.2.1 dated 2026-10-09 |
| Easy Digital Downloads | Software, ebooks, music, photography, templates and other files | Digital delivery, download protection, licensing and customer access | Not a natural fit for warehouse operations, shipping zones or complex physical fulfillment | An independent comparison listed plans beginning at an indicative $99.50 per year; verify current plans |
| MemberPress | Memberships, subscriptions, lessons and gated resources | Access rules, recurring billing, protected content and member accounts | Its access model can be cumbersome when you need a conventional product catalog and fulfillment workflow | An independent comparison listed an indicative $199.50 per year; treat that figure as dated |
| Shopify for WordPress | Content-first WordPress sites that want managed commerce operations | Shopify-hosted checkout and commerce administration embedded into a WordPress site | Recurring Shopify fees and a split WordPress/Shopify operating model reduce WordPress-native control | Shopify said the plugin is free to download and requires a plan starting at $5 per month in its 2025 comparison; regional terms can change |
“Free” describes only a software license. Every option can still incur payment processing, tax services, email delivery, hosting, backups, security, support, storage, extensions or transaction charges.
Start with the business model, not the theme
Write down what a customer actually buys before choosing a theme or page builder. A shippable item, a file, and ongoing access have different order states, refunds, fulfillment events and customer permissions. Picking a plugin that matches those objects prevents workarounds later.

Physical or mixed catalog
Use WooCommerce when you need stock quantities, product variations, shipping addresses, zones, rates, local pickup or a combination of physical and digital items. It can also represent custom configurations, instant downloads and affiliate items, so one store can accommodate more than one fulfillment method.
Digital downloads
Use Easy Digital Downloads when delivery is the product. Its digital-first workflow puts protected file links, download limits, license keys and a customer’s access history at the center. A warehouse catalog with carriers, package dimensions and complex shipping rules is outside its natural design.
Recurring access
Use MemberPress when the transaction grants permission: a paid community, subscription library, course or members-only resource. Access rules, renewals, failed-payment handling and account status matter more than a shipping cart in this model.

WooCommerce: the broad default for a conventional store
WooCommerce is open-source ecommerce software for WordPress. The WordPress.org listing documents support for physical and digital goods, product variations, custom configurations, instant downloads and affiliate items. In 2026 it reported more than 7 million active installations, and the listing showed version 11.2.1 dated 2026-10-09. Those figures describe the directory snapshot, not a guarantee of compatibility with every host or extension.

Why it is usually the starting point
- One catalog can mix fulfillment types. A physical product, a downloadable manual and an affiliate listing can coexist in the same store.
- Product data is extensible. Variations and custom configurations cover sizes, colors, bundles and configurable orders without inventing a separate system.
- You retain WordPress ownership. Store content and order data live in your WordPress installation and can be backed up or migrated with the rest of the site, subject to the extensions you add.
- The ecosystem covers unusual requirements. Payment gateways, shipping carriers, tax calculations, subscriptions, bookings, marketplaces and analytics are commonly supplied as extensions.
The operational cost of breadth
The core plugin being free does not make a WooCommerce store cost-free. You must select and maintain payment gateways, shipping and tax tools, transactional email, security controls, backups, analytics and performance infrastructure. Each extension introduces another update schedule, support policy and possible compatibility issue. A managed host may reduce routine administration but adds a recurring hosting charge.
When WooCommerce is a poor fit
If every sale is a protected file, the extra inventory and shipping concepts can make administration noisier than necessary; start with Easy Digital Downloads instead. If the value is permission to view content, MemberPress’s access rules are usually a closer match. If your team does not want to operate WordPress updates, backups and the commerce stack, a hosted backend may be worth the recurring cost of Shopify for WordPress.

Easy Digital Downloads: a digital-first checkout and delivery model
Easy Digital Downloads is designed for downloadable products. Comparison guidance identifies software, ebooks, music, photography and templates as typical use cases. Delivery, download protection, licensing and customer access are the core workflow, not add-ons to a warehouse system.
What to verify before choosing it
- File protection: confirm that links are not publicly guessable and that expiration or download limits match your piracy and support policy.
- Licensing: if you sell software, check whether the extension you need issues keys, records activations and supports renewals.
- Large-file delivery: price storage, bandwidth and an appropriate delivery service separately from the plugin.
- Customer records: decide how buyers retrieve past purchases, replace a lost file and receive updated versions.
An independent comparison listed plans beginning at an indicative $99.50 per year. That is a dated comparison figure, not a current quote; confirm the vendor’s plan names, included extensions, renewal pricing and regional taxes before budgeting.
Why it should not be your warehouse platform
A digital-first system can represent physical products through additional tooling, but that reverses its strengths. If you need carrier rates, package-level fulfillment, partial shipments, stock purchasing or multiple warehouses, select a platform whose primary order model includes those operations.

MemberPress: when access is the product
MemberPress is aimed at memberships, subscriptions, lessons and gated resources. Instead of treating an order as a request to ship an item, it treats payment as a change in the customer’s permissions. That makes it useful for a course library, paid community, research archive or recurring resource.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

- What happens immediately after a failed renewal, cancellation or chargeback?
- Can a member pause, upgrade, downgrade and resume without creating duplicate access?
- How will you handle taxes, invoices, refunds and regional payment methods?
- What is the process for exporting members and their entitlement history if you migrate?
An independent comparison listed an indicative price of $199.50 per year. Treat that as a dated reference and confirm current plans, included modules, renewal terms and payment-gateway support before purchase.
When a conventional cart is better
If most customers buy one-off physical goods and rarely log in after delivery, an access-control system adds unnecessary account and entitlement administration. WooCommerce can still sell subscriptions with extensions, but MemberPress is generally the cleaner model when protected content and recurring permission are the primary deliverable.
Shopify for WordPress: managed commerce alongside WordPress content
Shopify’s WordPress integration lets a WordPress site remain the publishing and presentation layer while Shopify operates the commerce backend and checkout. Shopify said in a 2025 comparison that the plugin is free to download and requires a Shopify plan starting at $5 per month. That starting price is regional and time-sensitive; plans, payment terms, transaction charges and included features can change.
Why teams choose the split model
- Less commerce infrastructure to operate: checkout and core commerce administration are hosted rather than assembled from WordPress components.
- Clear division of responsibilities: WordPress handles articles and pages; Shopify handles products, orders and checkout.
- Useful for content-led businesses: a magazine, creator site or publication can add commerce without turning the entire WordPress installation into the operational system of record.
What you give up
Your staff must work across two dashboards and understand which system owns each piece of data. Theme customization, checkout control, reporting, customer accounts and extensions follow Shopify’s rules rather than being entirely WordPress-native. You also add a recurring platform fee and must evaluate payment and transaction terms for your country. Export products, customers, orders and content before launch so a future change is a planned migration rather than an emergency rebuild.

Secondary candidates worth investigating
WordPress.org’s ecommerce category also surfaces products such as SureCart and specialized payment or store-editor plugins. They may be relevant for donations, simplified checkout or a light subscription catalog, but the available comparison evidence does not establish enough primary detail to rank them against the four main choices here. Evaluate them only after documenting your requirements and checking current compatibility, export options, support policy, payment coverage and total recurring cost.
Compare the decisions that affect day-to-day operations
| Decision | WooCommerce | Easy Digital Downloads | MemberPress | Shopify for WordPress |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Catalog object | Physical, digital, variations and mixed orders | Downloadable files and licenses | Membership levels and entitlements | Products managed in Shopify, presented through WordPress |
| Shipping and inventory | Strongest fit; configure extensions and carriers | Not its natural focus | Usually unnecessary | Managed in Shopify; confirm country-specific features |
| Download protection | Available through core features and extensions | Central workflow | Useful for protected member resources | Depends on Shopify apps and integration behavior |
| Subscriptions and access rules | Usually extension-led | Digital renewals and licenses require the right add-ons | Core reason to choose it | Available through Shopify plans/apps; WordPress access may remain separate |
| Checkout ownership | WordPress and selected gateway extensions | WordPress and selected gateway extensions | WordPress and selected gateway extensions | Shopify-hosted checkout |
| Maintenance responsibility | You or your host operate WordPress, extensions, backups and security | You or your host operate WordPress and digital extensions | You or your host operate WordPress and membership extensions | WordPress still needs care; Shopify operates the commerce backend |
| Data and migration | WordPress database and extension-dependent exports | WordPress database and file/license exports | Member and entitlement exports depend on configuration | Data is split between WordPress and Shopify |
Budget the whole operating stack
Make a 12-month budget before installing anything. Record one-time configuration work separately from recurring charges, and price renewals rather than introductory offers.
| Cost category | What to include | Why it changes the choice |
|---|---|---|
| Platform or plugin | Core license, paid extensions, annual renewals or Shopify plan | Digital and membership products often require paid modules; Shopify adds a platform subscription |
| Payments | Gateway fees, processor rates, currency conversion and possible transaction charges | Country, card mix and average order value can outweigh the plugin price |
| Hosting and storage | CPU, memory, database, object storage, bandwidth and staging | Large catalogs, high traffic and file delivery need more capacity |
| Operations | Backups, security monitoring, updates, malware response and support | A “free” core requires more owner time; managed services trade money for reduced administration |
| Tax and compliance | Tax calculation, invoices, privacy controls, cookie consent and retention policies | Requirements vary by customer location and product type |
| Email and reliability | Transactional email, deliverability monitoring, uptime and recovery procedures | Failed receipts or download messages become support incidents and lost sales |
Do not compare a plugin’s headline price with another platform’s plan in isolation. Compare the complete stack required to accept an order, fulfill it, refund it and recover after an outage.
Launch checklist: install in the order that prevents rework
- Define the catalog and fulfillment. Classify every item as physical, digital, subscription or mixed. Document variations, bundles, shipping destinations, download rules and access levels.
- Select the data model before the theme. Install the plugin that represents those items natively. A theme can be replaced; rebuilding orders, entitlements or download URLs is harder.
- Confirm country and payment requirements. List supported gateways, settlement currencies, payment methods, refunds, chargebacks, tax registration and invoice rules for every target market.
- Map delivery. For physical goods, define shipping zones, rates, packaging, pickup and partial fulfillment. For files, define storage, protection, limits, version updates and customer recovery. For memberships, define levels, grace periods and cancellation behavior.
- Price infrastructure together. Add hosting, storage, backups, security, staging, transactional email, paid extensions and support to the budget. Check renewal prices and resource limits.
- Build on staging. Use a non-production copy to configure products, taxes, coupons, emails, analytics and integrations. Keep credentials and test payment keys separate from live accounts.
- Run complete checkout tests. Test desktop and mobile layouts, successful and failed payments, tax rounding, coupons, refunds, abandoned carts, shipping rates, download expiration, membership renewal, cancellation and account recovery.
- Check compatibility and updates. Confirm the plugin’s declared WordPress and PHP requirements, extension compatibility, update cadence and support policy. Schedule backups before every major update.
- Document recovery and export. Record where products, orders, customers, files and memberships are stored; export representative records; and write the restore procedure before accepting real orders.
- Launch gradually. Monitor payment failures, email delivery, server resources, stock deductions, download access and member permissions during the first orders. Keep the staging site available for reproducing issues.
Common failure modes and practical fixes
“The plugin is free, but the store keeps generating bills”
Separate core software from extensions and services. Make a line-item budget for gateways, tax, shipping, backups, security, email, storage, support and hosting. Remove unused extensions and consolidate overlapping functions, but never remove a component without testing its data and checkout dependencies.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Orders succeed but customers do not receive email
Use authenticated transactional email rather than relying on a host’s default mail function. Send test receipts, refund notices, download links and membership messages from staging, then monitor delivery and bounces after launch.
Best Value
Taxes or shipping are wrong at checkout
Verify the store address, customer location detection, tax-inclusive versus tax-exclusive display, rounding rules, product tax classes, shipping zones and fallback rates. Test an address in each service region and retain the result as a release check.
A download link is exposed or a member sees restricted content
Review file locations, URL permissions, expiration and download limits. For memberships, test every level as a new user, an expired user and a cancelled user. Confirm that cached pages do not serve protected content to logged-out visitors.
An update breaks checkout
Restore the last known-good backup if necessary, reproduce the issue on staging and identify the changed plugin, theme or PHP version. Keep a written compatibility matrix and update one component at a time so the cause is observable.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe store is slow as the catalog grows
Measure database queries, image weight, third-party scripts, search behavior, cron jobs and checkout requests rather than guessing. Use appropriate caching that excludes cart and account pages, optimize images, remove unused extensions and increase hosting resources only after identifying the bottleneck.
Migration, ownership and exit planning
Migration is easiest when planned before launch. Export a sample of products, customers, orders, coupons, files and membership records and verify that identifiers, dates, tax details and access states survive a test import. Keep original file names and license or entitlement history where customers need continuity.
WooCommerce, Easy Digital Downloads and MemberPress store much of their information in WordPress, but extensions may create their own tables or use external services. Shopify for WordPress splits ownership between two systems, so document which platform is authoritative for products, customers, orders, content and analytics. Do not assume that a generic WordPress backup contains Shopify data or that a CSV export preserves every extension-specific field.
Accessibility, localization and security checks
- Choose a theme and checkout that support keyboard navigation, visible focus, labels, error messages and adequate color contrast; test with a screen reader on mobile and desktop.
- Translate product, checkout, receipt and account messages for every selling region. Check date, number, currency, address and tax formats, not just front-end headings.
- Use least-privilege administrator accounts, multi-factor authentication, HTTPS, timely updates and tested off-site backups.
- Limit customer data collection, publish retention and refund policies, and verify consent and privacy requirements for the regions you serve.
- Review extension permissions and external data transfers. A payment, tax, email or analytics service can create obligations outside WordPress.
Final recommendation
Choose WooCommerce when you need the broadest WordPress-native model for physical or mixed products and are prepared to operate an extension-based stack. Choose Easy Digital Downloads when protected files and licenses are the business. Choose MemberPress when recurring access and entitlement rules matter more than shipping. Choose Shopify for WordPress when reducing commerce-backend maintenance is worth a recurring plan and a split data model. Whichever route you take, select the catalog model first, budget the complete operating stack and prove checkout, fulfillment, access and recovery on staging before launch.
