Neither Fandom nor independent fan wikis are always better. For a quick lookup, use the specific wiki with the most current, complete, well-sourced page. If you plan to edit—or help a community choose where to host its wiki—compare the community’s activity, rules, licensing, reading experience, and ability to maintain the site. “Independent” means separate from a platform; it does not guarantee accuracy or quality.
What is the difference?
Fandom is a centralized, free, ad-supported wiki host focused mainly on pop culture, including television, film, and games. It uses MediaWiki; MediaWiki.org notes that Fandom’s 2020 Unified Community Platform enabled wikis to use standard MediaWiki again after years on a heavily modified version. The underlying software does not establish whether an individual wiki is accurate, complete, or well moderated.

An independent fan wiki is hosted outside Fandom. That can mean a different arrangement for governance and platform control, but independent wikis are not a single uniform alternative: their software, hosting, policies, funding, and maintenance vary.

Judge the page, not the host’s name. A well-maintained Fandom wiki can be more useful than a neglected independent one, and the reverse can also be true. For a consequential claim, check the page’s sources and compare it with official material or reliable reporting.

Check whether the page is current and supported
- Look for recent revision history and signs that the relevant topic has an active editor base.
- Prefer pages that cite sources and distinguish confirmed information from speculation.
- Search the topic with “wiki,” then check whether the result is the community’s current preferred site. Migration notices or links to a successor can help: an older, better-indexed wiki may still appear after a move.
Compare the actual reading experience
Try the page on both desktop and mobile. Consider its navigation, accessibility, embeds, advertisements, and loading behavior; these can differ by site and page. In March 2026, GamesRadar reported that GTA Wiki editors cited advertising, videos added without consent, and enforcement of content rules among their concerns about Fandom. Those are attributed complaints from one migration, not a measured comparison of all Fandom pages or independent wikis.
Which is better for editing?
The best fit depends on how the community wants contributions and decisions to work. Fandom describes its communities as open and community edited. Its support page says private wikis are not offered: pages remain publicly viewable, although administrators may require contributors to log in to edit. If a group needs a restricted workspace, verify that its prospective independent host actually offers the access controls it needs; independence alone does not promise them.

Read the rules before contributing
Check account requirements, moderation and dispute procedures, page protection, acceptable-content rules, and who can change site features. Also review whether the community is active enough to discuss edits and maintain pages. A platform’s general policy does not tell you how a particular wiki applies it day to day.
Check rights before reusing material
Fandom says wiki text is generally licensed under CC BY-SA unless otherwise permitted. Media can have different terms: check the description and license for each individual file rather than assuming an image shares the article text’s license. Before copying material to another site, confirm the applicable terms and preserve required attribution. Fandom’s forking policy discusses licenses and the platform’s position that communities can continue elsewhere; permission to move a community does not remove the need to follow content licenses.

What an independent move involves
Leaving a host can give a community a different governance and hosting arrangement, but it also creates continuing work: people must move or rebuild pages, direct readers to the new destination, arrange hosting, and keep content current. The community should determine what it can legally transfer and who will maintain both the old and new destinations.
GamesRadar reported in March 2026 that the GTA Wiki had migrated away from Fandom, and also noted earlier fan-wiki departures. The GTA Wiki editors said more than 60% of their own viewers were logged-out mobile visitors; that is their reported audience figure, not a platform-wide statistic. The example shows that migration is possible and requires organization, not that it is effortless or right for every wiki.
