First check for safety warnings: smoke, sparks, unusual heat or odor, cracking or hissing sounds, a damaged battery or power cable, or abnormal operation. If you see any of these—or the laptop was dropped and you are unsure it is safe—stop using it, unplug it, and contact the manufacturer for inspection guidance. If there are no warning signs, inspect the exterior gently, check normal functions without forcing anything, and back up important files while the laptop remains safe to use.
1. Decide whether it is safe to keep using
Before turning the laptop on or moving the lid, look and listen for warning signs such as smoke, sparks, overheating, a strong unusual odor, cracking, hissing or popping sounds, damaged power cables or adapters, a damaged battery, or operation that is no longer normal. Lenovo’s safety guidance for the ThinkPad T490 says to stop using and unplug a product when it has been dropped or damaged, or when another safety concern is present. It advises contacting support or the manufacturer for inspection instructions: Lenovo: Conditions that require immediate action. Consult your own model’s documentation for its specific instructions.

- If a warning sign is present: Stop using the laptop and disconnect it from power if you can do so safely. Do not turn it on just to test it or retrieve files. Contact the manufacturer or an authorized service provider.
- If there are no warning signs: Continue with a visual inspection. Do not open the laptop or attempt a teardown; service procedures and battery construction vary by model.
2. Inspect the screen, case, and hinges
Screen and case
With the laptop closed, look for cracks, dents, separation, a displaced bezel, or an unevenly aligned lid. If the exterior looks intact and the lid moves smoothly, open it gently and check for new flickering, lines, artifacts, or other changes during ordinary use. ASUS lists screen-back damage, panel-connector deformation, and liquid intrusion among its examples of physical damage: ASUS customer-induced damage criteria.
A screen that turns on does not establish that the display assembly or chassis is undamaged. A visual check can reveal obvious problems, but it cannot rule out damage underneath the screen or inside the case.

Hinges
Look around both hinges for cracks, separation, missing pieces, or new looseness. ASUS includes hinge damage in its physical-damage criteria. If a hinge is visibly damaged or binds, stop moving the lid and ask the manufacturer or an authorized repair provider for model-specific advice. Repeatedly opening and closing it is not a useful test and may worsen the damage.
3. Check ports, charger, and cables
Inspect the charging connection and adapter cable first, then the ports your model has: USB, video, network, and audio connections, for example. Look for a bent or broken connector, a displaced plastic tongue, a loose port, cracks, or damage to the surrounding case. ASUS’s criteria cover I/O damage such as bent or broken pins and broken or detached port pieces; its port examples include USB, Ethernet, charging, HDMI, DisplayPort, and audio jacks. See the ASUS physical-damage criteria.

4. Look for possible battery swelling
Check whether the bottom panel or keyboard area bulges or separates, whether the touchpad or keyboard appears displaced, or whether the screen no longer closes normally or looks misaligned. Dell and HP describe these as possible signs that a battery may be swollen; a distorted case is not a diagnosis, but it warrants caution. Dell’s guidance is for Australia, and battery designs and service steps vary by model and region.

If you notice possible swelling, stop using the laptop and disconnect AC power if you can do so safely. Do not puncture, bend, or press on the battery, and do not try to free one that is stuck inside the device. Contact the manufacturer or an authorized service channel for safe next steps. See Dell’s swollen-battery guidance and HP’s battery-swelling guidance.
5. Check normal functions only if the laptop appears safe
If there are no safety warnings and the computer starts normally, observe whether the built-in display remains stable, the keyboard and touchpad respond, charging behaves normally, and ports work without forcing cables. Stop if you notice new abnormal behavior; a successful startup alone does not prove the hardware is sound.

If the built-in display has a problem, an external monitor can help check whether the laptop sends an image to another screen. Microsoft recommends checking that the monitor cable is secure, trying another cable, or trying another available video output when troubleshooting a monitor connection. Those steps help isolate a connection issue; they are not a post-drop diagnostic or proof that internal components are undamaged. See Microsoft’s external-monitor troubleshooting guidance.

6. Protect your files without risking the laptop
If the laptop remains safe to operate, copy important files to an external drive or a secure cloud-storage location, then check that the copies are present and usable. Microsoft’s Windows guidance covers copying files to external storage and verifying the copies: Back up and restore with Windows.
Safety takes priority over backup. If the laptop shows a stop-use warning, do not keep powering or stressing it to retrieve data. Ask the manufacturer or a qualified data-recovery provider about options.
7. Choose the next step
| What you find | What to do |
|---|---|
| Smoke, sparks, unusual heat or odor, suspicious sounds, damaged battery or power equipment, or abnormal operation | Stop using it, unplug if safe, and contact the manufacturer or authorized support. |
| Visible swelling, a bulging case, or displaced touchpad, keyboard, or screen | Stop using it, disconnect AC power if safe, and seek manufacturer or authorized service guidance. |
| Cracked screen or case, damaged hinge, or bent or loose port | Avoid stressing the affected area or forcing a connector; seek model-specific inspection or repair advice. |
| No warning signs, but a new display or function problem persists | Back up files if safe to do so, then contact the manufacturer or authorized repair provider. |
| No warning signs or visible damage, and it behaves normally | Back up important files and watch for new symptoms. A normal appearance or startup cannot rule out hidden damage. |
Manufacturer guidance identifies damage types and warning signs but does not establish a universal failure probability for a laptop dropped from a particular height. Do not assume a fall was harmless based on height alone; the outcome depends on the specific device and damage.
