Fallout 76 FAQ: Fallout 1st, Cross-Play, and Playing With Friends

Only a Private Adventure host needs Fallout 1st. Bethesda confirms Steam and Microsoft PC cross-play, while console online play requires the applicable platform membership.

You do not need Fallout 1st just to join a friend’s Private Adventure: only the player who starts it needs the membership. Bethesda confirms that Steam and Microsoft PC players can play together in all modes, but its cited support pages do not establish Xbox-to-PlayStation or console-to-PC cross-play. Console players also need an internet connection and the applicable Xbox Game Pass or PlayStation Plus membership for online play.

Do friends need Fallout 1st to join a Private Adventure?

No. The owner needs Fallout 1st to start a Private Adventure, but invited friends do not need their own membership. Bethesda says an owner can host up to seven friends, for eight players total. Friends can join by invitation or through access to the owner’s friends list.

The owner can set access to Team Only or All Friends. If the owner leaves, the world can stay active while a guest with Fallout 1st remains logged in. If no Fallout 1st member is online, players receive a warning and the world shuts down after its timer.

Fallout 1st includes more than private hosting: Bethesda lists Custom Worlds, unlimited crafting-component storage in the Scrapbox, an Ammo Box (excluding Fusion Cores and Plasma Cores), a Survival Tent, 1,650 Atoms per month, a Fallout 1st Season Pass, cosmetics, and other benefits. Some features, including Private Adventures and the Survival Tent, are available only for the duration of the membership. Bethesda’s benefits page does not establish a current price, and prices may vary by platform or region. See Bethesda’s Fallout 1st benefits.

Fallout 76: Wastelanders - Xbox One
  • New Main Quest: Uncover the secrets of West Virginia by playing through an all-new main quest, starting from the moment you leave Vault 76.
  • Human NPCs: Befriend or betray new neighbors who have come to rebuild, and experience Appalachia through the eyes of its residents.
  • New Creatures and Gear: Take down newly mutated creatures finding their way to the region and earn the highest tier of weapons and armor.
  • Choices and Reputation: Alter the fates of those you meet with dialogue trees. Decisions affect your standing with each faction through an all-new reputation system.

What happens when Fallout 1st expires?

Bethesda says you can still access Atoms you received and resources already stored in your Scrapbox after membership ends, but you cannot deposit additional crafting components. Private World access, Survival Tent access, and other benefits tied to an active membership end. Cosmetics and outfits claimed from the Atomic Shop while subscribed remain yours. Read Bethesda’s membership-expiration details.

Can Xbox and PlayStation players play Fallout 76 together?

Bethesda’s cited support material does not provide a complete cross-play chart covering Xbox, PlayStation, and PC. It confirms PC interoperability across Steam and Microsoft PC versions, but that confirmation is not evidence that Xbox and PlayStation players can join each other. The same material does not definitively resolve every cross-generation pairing, such as Xbox One with Xbox Series X|S or PS4 with PS5.

Bethesda lists Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and qualifying PCs as supported platforms. Supported platforms alone do not establish that players on different platform families can share a session. Bethesda’s platform information and PC cross-play guidance are the relevant official references.

Can Steam players play with Microsoft PC players?

Yes. Bethesda explicitly says PC players can play together across Steam and Microsoft PC versions in all game modes. This confirms cross-store PC play; it does not establish cross-play between PC and console versions.

How do I invite or join a friend?

  1. Open the Social Menu. Bethesda also says friends can be added through the Paper Map; on consoles, you can add friends through the console interface.
  2. Select your friend’s name and choose “Invite To Team” to form a group.
  3. To join an active game, select an online friend and choose “Join Session.” This option depends on the friend being online and in a session.

Bethesda says players can join friends in other countries when those friends are online. See Bethesda’s guide to adding and joining friends.

Do I need Game Pass or PlayStation Plus to play Fallout 76?

For console online play, Bethesda says you need an internet connection and Xbox Game Pass or PlayStation Plus. That platform-level online membership is separate from Fallout 1st: Game Pass or PlayStation Plus is the stated console online requirement, while Fallout 1st adds game-specific benefits such as starting a Private Adventure. The cited support page does not specify current plan prices or clarify every tier name. It does not say PC players need an Xbox or PlayStation subscription. Check Bethesda’s console online requirements.
