The larger screen alone is no guarantee of a better game experience: Niantic does not certify foldable models, and players have reported awkward scaling on some older Galaxy Z Fold devices.
If Pokémon GO is your main reason for paying extra, compare a conventional phone and try the exact foldable with the game open and closed before deciding.

Will Pokémon GO run on a foldable phone?
Possibly, but there is no blanket compatibility guarantee for foldables. The Pokémon GO Help Center lists Android 9 or newer, at least 2 GB of RAM, GPS and Location Services, and a strong internet connection. It gives 720 × 1280 as a preferred resolution. These are listed compatibility criteria, not a performance target or a guarantee for every handset.
Niantic cautions: “We cannot guarantee device support: With many device models and configurations available in different regions, we cannot guarantee that every device that meets the criteria will be able to play the game.” That matters for foldables, whose screen layouts and regional configurations vary.

The game’s Google Play listing includes an older compatibility paragraph marked current as of October 20, 2020. Do not use that dated paragraph as the current requirements; refer to Niantic’s support page instead. If you are considering an older used Android phone, also check that it is 64-bit: support for affected 32-bit Android devices ended in phases in 2025, beginning with Samsung Galaxy Store installs in March and Google Play installs in July. See the Pokémon GO announcement.
How the game may look on the inner screen
An open foldable gives you a much larger display, but that does not mean Pokémon GO will fill it neatly or make better use of the extra space. Android’s device compatibility-mode guidance explains that apps may be letterboxed on large screens to preserve their proportions when the app does not directly support that window size or orientation. This is general Android context, not confirmation of how the game behaves on a particular foldable.
Some owners of older Galaxy Z Fold generations have described the game working on the cover screen but scaling poorly on the inner screen. Those reports are anecdotal and do not establish how current foldables behave. For examples, see the discussions about Pokémon GO on the Z Fold 4/5 and the Z Fold 4.
What to check on both displays
Try the exact handset and current game version if you can, ideally during the return period. Check the two screen modes separately; a layout that feels fine on one may not suit you on the other.

- Cover display: Open the map, move around it and catch a Pokémon. Decide whether the screen feels comfortable for the controls and map visibility you use most.
- Inner display: Look for letterboxing, stretched or undersized interface elements, awkwardly placed controls, or a layout that makes the map harder to use. Check your usual grip rather than judging the screen size alone.
- Switching screens: See how opening and closing the phone affects the way you play. Consider whether you are willing to use the cover screen for most game sessions even though the phone unfolds.
- Your own use: Judge the layout for your play habits and hands. These are practical checks, not issues confirmed across all foldables.
GPS, connection, battery and heat
Pokémon GO is designed around playing in real places. Niantic lists GPS and Location Services and a strong internet connection as requirements; its support page also warns that some Wi-Fi-only tablets lack built-in GPS and that congested event networks can make it difficult to maintain a strong enough GPS signal. A foldable still needs dependable location and mobile connectivity for the places and conditions where you play.
There is no controlled, current comparison here of Pokémon GO battery drain or heat on foldables versus conventional phones. Before buying, look for independent testing of the exact model under sustained GPS and gaming workloads; general screen size is not enough to predict its endurance or temperature. A portable battery pack can be a practical option for a long outdoor session, but needing one is not established as a foldable-specific drawback.
Decide whether the foldable earns its cost beyond the game
Consider the whole phone purchase rather than treating the inner display as a Pokémon GO upgrade. If you will regularly use that screen for reading, video, multitasking or other tasks, the game can be one part of the value. If Pokémon GO is the main reason you are paying more, compare conventional phones and test both foldable screens before committing. There is no model-specific evidence here to conclude that foldables are better for the game.
