First, identify which kind of pet you have
Fallout 76 uses “C.A.M.P. Pet” for a placed cat or dog, while a tamed animal is an eligible creature sent to guard your C.A.M.P. The announced World Pets update is a third, future-facing system. Their behavior and troubleshooting are not interchangeable.

How to keep a tamed guard animal safe on the trip to camp
Meet the taming requirements
Bethesda Support says Animal Friend rank 3 enables a chance to tame eligible animals and send one to guard a C.A.M.P., provided you have sufficient Charisma. The support page specifies 3 Charisma points. A C.A.M.P. can have only one tamed guard animal at a time.
Stay in the game until it arrives
- Tame an eligible animal using Animal Friend rank 3 and the required Charisma.
- Keep the game session connected while the animal walks to your C.A.M.P.
- Wait until it has reached the C.A.M.P. before disconnecting. Bethesda Support explicitly warns that disconnecting before arrival makes the animal disappear.
Bethesda does not give an average journey time or a survival chance. Community reports describe danger on the route and vulnerable animals, but these are player observations rather than an official risk model. Do not assume a particular species is guaranteed to survive.

What to check if a tamed animal seems missing
Look around the C.A.M.P. module and nearby structures
A 2026 community taming guide reports that tamed animals patrol near the module and may be killed if the module or other objects load over them. Keeping the module area clear is a cautious, low-cost placement measure, but this is an anecdotal community tip—not a Bethesda-confirmed cause or guaranteed fix.
Account for death as well as disappearance
Bethesda says tamed animals cannot respawn. If yours died on the route or after reaching camp, it will not return through respawning. Community reports mention encounters with danger, but neither Bethesda nor the community material establishes a reliable survival rate or a method that makes a tame invulnerable.

Live C.A.M.P. Pet placement and limits
Bethesda introduced C.A.M.P. Pets in the Gleaming Depths update. To place one, use the DWELLERS workshop tab and the corresponding cat bed or doghouse. The release notes say you can have one pet and one ally in a C.A.M.P., but only one pet at a time; C.A.M.P. Pets are unavailable in Shelters. The notes also mention an occasional item through the Pet Treasure system.

These details apply to the placed cat or dog feature, not to a tamed guard animal’s trip to camp. The release notes describe C.A.M.P. Pets as staying at the C.A.M.P.; they do not say that they follow you through the world.

What World Pets may change—and what is not live yet
Bethesda’s September 30, 2026 roadmap says World Pets are planned for December 2026. The announced direction is for C.A.M.P. Pets to accompany players on adventures and level up, with stay, follow, protect, and attack commands.
Bethesda’s September 28 PTS notes describe test changes such as pet health bars, a wounded-pet HUD emote, and movement and XP fixes. The same notes list known test issues: long-distance ping-to-move failures and inconsistent pet XP. These are PTS findings, not proof of current live-game bugs; they also should not be applied to the stationary C.A.M.P. Pet feature. Check Bethesda’s current live patch notes to confirm what shipped and whether the planned December timing or mechanics changed.
