That follows the release-era sequence for these two games, but it is not a story prerequisite: you can start with either. Choose Fallout 4 first instead if settlement building, its action-RPG presentation, or its currently announced Anniversary Edition fits what you want to play.
Does the order matter to the story?
No. Bethesda’s official Fallout timeline places New Vegas after Fallout 3 and identifies Fallout 4 as a 2015 release. That makes New Vegas the natural first choice if you want to follow the series’ broad chronology, but the games do not need to be played in that order to understand either one.

So treat chronology as a tie-breaker, not a rule. Your preference for the games’ features and the edition available on your platform is a better reason to choose one first.
Choose based on what you want from your first game
Pick New Vegas first if chronology is your deciding factor
If you want to move through the series in order, start with New Vegas before Fallout 4. The official timeline supports that broad sequence; it does not establish that one game’s plot depends on the other.

Pick Fallout 4 first if you want to build settlements
Settlement construction is a distinctive reason to begin with Fallout 4. Bethesda’s timeline describes crafting and constructing personal settlements as a feature introduced in that game. If building and customizing a home base sounds more appealing than following chronology, start here.
Pick Fallout 4 first if its action-RPG presentation appeals to you
PlayStation describes Fallout 4 as an open-world action RPG set in Boston and the wider Commonwealth, with first- or third-person combat and V.A.T.S. Those are concrete points to weigh if you are deciding what kind of play experience you want. They do not establish that it is objectively better or easier for a new player.

What does Fallout 4: Anniversary Edition include?
Bethesda says Fallout 4: Anniversary Edition includes the base game, six official add-ons, and more than 150 Creation Club items. That package may make Fallout 4 the convenient starting point if you want its bundled content, rather than choosing by chronology alone.
Bethesda announced the Anniversary Edition for Nintendo Switch 2 with a February 24 launch date, or February 25 in Australia. Because the announcement is not a guarantee of current stock or availability in every region, confirm the listing for your country and platform before buying.

Check platform and edition before you buy
Compare the actual listings available where you live. Bethesda’s catalog lists New Vegas, but the available evidence does not establish current physical stock, platform coverage, or which edition and add-ons are included in each regional listing. Do not assume that its package matches the contents Bethesda specifies for Fallout 4: Anniversary Edition.
- Check that the game is offered for your platform and region.
- Confirm whether the listing is for the base game or a bundle, and read exactly what the bundle includes.
- Verify current price, format, and stock on the store you plan to use; these can vary by region and change over time.
A quick decision
- Want a simple chronology-based order? Start with New Vegas, then play Fallout 4.
- Most interested in constructing settlements? Start with Fallout 4.
- Prefer the action-RPG presentation described by PlayStation? Start with Fallout 4.
- Want the announced Anniversary Edition bundle? Check its regional and platform availability, then start with Fallout 4 if the package suits you.
The best first game is the one whose features and available edition fit your preferences. You can play the other afterward without treating the choice as a commitment to a required story order.
