Usually, no—not if your Switch copies still suit you. The Switch 2 editions promise improved resolution and frame rate, but Square Enix offers no upgrade pack and says saves cannot transfer between versions. Rebuy only if those improvements, or owning the Switch 2 editions, are worth paying for again and starting over.
What changes in the Switch 2 editions?
Square Enix lists improved resolution and frame rate for both Switch 2 editions compared with their Nintendo Switch versions. It has not published resolution figures or frame-rate targets in the cited product information, and there are no independent side-by-side measurements here. The improvement is therefore real as a publisher-stated feature, but its size cannot be quantified from those details. Can you upgrade your Switch copy or transfer its save?
No. Square Enix says it has no plans to sell an upgrade pack from the Switch version to the Switch 2 version, and that save data is incompatible between them. Treat the Switch 2 edition as a separate purchase and expect to begin a new save rather than carry over your progress. Do you need to buy both games?
No. They are separate adventures, not consecutive chapters of one story that require both purchases. The first is set in Orsterra; OCTOPATH TRAVELER II is set in Solistia and follows a different group of eight protagonists. Does OCTOPATH TRAVELER II’s Extra Battle mode justify rebuying?
Not on its own. Square Enix announced in June 2024 that Extra Battle was added to the original Switch version as well as the PS5, PS4, and PC versions. It is not a Switch 2-exclusive addition. Square Enix’s June 2024 update announcement.

- Keep the Switch versions if you are satisfied with them, want to preserve your progress, or would rather not pay for the same game again.
- Consider one Switch 2 edition if you care about the stated resolution and frame-rate improvements enough to pay again and restart that game.
- Consider the bundle only if you want both titles in physical form and its current local price makes sense compared with buying one edition.
